Yes, she is iconically terrible.

This is where, for some reason, I always feel duty bound to defend Katie Holmes.

She was fine. Just fine.

The problem was she was acting against some acting giants. She got swallowed up. Her performance would have looked pretty good in BvS or Suicide Squad.

Rewatching Black Panther and my only problems with this movie are the bad FX, the bad train fight, and killing Andy Serkis. He should’ve been in the sequel.

The bad FX is frustrating coming from a studio with so many recent dollars stored up. The train fight is a disappointing climactic battle between the hero and villain. And it’s a shame we won’t see Serkis again. I agree on these 3 issues, but I really like the film otherwise. One of my favourite MCU solos.

I came out of it happy but mildly disappointed considering the acclaim, but the more time passes the less some my nitpicks bother me. It’s definitely one of my favorite MCU solos as well.

Thankfully visuals have to be truly horrible for me to notice, it took me forever to see the floating bodies in BPs last fight. Though Okoye going down the stairs in the casino fight did make me cringe. For me a bad story and acting runs a movie way more than bad FX. That’s why Aquaman, while gorgeous, frustrated me so much cause a lot of the acting was not good and the story needed more work.

That also makes sense. BP is a major cultural event and landmark in film, and by that nature some of the acclaim will be for things that take place offscreen and for what it achieved beyond just being a good film. At the same time I wouldn’t put it in the very top echelon of films which are raved about solely for their technical and artistic merit without impacting the world at large. For me it’s very good rather than great, which is enough to make it a contender for best MCU “solo” along with my other faves Iron Man, TWS and Ragnarok.

Yeah but I've said before this seems kinda par for the course for blockbusters nowadays. I thought BP had some truly terrible FX at times, but the movie is still good and was very successful. I think studios don't really care much because they'll still make money.
Look at Alita amazing FX. Some of the best I've seen in years...but it's about to flop at the box office.
Would you rather have a good movie with bad FX that make money or a good movie with great FX that flops? Studios gotta make their money. And they should be mutually exclusive, but they are nowadays

I see a mixed bag really. For eg Thanos and the deaging tech from Marvel have both been awesome and I don’t know why they bother putting so much effort into that aspect and not others. Top FX sells with the right IP and marketing, especially overseas. Avatar is still the biggest all time worldwide grosser 10 years after it came out on the back of its technical achievements. I also think it gave Aquaman a big boost.

I'm in the minority but I wasn't that impressed by Thanos. He wasn't bad, not by a long shot. But I wouldn't rank him among the top 5 best. Or at least I have to think about it

I thought the CG on Thanos was fantastic. You rarely get a CG character where you really can get a sense of the weight and movement of the character.
