I'm going to wait until I play a few more things before I fill out the categories, but I can tell you right now my game of the year is XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

I'm of the opinion that for a couple of years now, we've been at the point in a generation where developers are holding back their best stuff for the next generation, so as a result the games we do get are by and large overly derivative and "safe" for lack a of a better word. Developers and Publishers are focused on making as much money as they can while they can before they have to switch to next gen. In such an environment XCOM feels like a breath of fresh air. It's unlike anything I've ever played (closest being Valkyria Chronicles, another fantastic game), and for that alone it would be high in the running for my GOTY, but the fact that it's actually really ****ing awesome easily pushes it ahead of other games released this year. It's basically 2012's Dark Souls for me. It's challenging. It punishes sloppy play. It requires to you think before you act. But it's oh so rewarding and satisfying when you understand all of the mechanics and can play it well.

The Walking Dead, no doubt, was my GOTY. It surprised me on many levels I wasn't expecting.

2012 was terrible to me, though. I got only 5 games this year and it wasn't games that I was hugely anticipating. Also, I only own one game of the poll and my categories will narrow down to few games:

Looking at that list at the top, what an overall underwhelming year in gaming. Seems rather boring in comparison to years past. Nothing stands out as clear GOTY to me.

I'm going to fill in the other categories later but as for now, my goty is The Walking Dead. As I wrote in another thread, it's an experience unlike anything I've ever played.
