This thread is for the new comic title that was released today (11-01-06). All discussion, including reviews, of the comic, issues, news and its arcs will be done here. To start, her eis my review to issue 1:
SUPERMAN CONFIDENTIAL #1
REVIEW:
Superman Confidential might be seen as another tie-in to Superman Returns as the new book that reintroduces everyone back to Superman's early days comes out the same time everyone is back on board with the character in movie media (with Smallville too). But its actually here to help out, continunity-wise, with the impacted changes thanks to the event known as Infinite Crisis. The book's purpose is to tell key elements from Superman's life. It is the same purpose Legends of the Dark Knight had and what Batman Confidential has as well.
The story is basically about kryptonite and how Superman experienced for the first time. So far, its only seen in the beginning when Kal-El arrived on earth and its found by people (something tells me that's China) who take it to their home. Superman seems ready at the beginning at whatever that can harm or kill him because in this issue, he always wonders if what will be thrown at him (a bomb, a weapon, etc) will be the one thing that will go as far as killing him. Because he knows he can not be THAT invurnable. As for art in the story, I have read four Tim Sale books (Batman: The Long Halloween & Dark Victory, Superman: For All Seasons, Daredevil: Yellow) and if you read those as well and handled the art, it'll be the same here. I know people started to wonder if the art would be okay or bad just from the preview posted weeks before. Trust me, its fine.
Our characters in this issues are the well known Clark Kent/Superman, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, & Perry White. With the villians being the Royal Flush Gang. Lois & Clark are reporters, like always, but here they are like detectives. Jimmy is seen here as a young man and not like a copy boy or a kid at all. Clark is shown as an experienced reporter and experienced in his double life, but always makes sure on safety on situations and that there might be somethign that can harm him. Lois always does her sarcasm to Clark, but in a cute way and it doesn't seem like she has anythign against him (well until further notice as its unknown what was kept or not in their origin (see next paragraph)). Perry is....Perry. The Royal Flush Gang is what you know them as (how they look in this issue reminds me of the Batman Beyond version) but in the story they're after media coverage. Since this is part one of a six-part story, there's not much else beyond this to know why they do this or what is their relationship with Luthor. So more on them next issue.
So after Infinite Crisis, everyone has have this question in their heads: because of the changes in continunity, what is the main origin story for Superman: John Byrne's Man of Steel, Jeph Loeb & Tim Sale's For All Seasons or Mark Waid's Birthright? The answer is: I DON'T KNOW. To be quite honest, its too early, maybe way too early, to tell. But chances are, its none of those origin stories. When I opened the book, the first panel showed Kal-El's ship leaving the exploding Krypton. I saw the "S" on the ship and at first I thought "Birthright". But the ship's design isn't from that story, nor Man of Steel (For All Seasons didn't show a ship). The ship itself from this book is actually the ship from the Golden/Silver Age. Plus, when you add what we learned from the arc running in the Superman title that was a "super-boy" in Smallville, its obivious that its not one of those three origin stories. So there would have to be a new origin story (speaking of which, when is that coming?) because of Infinite Crisis and its effects shown here.
So overall, this issue was not a disappointment at all. Not only does this help out on what was kept and what wasn't thanks to Infinite Crisis, but it also helps new readers (including me) on retellings of what happen in the character's life so they don't have to go back and read old issues that may not be in continunity anymore. The story itself leaves me with wanting the next one to see what's in store for our characters, and us. We have another winner here.
RATING: 8/10
SUPERMAN CONFIDENTIAL #2
REVIEW:
After the great first issue, the second issue has arrived and it proved to be another best. The reviews, besides mine, were all good and positive. It proved that this Confidential series on both Superma & Batman, was worth getting. Which is why I want a Wonder Woman Confidential book.
The story of this arc is all about Superman facing off against kryptonite for ther first time. Like the first issue, Superman has not encountered kryptonite yet. It has been seen (and heard, as it thinks as well) but Superman has not encountered yet. However, to move the story on that part, it has been revealed that Tony Gallo, one of the villians in this arc, has got it in his museum. So it is now close to Superman's home. But this issue isn't about kryptonite at all, I don't really think this entire arc is soley on kryptonite, the real storyline is with Lois & Superman and the conflicts they face on themselves.
For Superman, he has been told though everything including the newspapers that he is indestructible. Now while that is true on some level, Clark doesn't buy neither does his father. He knows there has to be something that he can't handle, and its here that he's proven right. When he goes to save an island from a volcano, he goes inside within the lava, and while his skin was fine, he couldn't breathe and he was suffocating. This led to him to talk to his parents, leading to a promise that if something happens he should talk to his father. Now his time with the volcano also stressed out and broke off his date with Lois, who is the enxt person we'll gonna talk about.
For Lois, she has been dating Superman since.....well a while. She's a woman that if her date doesn't come, she'll move on to other things. Which leds to her to go with Tony Gallo early than expected. While it was part of her assignment from Perry, something goes on between Lois and Tony. And Tony kisses her on the cheek, which after Tony leaves and Lois looks up, Superman has seen that. The conflict that is now growing between Clark/Superman (mostly Superman), Lois & Tony is what I believe is the main storyline, with Superman's fear of a weakness that will led to kryptonite being a subplot. Its a story where Superman does not want to miss dates with Lois, and does not want her to be so mad at him that she will breakup with him and move on. Its a situation every superhero feels when a conflict starts between you as a man and doesn't want to put on burden on a woman, and you as a superhero and your duty to keep people alive. For what I've seen, chances are this is the first time this has happened to Lois & Superman. Will see how it goes.
The only other "character" in this storyline that I can talk about isn't Tony Gallo, as he hasn't been expanded here, by kryptonite. The reason why I say kryptonite is a character gioes from the fact that since issue 1, it has a mind of its own and we've been reading its thoughts. Besides Tony stealing the big kryptonite rock and taken it in to his museum, the only other thing is that the kryptonite says it can sense the "other" it has sent with. Namely Superman. That's basically it for that.
Unlike the first issue, where he got hints and clues to what was kept and what wasn't (Superman's origin, for example), we didn't get anymore here. I think we're gonna take a break from the continuity issues for a moment.
Overall, this was another great issue of Superman Confidential. The two issues alone show that this series is worth reading and to have. While the "main" plot of Superman and kryptonite is what this arc is suppose to be about, I'm glad that its more of a subplot and not the main plot. The purpose of the Confidential titles is to show & expand the characters of what made them who they are today. Superman experinceing kryptonite only in an arc is boring. Superman fearing that he has weaknesses and experiencing them before he encounters kryptonite, while fearing he is about to lose Lois because of his superhero duties is interesting. This was a great issue.
