Supergirl Supergirl General Discussion Thread - Part 10

These two observations are not unrelated, IMO. The kind of adults who rant, rave, start petitions, etc, do so because they are worried that if kids regularly see this stuff? They'll grow up to be adults who view it as normal, or at least unextraordinary and unobjectionable. Thus the effort to keep it off TV.

Which is the whole point of putting it on TV. So kids do see it as normal and not something to be ashamed of and bullied if the kid is Gay. Luckily we now have the internet so kids will still be able to find
shows like Supergirl even if the parents forbid them from watching it on TV, instead of like in the past where once a show aired it was gone and couldn't be seen again.

The peeps that run the CWSupergirl twitter page had some discussions with people who were worried about their children seeing the Alex/Maggie relationship and their children having questions.

They said..."good" it's good that they have questions.....but remember, it is how you answer those questions that will impact their understanding, not what we have shown you on TV. So as an adult what are "your" thoughts on this subject, because that is what is going to impact your child and either give them a view of acceptance or a view of intolerance....a view of 2 people in love or a view of fear.

That is pretty much what it boils down to....

My now 11yo (he just turned this May) loves this show and all the other CW shows including Arrow (we watch it as a family). You know, the show where Curtis is married to another man.

It's just another relationship in another show for us and him. Why?

Because we explained the concept of what being gay is about years ago to him, and that it is a natural part of existence despite what people claim. He knows. It's there. It's not a big deal.

And he will build upon your early teaching....unfortunately for some parents they do not see it as a natural part of existence, and that ignorance is passed on.

Cannot stand people who do sealioning.

I feel bad for my brother's kids. His wife doesn't want them to watch Sesame Street because of it.

Can't wait to see what she looks like all made up. I hope they stick as close as possible to the comics in appearance.

I hope Odette as Reign will look like the comics in terms of her look and physical appearance as she has to be physically menacing.

I've heard of her but never seen her in anything. Apparently she was in Brothers and Sisters which also starred Calista Flockhart, so there could be a reunion of sorts. Although I don't know if they were on the show at the same time.

I remember her from Cloverfield and a couple episodes I saw of that Astronaut Wives Club show. She was pretty good.

This is a false dichotomy. One can tolerate a behavior and still view it as immoral, as is taught by every major religion in the world.

If true, that makes Supergirl - for all its many flaws - more coherent. :word:

If I was a writer on the show, my preference would be to keep my options open as my hope would be the show would have a 5-7 year run, so to retain future flexibility I would have Maggie promoted as an "advanced specialist" due to her work with the DEO and send her off to another city to train that city's police force, similar to what Breaking Bad did with Hank when he was sent to the Mexican border.

This would buy the writers a year or two in case Lima chose to return. Killing the character would have an emotional impact, but would obviously limit future story lines with that character. While the show obviously has some sci-fi elements, some of you might be old enough might remember Dallas and its silly "dream" contortions plot to bring back a dead character.

Hmmm....that gives me an idea for a plotline...Maggie and Alex are killed, so Kara decides to go back in time to save them - but Barry crosses over and convinces her not to based upon his own negative experiences changing the timeline. Maybe Kara can only go back in time and save Alex, leaving her angry/bitter with Kara, and Barry angry at her for not listening to his advice - so she's REALLY alone and isolated.

Can go lots of ways with that plotline, and as the series moves forward the writers will no doubt add some kind of conflict between Alex and Kara to add some depth to the show and their relationship, especially since there has been very little of any between them to this point, and they are the lead and most prominent non-lead characters on the show.

I don't know their fight about Jeremiah was pretty conflicting. I actually wish we had seen some push back on that, but then we had the big ship save in the next episode so I guess they moved on... :)

Yes, they've had their arguments/disagreements, but I can't recall any that lasted more than an episode.

Yes, certainly not like the angst that Alex felt after killing Astra and the anger toward Jonn that Kara felt...that went through 2 full episodes before being resolved....and actually came back to light in the very next episode.

Be interesting to see where the story with Astra would have gone if Laura Benanti would have been available for the full season. Laura was cast in the Broadway musical "She Loves Me"
and that's why she had to leave the show and Astra was killed. I think Kara would have turned Astra to her side and Kara and Astra end up fighting side by side against Non.

That and she was pregnant..... :cwink:

If she could have stayed on I would have had Kara having to kill Non in order to save Jonn or Alex's life in an extreme circumstance....I think that would have thrown a curve ball at their aunt/niece/villain/hero relationship.

If they want to create a more extended rift between Kara and Alex, then placing Kara at odds with the DEO might be the way to do that.

I think that's a logical story development at some point.

I think they surpassed that possibility though when they had Alex tell Kara that .... yeah, had it been Maggie where Mon-el was she would do everything to get him off the ship as well, which would include going against the President's orders. IMO, she weakened her "lock-n-step" with the DEO status with that.

Yeah, that's true. I'm not saying that it is an immediate necessity, or that it should be done just for the sake of creating conflict.

But I could see it happening at some point, if a situation arises that causes a rift between Kara and the powers-that-be.
