Superman & Lois Superman & Lois General News & Discussion Thread (TAG SPOILERS!)

Since Tyler is in every episode it's likely a mix of present day and flashbacks.
I freaking LOVE flashbacks on this show. But I don't know if its worth him being missing in the present for more than a couple of episodes.

Why couldn't it just be both?

Loads of lovely flashbacks AND great present day core family shenanigans.

Superman's going to smoke on-screen for the first time.

Have they ever done "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow"? Because that would be a fitting end and they already have the super kids.

I hope Lana and Lois are more of a duo this season. That’s certainly one way to eliminate the “why so much screentime for the Cushings” issue from seasons past.
She's definitely more tolerable in an actually supportive role rather than separate concurrent plot.

Yeah I'm sorry... I don't love this. After cancer season, I wasnt hoping they'd go darker...

Lois having a miscarriage, cancer, and almost lost her family multiple times... I think they've suffered enough.

I mean, Superman “dies.” It would be weirder if they didn’t say this, imo.
I dunno, there are degrees of dark even in that.

Like... Superman 'dying' but its not gory and they take him straight to the fortress and put him in cryo so they all know its possible to bring him back, but they are just sad he's basically in a coma until they figure it out. Meanwhile they try to live in a way that'd make him proud.

Vs

Superman heart is violently ripped out, its gory and bloody, everyone thinks he's actually dead and are fully grieving, then Sam dies too and the grief reaches unbearable levels where every episode is nothing but heart ache and the characters have all become shadows of themselves...

Now, I'm not saying it won't be option A. Just illustrating even a Death of plot can be tonally lighter if they want.

Eh, I've loved the dramatic storylines thus far (ESPECIALLY the one last season), and as long as Clark remains his positive/optimistic/inspiring self and the family unit remains the strong beating heart of it all, I don't consider it "suffering" as a viewer at all. This show has been the best live-action iteration of Superman to date for me. Wouldn't want them to do any major tonal gear-shifting in the farewell season, personally. 🤷‍♀️

Going into the final season, I'd expect nothing less than their darkest hours before their biggest triumph. That's just....final season stakes imo.

No offense, but Option A would suck. If he dies and it is barely bloody and they just take him to the fortress so they can save him later on that just takes away the entire purpose of the death. There is no stakes there, there is no pain and loss. Might as well just have him fly off world for a few episodes because that isnt even really a death.

Some people should hold out hope of his return, but it should not be so implicit they can save him...otherwise it will be as worthless as the death in BvS.

(yes I know we all know he is coming back, I am talking in story)

I find it weird that all we hear usually is "I want to see Clark with a family and their domestic life" and then the same people complain about said domestic life. Like it will just be them playing high school football and going to barn dances and the kids will be all "Leave it to Beaver" with no drama and nothing bad will ever to happen anyone in the family. How boring would that be :funny:

I mean, I know a few people who literally suffered because they found S3 so triggering. There was a lot of crying & hurt there 🤷‍♀️

But I can only really speak for myself. I don't dislike darkness/drama in other contexts. I mean i'm one of few people who LOVED season 6 of Buffy 😅 And 'The Body' was one of my favourite episodes. I'm not against any kind of angst broadly. I'm not even against it in a Superman show if the tonal balance is there. But with Superman... I dunno, I mostly want it to be a source of uplifting comfort food. Thats what its always been for me. I want to turn an episode/movie on and finish feeling good.

I fell in LOVE with the show in S1 because IMO it got that balance right. I absolutely did feel good after each episode. The 'high stakes' moments of drama were there but they were fun because they were fantasy based and gently tropey (I love tropes). I.e. 1x11 ending with a great secret reveal and cliffhanger of multiple threats.

But personally, a full season depicting Lois Lane's breast cancer journey, from diagnosis, through treatment, on to surgery etc... in really focused detail... was just not great for me. It didn't feel fun to watch. It was no longer a comfort show. It was at times painful & heart breaking in a really unpleasant way. (P.s. I think Tyler & Bitsie were phenomenal throughout and it was well written for the most part)

Again... I'm weirdly fine with that kind of storyline in other shows. So I know this is a personal response that I've questioned a lot. I've concluded that I'd developed an attachment to this show being something lighter. I loved those joyful family moments like the S1 paint fight, the boys teasing their dorky dad, Lois & Clark muddling through every day parenting alongside reporter/superhero lives and drinking wine on the porch at the end of the day. And those are the kind of things we stopped seeing as the cancer storyline took over last season. We lost the fun moments.

And now... it just looks like we are getting a grief season. Clark out of the picture, and likely Sam dying too. So no fun family moments. No Lois & Clark parenting chats. No brothers teasing their dorky dad. None of the stuff I loved about the show.

So yeah... its too dark for me. Cause the balance isn't there. IMO the tone absolutely shifted away from where it started.

That's a bit strawman isn't it?

It doesn't have to be ONLY happy families with no drama whatsoever. There's a middle ground. I'm just saying for me, they crossed that line in S3 and seem to be continuing with that now.

I was talking more in general, not you. I said this back in like season 2 when everyone was whining about all of the kids (including some that love Smallville which was 95% teen angst) but as someone who teaches HS that is how kids are. If you want Clark and Lois to have kids it makes sense for them to act like kids. Melodrama is just part of it...and on a show that is on a rather low budget network they are going to play that up a bit more because of the audience (CW viewers) and because it is cheaper. Sometimes it was a bit much but then again...so are teens ;)

I get that the cancer story was triggering to a lot of people, but I also think it was an important story to tell for many reasons. I would rather they take that swing. I get what you are saying though.
