Hello.

I'm in the process to create a character.

Is the "hyphen" trademarked by Marvel?

Spider-Man
Spider-Woman
Ant-Man
Giant-Man

And so on. DC Comics never uses the "hyphen" or so it seems.

Superman
Batman
Catwoman
Animal Man

I remember that MARVEL sued FILMATION because they created a (cool) character called "WEB WOMAN" long time ago, in 1979 or so.

Honestly, how do you like a superhero name being written?

Example:

Foxman
Fox Man
Fox-Man

Which is the most correct form in English?

Super Sanchez? :o

Is E-Man going to come in here and tell people to respect the hyphen?!?

Is there really a correct way in English to write a superhero name?
I think these names are correct as long as you see them written the way every official format writes the name.

There can be a Web Woman these days without any lawsuit to follow..

As long as they wear their underwear on the outside of their pants I think you'll have a hit. Names don't matter.

LMAO.

I think the "DC COMICS WAY" works better when the first name is short?

"Super"
"Bat"
"Cat"

Maybe if the first name is LONGER than that, I think it's either the "MARVEL Way" or - better - no hyphen, just space.

I guess...

Honestly with the genre exploding as it is I think you should just google the names of the person you think you'd like then make sure they 1) Aren't taken by a big name Super and 2) Aren't very similar to another one so people think that you're just using a likeness to make money unless it's a parody thing. If it's parody then it's protected under the Fair Use act. (Methinks anyway)

Foxman: Cape, maybe superpowers.
Fox Man: No tights wearer.
Fox-Man: No cape, superpowers.

Also

Mr. Fox

The Fox

The /color or characteristic/ Fox.

This is a debatable point.

I can see why people connected Web Woman to Spider-Woman.

This doesn't mean anyone cannot create insect-themed characters anymore...

Yes but if you use a character called The Amazing Arachnid with similar powers or Someone with identical powers and equipment but a different name then it's just copying.

Making a character with insect powers is fine as long as it isn't a blatant copy of anything.

For reference look up Fighting American by Liefeld. It's terrible. :p

:woot:

I got a name suggestion that just popped to mind all of a random sudden.
Fox Spice.

no, I am not familiar with any character in Marvel called "the Hyphen"

I believe the name would be up for grabs

Man-Man

He has all the powers and abilities of a normal man but when he gets angry he has the powers of an angry man!

I think that's a Mega Man boss name and therefore taken. :o

Why bother with a compound word for the name. Try coming up with something that doesn't end in a pronoun. The thesaurus is your friend here.

Yeah! If he's a Super hero then use your imagination for a name like 'Super"-man. Make it ironic. :o

I know, but it depends. You can do that with some characters, of course. This new character of mine doesn't require that.

You want to know something funny? Sometimes I make a sentence from an Italian and a Japanese word mix.
