Supergirl Supergirl Season 1 Episode 10 -"Childish Things" MAJOR SPOILERS

Quicksand can't be overcome by brute strength, even if you ARE "superhuman".

No, but it can be trivially overcome by *flight*. Quicksand is not magic infinite suction, its just like somewhat thicker water.

I suspect it *was* supposed to be some magic high tech suction goo phlebotinum, but they did a terrible job communicating such.

How the hell does ice stop 10 bombs? That was stupid. It would have been more fitting for Supergirl to just apprehend Toyman before he pressed the button

I absolutely love Lucy. We really need to see more of her

This episode did alot to humanize Winn and make him relatable as opposed to his somewhat annoying self. Not feeling him with Kara though

well I know water is used for defusing bombs making cit detonate early in a smaller manner if it doesn't disrupt the detonator and most the detonators are taken out this way via robot drons with water cannons on those robots and liquid nitrogen well the stuff that freezes as well which freezes as well disrupting the detonator most times.

How ever this wasn't the case in the show it was used as barrier to cushion the blow and flames by coat them with an ice wall . it's another suspension of disbelief moment.

Hmm. I'm liking Max Lord now. I'm more intrigued w/ him knowing who Supergirl is than when Kat briefly knew. And now J'onn is in his crosshairs too.

Ya, I was mildly bugged by how much disbelief I had to suspend in this episode. Given the title of the episode, some of the writing was indeed childish. It was unintentionally hilarious, some of it.

That being said, they finally did turn Winn into a person.

This is NOT REALITY TV. Comic books are supposed to sometimes suspend belief and reflect the culture of the day, which unfortunately has become sub-human in nature thanks to political correctness and diversity...all code words for power grab over the masses!

But I can see the poll numbers are all over the place...INCLUDING A 1!

That said, Winn became human...even if it was over his father who blamed everyone but himself for not having to take on his corrupt boss who stole his ideas and that's what caused him to snap.

ALSO...REALIZE SUPERGIRL IS A ROOKIE SUPERHEROINE! SHE WAS IN A PANIC AND HAD TO DO SOMETHING SPUR OF THE MOMENT. Then again it's the WRITER'S FAULT.

I enjoyed the episode (but then there has yet to be one I've disliked)
I loved the interactions with Kara and Winn and The last scene with Maxwell Lord spying in the sisters was very interesting. Can't wait to see how everything plays out in future episodes.

The bit everyone mentions regarding the quicksand didn't really bother me. Not all that familiar with how quicksand works to judge how likely it would be for a person with super strength to escape from though it WASN'T just ordinary quicksand. (just based on the thermite comment) plus she escaped fairly quickly so as said it didn't bother me.

Regarding the 'child' trapped in a box and Supergirl NOT using x-ray vision....I didn't have an issue with that either. Supergirl had to take some time (even if was only a short time) to escape from the quicksand, plus the box with the 'child' in it was moving. In such situations were every second counted it seemed perfectly natural to me that she would accept what she was hearing, thus focusing all her energy on escaping quicksand and rescue the endangered 'child' rather than waste precious seconds using x-ray vision to scan the box. I don't think she even thought (or had time to think) that it was a trick.

That's not an excuse. Ordinary quicksand doesn't become magically capable of containing a Kryptonian just because the star of the show can shoot lasers from her eyes. That's not how good fiction works.

For the most part, the ordinary should remain ordinary, unless a suitably appropriate explanation is given to justify the transition into extraordinary. Some things (like the laws of physics) have to be adjusted or ignored for the sake of the plot, but the extent of the restrictive capability of quicksand is not an example of such.

Huh?

That's very quickly becoming the default excuse for the inexplicable loss of common sense.

I wondered the same thing, but I chalked it off to...she is still VERY NEW to all of this, and if I were sinking fairly quickly in quicksand, I might forget what power to use where as well....lol

Well, until I'm in that situation, I can't really say.

I guess I still see her as a kid, 24 years old to me is a kid, and I have no problem with her still fleshing out all that she is. And not only still a kid, but someone that was very much shielded from the real world.

Seems to me we have gone from "knowing little, and not using any" of her powers for years to "well Superman does it" or "Superman could have done this" etc.... with very little time in between.

I just think, we are still at a point that these nitpick stuff is just that.....last few episodes I better see much more fleshed out super power usage, and by 2nd season....DEFINITELY. Right now, just not that big of a deal.

I think you can. It's not difficult.

So this "kid" can think to inhale deeply and suck in poisonous gas, but not fly straight up out of quicksand?

Seems to me we have gone from "knowing little, and not using any" of her powers for years to "well Superman does it" or "Superman could have done this" etc.... with very little time in between.

Nope. Not what this is about.

Yeah, it is, because it's not an issue of experience. It's not rocket science. When your hand is submerged in water, and you want it to be dry, you take it out. When you're hungry, you go get something to eat. When you're trapped in quicksand and you can fly fast enough to break the sound barrier, you fly straight up. None of that is hard, none of that is complicated, and not of that is dependent on experience. It's common sense.

I generally agree with this.

Now, we often forgive science goofs (especially in fantasy). But this quicksand scene was a double whammy - it was wrong twice. Not only did it invoke the popular misconception about quicksand, but it alleged that Supergirl couldn’t overcome the weight of a thousand or so pounds (which is approximately the brute force power it would take to extricate a human body from the muck). Yet, we know from the pilot episode that milady is strong enough to carry airplanes. :word:

Too bad it's Mythbusters last season. Would be nice to see if a wall of ice can cushion an explosion or not. Other than the obvious suspension of disbelief moments I liked the episode for Winn's character development, insight into J'onn J'onzz, and Winn's dad (now my 2nd favorite villain of the show).

When you're trapped in quicksand and you can fly fast enough to break the sound barrier, you fly straight up.

Except that IS what she did, after freezing the quicksand which would seem to suggest that for whatever reason she was not able to do so beforehand.

It wasn't just a wall of ice, the sprinkler system went off over that entire area...therefore the deep freeze went further than what we saw.

Why would she have not been able to do so beforehand? Why would she have to freeze it before being able to fly straight up? What would that actually accomplish?

The reason she didn't do it right away is because the plot wasn't ready for her to do so. All you've done is prove that she could've escaped as soon as she landed in the stuff.

Honestly, I don't need this much explanation to enjoy a show. I need more explanation when discussing politics, but a tv show....not really. I just enjoy it, which I did. :)

And that's fine, but I think constructive criticism is necessary.

There is a difference between constructive criticism and anal nit picking IMO.

Constructive criticism...YES!
Flaming, trolling (or whatever you wish to call it):nuhu:

No flaming or trolling going on here, but I do like the term "anal nitpicking" lmao.

Eww. Extracting bugs in your bum!

Oh wow..... "Mind Sweep" please...
