So we've heard a lot about super hero films striking the pop cultural thunder, and riding that lightning, but what about the villains? Surely as respected film-makers go they can create entire films focusing on our favorite faction of foes? Every renegade rogue has the potential to carry an entire film out, with that tight-wearin moralist serving as the ever-annoying Dream-Destroyer.

So who will it be from Marvel or DC? If you had to pitch an idea for a supervillain film, who would you choose and why?

Venom was floating around for a while, but what with the fiasco that Spider-Man 3 was and the reboot, I don't think that's happening anytime soon. And Lobo was another movie I heard a lot about, but I think that's dead in the water too (like Magneto, which is one villain movie I could see holding its own)

A proper Deathstroke film would kick copious boo-tay, but a lot of the potential shine is going to come off of that if a decent Deadpool movie gets made.

Deadshot would be interesting too, playing up the hired gun/assassin angle. Suicide Squad too. Chameleon came to mind, but I get the feeling I'm reaching there.

I could see any of these getting effed because of the desire to play up the character as someone for the audience to (eventually) root for or empathize with on some level.

You'd need a supervillain that you could root for. Take my suggestion of Lex Luthor, for example. Told in the right way, his ruthless ambition and point of view on Superman being on Earth can be both relatable and understandable. Doom is another such villain.

Blue collar guys like Taskmaster could work also.

I think a supervillain movie CAN and should work! We don't always need to empathize with the protagonist (though maybe I'm thinking too artsy here). MAGNETO would have been a brilliant stand-alone, but I don't mind that they're using that as the basis for First Class - the fall of Xavier and Lehnsherr, not a bad story at all.

Deathstroke,
Deadshot,
Deadpool

- all movies with that assassin angle that any action fan would enjoy, with or without a moral message (and perhaps all the more better because of it)!

A Lex Luthor - centered graphic novel that gave us his perspective on the Man of Steel was something I really wanted to read, and when Brian Azzarello came up with it I honestly believed that's what it would've been - unfortunately it showed more of Luthor's hypocrisy than anything else and I think that weakened the gravity of the story. Superman was still the Man of Steel instead of the tyrant that Luthor sees him to be. Though I hardly believe this could be a film on it's own.

What about a full-on APOCALYPSE film based on Darkseid? He could be played either as the totalitarian dictator, or even more subtly as a religious figurehead ala the Pope in the Vatican (only evil and much more mean) who controls his entire world. With High Father as the 'antagonist' even though he's the morally sound one? I think that the Kirby family should invest in that.

Frank Miller's working on a script for XERXES, I think that's similar to what we're discussing here.

A DOC. DOOM movie would sell aces. I would definitely vote for villains who have a greater presence in their respective universes - like Kingpin for example?

Supervillain films can exist because Hollywood does make films about historical bad-guys, so why not super villains?

And what about comedies?

Doc Ock
The Joker
The Emperor from Star Wars.
Darth Vader, Even though we know how he came to be already, could be done better perhaps.
General Stryker.

If they just lost the costume (with possible allusions to it), I think comparisons to Deadpool could be cut back drastically. I guess take a Chris Nolan approach to the character, like they did in the Gotham Knight movie, and make him as believable as possible, so at least him and Deadpool would be on the opposite ends of the spectrum, as far as tone goes.

Just make Superman scary. It can be done. But he doesn't need to be the villain, just the antagonist.

Yes, that's the way to think about this - the 'hero' doesn't need to be a villain, just an antagonist - someone who opposes our protagonist bad guy and foils his plots. Think Ocean's Eleven with Robert Downey Jr. as a good guy (yeah I know that's hard, but come on!)

Well if they gonna go that route then I guess it can be done. Tht would be a fresh new interestng take in a comic book film.

N'Jadaka aka Erik Killmonger

apocalypse- do the rise of apocalypse story.
mr. sinister- nataniel essex from scientist to mad scientist with the help of apocalypse of course. shows how the quest for knowledge can lead down a dark path(oooaaaah),lol,a really good tale.
galactus is neither evil nor good, but still would like to see him.
ego the living planet
loki- i like his cunning and deceit. the master manipulator.
thanos- his devotion and obsession to death is intriguing.

This is exactly what I have been thinking about recently. A comic book villain movie.

Dr. Doom is the most obvious. A movie dedicated to Doom in all his melodramatic freakiness would be surefire awesomeness.

*Correction on my previous post - I meant to call it THE NEW GODS ala Kirby's original run, only focus more on Darkseid.

Some of these suggestions are awesome! I'd love the Doc Doom film! The Apocalypse (Marvel) would be just as awesome - especially if it's done in a trilogy and with the original X-Men attached, bonus points if this is the central plot for X4 (but who am I kidding, that's a boat that's still sinking).

I don't know much about Loki since he is being done in Thor as it is, but that's just me. More from DC's side of things, I wouldn't mind seeing a film about Amazo, or Eclipso - both are characters that have taken on the JLA full-on and their origins are so removed from any particular 'hero' that they can be valid stand-alone films. I also wouldn't mind a rise-and-fall-sort of tale for either Bane or Doomsday - though the latter is really nothing without his battle with The Man of Steel. From the Wonder books we have Circe - a character from the Odyssey that already has films based on her - a more comic friendly look at Circe, complete with the Bana Mighdall Amazons wouldn't be a terrible idea (but of course, WW first). There's also that Chronos The Time Lord guy for all the love of continuity changes (hell, it could double as a satire for all the modern-day 'reboots' present in Hollywood). Finally, while not exactly a 'villain' per se, I think Etrigan could really add something to DC's line up.

We've seen films that are centred around notable 'bad guys' - SCARFACE is considered a cinematic masterpiece and it played that Greek-Tragedy play structure so well that even mainstream moviegoers ate it up. The possibilities are all there.

Magneto would of worked well but that is dead lol

since he is a villain that you understand the method to his madness

Just make a film like Amadeus with Luthor as Salieri and Superman as Mozart.
