Supergirl Supergirl General Discussion Thread - Part 1

Melissa Benoist is just wrong on so many levels. Why are casting directors so afraid to cast female superheroes who look like the character? Hopefully the pilot won't get picked up and the role will be recast with someone like Aimee Teegarden.

Not that I'm accusing you of this, but a lot of people seem to pick haircolor as something that's remotely relevant. Kara can be blonde without any difficulty at all - the actress only has to dye her hair (although they kinda didn't bother with Grant Gustin).

Leaving that aside, do you even know Aimee Teegarden applied for the role? If you don't know that, it's hard to really criticize their casting, which seems fine for me, although, not being overly familiar with either, is hard to say.

I think that a lot of sites used a bad photo of her when announcing her casting leading to people calling her plain or average looking.

A quick search on google image and you can see that she is actually very naturally pretty.

yeah, she looks better in some pictures than in others.

still, she doesn't immediately strike me as "Supergirl." I'd say that Claire Holt or Elizabeth Lail give me a more Supergirl vibe right off that bat.

that's why I want to see what Melissa will actually look like blonde and in costume as Kara.

Or, more likely, the internet is just made up of a bunch of superficial dweebs who like rating the attractiveness of women they can never so much as touch, and treating them dismissively because they don't match the physical specifications of comic book females that often aren't remotely anatomically realistic. :o

Sure let's just slap blond hair dye on any girl. That's the attitude behind this casting.

Nobody knows who auditioned but there are several other actresses who would be believable in the role.

Is this going to be another one of those threads where someone spends all their time promoting an actor THAT DID NOT GET THE ROLE?

Oh I hope not....ugh. I do like Aimee Tergarden though. She's a cutie. But I like Melissa Benoist too so I'm happy with the her casting

When Hollywood miscasts iconic characters I don't just sit and pretend it's not happening. First there was Ann Hathaway, then Gal Gadot and now this miscasting adds insult to injury. DC just can not get female characters right.

Anne was great as CW. No one can even judge Gal yet.

But Melissa definitely has that innocence that Supergirl had pre-crisis, and she can play the girl next door easily.

When a studio officially casts an actor in a role...and a poster goes on and on and on and on about how they are wrong and how this other actor is perfect for the role....they start out as annoying and generally move right on up to trolling.

Anne Hathaway was a "miscast?" We must have been watching different movies guitarking.

Miscast according to you....time to get over it.

Dye blonde hair to the best actress, presumably. But I don't see what's wrong with that. Hair color is easily changeable. In fact, it's one of the easiest things to change to make sure the character looks appropriate for the part. What possible reason does it matter if she's a natural blonde. It's called television. They're not looking for an actual Kryptonian to play the role - it's all make-believe.

Win.

usually Id agree but blonde is the hardest color to get right as most brunettes that dye it simply dont look good. It tends off looking unnatural and can be distracting if it sticks out as such. Like I never got used to Jessica Alba as Sue Storm and the hair was a big issue bc of that, Ill wait and see how Melissa looks. Hopefully she fares better

SMG is a natural brunette too but she looks great as Buffy with blond hair

Just to add to that, Helen Slater, whom I think is the most perfect representation of Supergirl we've had on film (albeit in a horrible movie) is also a natural brunette who dyed her hair blonde for the role. She didn't look unnatural at all as a blonde, and in fact now she keeps that colour so that everyone thinks it's her real colour.

Lots of brunettes look good with their hair dyed blonde. Jessica Alba just wasn't one of them.

She actually looks fine with a dirty shade of blonde. The problem with the FF movies is that they tried to white wash her to make her look related to Chris Evans, when she has olive skin and brown eyes and clearly looks like a Latina. She didn't look natural. But she does look more natural as a blonde in other movies she's in where she's not trying to be something else.

And yes, there are lots of brunettes who look great with blonde hair. Marilyn Monroe is another classic example of a natural brunette who became more iconic with her blonde locks.

I think it depends on several factors though, such as how pale their skin is (blonde can make them look even paler) and the shade of colouring. I'm sure they'll select the most natural look for Melissa Benoist. I think Supergirl needs a warm honey blonde look personally rather than a dirty blonde shade.

Anne Hathaway miscast? My god I can't take you seriously after saying that.

Plus Glad Gadot miscast? May I please borrow your time travelling device as I want to watch Batman v Superman aswell. What's that? You don't havea time travel device nor have you seen Batman v Superman? Oh you're making a judgement based off one still of Gadot as Wonder Woman. Ah right why didn't you say so the first time :whatever:

But you'd have still hit that right? :cwink:
