Review and discuss the film without worrying about spoilers here. No need to use tags in here!

Just got out of the film and really enjoyed it! I give it a good 8.5/10

I definitely think this is one of Gunns better films. He managed to tone himself town and give us good, mature humor and not air on the childish side. The audience laughed throughout and everyone clapped when Krypto went all Hulk on Lex Luthor and clapped at the end.

The guy next to me obviously was not spoiled because he gasped when Kara showed up. For the first time in Superman history, Kara appears in a Superman film! It is about damn time! And she is a hot drunk mess. Something that Clark seems to accept. So I hope their relationship is expanded upon in Supergirl because while they are in the same "scene" they don't truly interact.

I would say that David is probably my favorite Superman yet. I think he did a fantastic job of embodying the character (Tyler did a great job as well but he was held back by budget). I loved how human Gunn made him in the film. This Clark is flawed, far from perfect but you can tell that he does attempt to do the right thing. His interactions with everyone, esp Lois was A+.

Superman was the lead of course but Lois was right behind him with being just as important to the film. Im not sure where I place Rachel yet, its up there but...we've had some GREAT Lois's so its harder to make it to #1 (I think Teri is still #1 to me). Her going to the Justice Gang or whatever to help save Superman was great, her interaction with Terrific was great as was her interaction with Guy G.

Holt is probably in my top 2 as Lex? Guy is an evil genius through and through. His pure hatred for Superman blinds him and ultimately leads to his downfall but he is still charismatic enough that you don't hate him which is important in these types of films because he does murder a guy!

Of the Justice Gang, Terrific easily shines above them all. I think he gained a lot of fans with this film and Im interested to see where he shows up next.

I was afraid that Gunn would use Guy as a reason to Gunn-out but he held back and still made Guy a funny *****e. He got plenty of laughs.

Hawkgirl unfortunately is the weakest link of the trio. She didnt get much and just seems brash. If I had no comic knowledge, I would have no idea who she was. Why her wings magically appear out of nowhere. Why she has a mace.

Elemental man gets decent amount of screentime and you can easily grow to like him. I didnt really care for his baby though.

While this isnt my favorite actor to have portrayed Jimmy....he was enjoyable in this film. Making him a ladies man was an interesting choice. Tess being head over heels for him was unexpected. Her obession with him was funny.

Ultraman....idk. I think it was easy enough to guess he was a clone of Superman but Lex being able to control him like a video game character was cool. Him studying Superman for years to know how he fights was a great touch. With him going into the black hole....hopefully it leads to Earth 3!

Engineer was ok. Her fights was nice, she was cool enough.

Krypto definitely stole a lot of scenes.

Jor-El and Lara....so....they looked pretty. Their limited role was the entire catalyst for everything that happened so that was a good way to keep things tied to them. The message being "conquer Earth and reproduce with a BUNCH OF KIDS" was....not expected! Its very Loebs Supergirl.

Ma/Pa Kent were adorable though not my fave interpretations.

I think the film probably needed 10 more mins to flesh out some characters but overall it felt like a comic movie and an episode of STAS and I love STAS. This Superman is super but he isnt ultra powerful which I love because I hate over powered Superman.

Its so different from Man of Steel that you get whiplash thinking about the two lol. Though they kind of have the same message, only Gunn delivers it SO MUCH BETTER. But MoS has that ICONIC Krypton scene.

I may watch it again, im not sure but it got me excited enough. Now get me WW!

So I guess there will be no more wars in this universe?

And is Jor-El a bad guy now?

I agree with almost all of that (including your score) and even the things I was worried about (Ultraman, the monkeys, Jor-El being a dick) really worked. I think it only worked though because Ma and Pa were still around.

Lex went full Bond Villain...it was glorious!

Krypto steals the friggin movie...and that was hard to do because so many people are trying to do so! Shout out to Mr. Terrific who is just beyond cool and a bad[bleep]!

I think the key to the Ultraman stuff was, it was obvious to most of us (even without spoilers) but like say my GF had no clue and thought it worked. I am glad they didn't use him to frame Superman...that stuff is cheesy. Holding that reveal until the the last second was pretty cool. And yeah...if he ends up on Earth-3 I think we might know where this is all headed.

So I guess there will be no more wars in this universe?

And is Jor-El a bad guy now?
Of course there will be.

Jor-El seems kind of like the version from the Man of Steel reboot Post Crisis. Krypton was a cold and rather heartless place I just dont remember how cold Jor-El was because I havent read it in 20 years.

I liked it but it suffers from the same problems that a lot of the peak Marvel Studios output had: big VFX climax including portals or dimensional rifts. The dimensional rift portal thing seems to be a convenient plot thread for a potential sequel or even a Marvel-DC mashup in the future.

Cast was good, especially Corenswet. Hoult is a good Lex, not slick and suave like Clancy Brown or outright malevolent like Kevin Spacey but way better than Jesse Eisenberg.

The score did its job, but doesn’t elevate the movie the way Williams did with the original Superman or how Danny Elfman did on Batman and Spider-Man 2.

First of all, let me get this out of the way: TEAM EYEBROWGATE, WE ARE VINDICATED! ULTRAMAN HAS BLONDE EYEBROWS!!!!

On the flip side, Team Curved Shield...we'll get 'em next time. :funny:

Ok, now that that's outta the way....what a movie y'all. Is it perfect? No. As with most CBM's I have nits to pick. But this movie is fun and heartfelt and hilarious and surprisingly earnest and more importantly, it gets the lead three characters sooooooooo right, I'm beyond thrilled that there's a whole generation that's gonna grow up with this as their Superman. This is the first Superman movie in existence I've ever loved. And I'm also thrilled that Mr. Terrific will have a whole host of new fans too because what a lovely showcase for him.

But since I mentioned those nits, let's pick those first so we can get to the good stuff:

-Not NEARLY enough of the Daily Planet and DP Clark. They were all perfectly cast, we barely got any time with them, and I need a whole damn show of it.

-Needed more Clark/Lois scenes. They were both sooooo good, I feel robbed that we didn't get more time with them together. That interview scene was indeed a major highlight as I expected. Needed more Lois in general. Because again, perfect casting.

-Some of the CGI was indeed iffy in parts. Not like, The Flash bad, but still some noticeable digital double moments. There's one flying shot in the opening sequence that had me seriously worried, but thankfully that was probably the worst shot of the lot.

-The score. It wasn't bad, had some very nice moments, and I'll be buying the soundtrack for sure, but as I expected, it just wasn't particularly iconic on it's own. The different variations on the Williams theme were absolutely lovely but I'd just prefer if this Superman has his own proper theme.

-Lex's ending! I know this doesn't rule out him becoming president, but it certainly makes it feel less likely. I really wanted him to get away scot free, even on a technicality or something, because need to THIS Lex, specifically, as president, dammit! 😭

Now for the good (great!) stuff!!!!

-Happy Birthday to David Corenswet, my New Favorite Superman of All-Time!!! Honestly, I knew he'd be perfect from that first episode of The Politician onward (6 years ago now, Jesus), but even I wasn't prepared for all the facets of Clark he'd give us. Like, Superman specifically - forget Silver Age, I was shocked at how much GOLDEN AGE personality they gave him. His sass, his willingness to be brutal when the situation called for it? Definitely some Morrison Action Comics influence in there for sure. SUCH a pleasant surprise! Also, dude saved a squirrel. A squirrel!

-Nicholas Hoult is already the definitive screen Lex Luthor for me, and Rachel is now the definitive Lois (which is a much bigger acheivement since there have been several phenomenal Lois's I've loved. Lex...not so much)

-This one's probably more of a hot take, but I really enjoyed the cinematography. There were some absolutely gorgeous shots in this thing. I remember several fairly arbitrary moments that were just so nice to look at, I kept thinking "damn, they shoulda put that shot in a trailer!"

-The Kents were absolutely precious. And Clark's room. And Krypto? Are you kidding me? Pure joy.

-I was shocked in a good way about how closely the geopolitical situation in this mirrored a certain one happening in real life right now, and what shocks me is what it had to say about it. I did not expect Gunn to go there and I'm pleasantly surprised that he did.

-Which leads me to the story/themes, which I adored. Clark feeling that empty attachment to Kryptonian holograms and listening to their messages to soothe him because it's the only time he ever feels like he belongs, then figuring out throughout the film that he belongs through his humanity is just a beautiful, beautiful thing. Especially since he views humanity more fondly than they view themselves. Recognizing that within himself? I cried so hard. Now, if you don't want to hear my thoughts on politics, skip the next part....

.....

....Ok, you were warned lol. So I know Gunn mostly took the route with Jor-El/Jonathan that he did because he was writing a love letter to the man that raised him, BUT viewing this movie through a Jewish-coded lens, as I always tend to look for in Superman stories for obvious reasons, I feel like the portrayal of Jor-El and Lara might be reflecting the way a lot of Jewish folks I know feel about the state of Israel and their government right now. Because the Kryptonians here weren't, like, mustache-twirling evil. The way they were talking about the people of Earth very much brought to mind an interview I saw a couple of months ago with a zionist woman in Tel Aviv. It's a misguided view of people and a place they've never actually taken the time to know, and only know what they've been told their whole lives. And I personally know a couple of Jewish folks who are deeply disgusted with those viewpoints and the current climate in their homeland, and it seems like a lot of people in the Jewish community feel the same. Regardless of whether or not this was a deliberate parallel, I do believe the message that you are not the attitudes of your forebears, and you are not where you are from, but you are who you choose to be, is as Superman as it gets. Hell I've had that last part on a Superman/Iron Giant t-shirt for years. While I can understand why some would be bothered by the accidental optics created by that message in terms of what immigrants in the US are currently dealing with, I have to say the way it's presented, I don't think THAT particular optic comes across...like at all. But I respect the opinions of those who feel differently.

-Back to a lighter note - the action? Are you kidding me?!?!? Soooooooo much fun to watch! Particularly loved the bit where Supes used his brain to beat The Engineer/Ultraman combo when they had him in that next-level chokehold lol.

-I saw this with my aunt, who is usually my go-to representative of the "general audience." She's dying to see it again. Said it was the most she's ever laughed in a superhero movie. That's right, we got a Superman movie that's actually FUNNY, and Superman himself is one of the funny characters in it! I can't begin to express what kind of fresh air that is for me.

-Karaaaaaaaaaaaaa. My drunken queen! Can't wait to spend 2 more hours with you next year. :mrk:

That's all I've got for now as I'm that kind of tired I used to get as a kid after not being able to sleep on Christmas Eve because I was too damned excited. But I'm sure I'll have plenty more to talk about at a later time.

Damn, sorry this was so long! I will close by keeping a promise I made like a year ago: I said if James Gunn actually managed to make a Superman movie I loved, I would stop saying mean things about him. So while he'll never be a fave and I'm still hoping for a Superman sequel from another director....from now on, I'm gonna be nice and keep my mouth shut on any intruding negative thoughts when it comes to this man (unless he like...commits a crime or something 😬). It's the least I can do for the gift of this movie that he just gave me.

On first watch, I rated it a 9/10. Had the biggest stupid grin on my face for most of the runtime, had a good cry, then went back to grinning WHILE crying. Probably looked a bit psychotic now that I think about it. :hehe:

Snyder's Pa Kent: Let them drown? Eh?

Gunn's Jor-El: Conquer them all!

Unless it's Donner, don't expect Superman's dads to get any respect. Brando/Ford 4 Life!

For the government scenes i think they should've used Waller over Flag.

Also wish that Lois/Lex had a scene together. We needed them to have a verbal sparring match.

Could've also used a bit more of Cat and how she differentiates from Lois apart from looks. At least hit on Clark.

Also in regards to Karas outfit - kind of disappointed that the top is basically same fabric. Overall its the classic costume but id have liked a little difference between this and tv kara costume (which.....looks more expensive)

I wasn’t a fan of her only scene in the movie (like a drunk sorority girl), but Milly Aycock has a TON of promise that we hope gets fulfilled in next year’s movie.

I honestly didn't notice the eyebrows (the hair was too distracting...and awesome!) but I will watch for it on Thursday. But I will give Team Eyebrows their props. :smirk::o

As I was watching I thought back to some of the convos/theories we had last year and how wrong we were on some of them...especially timing of events. Hell there wasn't even any real (Zod help me) needle drops!

The fight with The Engineer and Ultraman was excellent...Superman outsmarting everyone from LuthorCorp was so much fun. And damn Luthor is not only evil...but he really is a 12th level intellect. He knew exactly how to have his people fight Superman...thousands of moves and strikes and plans. Also...and I cannot stress this enough...HE HAS ACTUAL MOTIVATION!! Ripped straight from the pages of the comics. Gunn couldn't help himself to throw a real estate issue in there but that was such a red herring. He wants the metahumans gone and he wanted to be authorized to kill Superman because Superman was holding back and ruining humanity because he is better than us.

I also love that this Superman is not Silver Age Superman...you nailed it its a lot of Golden Age and Morrison Superman. He is brash, he is cocky, he acts before he thinks and he believes the ends justify the means. I mean when he describes his "meeting" with the leader of Boravia...I can see the smile on Morrison's face when he sees it because his Superman would have done that. (as would the one who threw bad guys out the window back in the 30s. He has the sensibilities and dorkiness of Silver Age, but he has the vigilanteness of the Golden Age and the "Protector of the Oppressed" of Nu52.

As for the politics...as an American Jew I can say that I did not see the Israel/Palestine conflict in the Boravia story...to me that rang as Russia/Ukraine but now I can totally see it. I will say, how Lex treats Superman is how Israeli Jews see American Jews like me (especially if we moved there) so needless to say that rang super true to me. It is crazy though how Gunn really nailed the political climate today. War, a Tech Overlord, bots shaping opinions, people being swayed in a moments notice by a video...its going to resonate with people.

Oh and one thing I forgot...my only worry while watching the film was that when everyone turns on him on a dime he would go Snyder on the bit and be angry and judge humanity about it. He doesn't do that, he judges his parents and he judges himself. He wants to protect the world even from himself! This Superman would give Batman the kryptonite ring. I mean heck he told Guy he is Clark Kent. (Lois in the Hall of Justice was...damn that was straight DCAU type stuff!) When Lois brings him to Smallville and Pa gives him his speech...I can see my dad reacting when he watches that.

Oh and I love Supergirl (the gf laughed her butt off at that) and the explanation for why she is drunk. I also love that Superman feels he needs to explain things to the Superman Robots...and for that matter that he calls them Superman Robots!

I still cant believe they made Krypto work...and Guy...and Metamorpho...

Oh and shout out to Max Lord for his minor cameo at the end which got a huge laugh.

Oh and it won't be hard to get Lex into President mode...they can have him help Superman defeat whoever in Part 2 and get a pardon.

I wasn’t a fan of her only scene in the movie (like a drunk sorority girl), but Milly Aycock has a TON of promise that we hope gets fulfilled in next year’s movie.
I loved that! I am starting that graphic novel today because of that! My gf loved it too and was pumped to hear the Supergirl film is coming!

Some rambled thoughts from last night, though a little refined now that I've sat on it some more:

-The cast is the strongpoint, which doesn't surprise me with Gunn. Especially, the main trio of Corenswet, Rachel, and Hoult. All three are pitch perfect both in performance and characterization. Mr. Terrific is also a standout and quite funny. Everyone else is just kinda there and I wish we had really spent more time with the supporting cast. Jimmy is fine, Fillion's Guy is Guy, and the rest of the Planet are treated like wallpaper which is a shame because it felt to lively for what little time we spent with them. Not a fan of the Kents' actors, but them and Clark were cute.

- Krypto is absolutely adorable and I hope we see plenty more of him.

- The script feels half baked, as if I'm seeing something that only went through partial revisions. The most apt comparison I can think of that portion of The Batman's second act where you have a lot of neat ideas that aren't expanded upon properly. Movie feels like it's missing pieces, but things that weren't on the editing floor. Very surface level to a lot of it.

- The score is annoyingly repetitive. The compositions themselves are fine, but it felt like they made two pieces for the trailers and then copy pasted it throughout the movie where they saw fit. More annoying since there's only two needle drops and they're both for the Justice Gang.

- I never want to watch a Henry Braham's action scene again. They did the oner in Vol. 3 and just decided what if we did that worse. It's well staged and choreographed, especially Mr. Terrific's big set piece, but it felt like way too much way too often. A lot of the flying shots don't look great, but thankfully there isn't a lot of them. When it's just people chilling, movie looks pretty good. I do really like how the colors pop. Though, the two worst shots are Lex's establishing shot in which we stare at the sun for like 5 seconds before he walks into frame, and then Superman's big speech in which the sun constantly takes up the whole frame multiple times because David is walking and goes from blocking it to not. Woof, that was ****.

- Ultraman felt like such a waste, and as if he's only really there to explain away Lex getting into the Fortress. Some of the humor with him was really good, but I just really wish the chewed off more meat on that bone. I do really like how the clone lends itself into Luthor's jealousy and envy of Superman. Hoult's whole monologue scene was fantastic. Gunn knows how to write a fun crazy villain.

- Milly looks like she'll be a ton of fun as Supergirl! I'm looking forward to seeing her lead a whole movie next year. Looks like they're setting up some fun character stuff.

What was the opening credits like?

There's nothing stylized for the opening credits, just some text on screen giving a quick explanation on the world.
That was certainly interesting. I would've personally preferred flashes of scenes vs just text.

My thoughts after sleeping on the movie.

This is a solid 8/10 movie. I agree with @Ninjablade the script feels...half baked. A lot of big ideas introduced very fast at you and its almost overwhelming, But I actually do feel a LOT was left in the editing room. I'd be willing to bet Gunn's ideal cut of this is like 2hrs 40mins and fleshes out alot of these concepts but I think he may have felt pressure to make this movie feel a bit more swift.

And boy does it. The movie never has a lull and just moves at a clip, constantly. The cast is its strongest asset. Corenswet, Brosnahan, Hoult...everybody really do an amazing job and anchor this film and just give it a fun, joyful energy. I feel like I wanted more "downtime" scenes of Clark and Lois just..being Clark and Lois and exploring their relationship and Clark's life juggling his alter ego in general. Their scenes together are magic.

The movie overall just has a fun, vibrant energy to it that makes it nearly impossible not to like even if the script is messy. And you know what guys, sometimes a movie can get away with a messy script if its very strong in other areas (e.g. No Way Home). This is big on characters, humor, kinetic energy, solid action, a great heroic score, and a charming, hopeful Superman.

Gunn's Jor-El: Conquer them all!

I'm very curious if this characterization of Jor-El & Lara is going to stick, which for the record I'd be ok with since it was a revelation that led to a great moment where Clark discovers how good of a person he is. However, I wonder if we find out in a later installment that it's a method of introducing Zod who may have coerced them to say that or, OR the message was tampered with, but not from Lex or anyone on Earth but Brainiac before Superman's ship left Krypton. Tinfoil theory for now.

I wonder how that is going to play out w/Kara. Being a teenager seeing everyone you know die, supposed to look after your cousin, and potentially be responsible for helping carry on Kryptons legacy? Jeez.

Will be interesting to see how she differs from Clark. Would've been interesting to see it explored in this film as well after he hears the news
