Review and discuss the film without worrying about spoilers here. No need to use tags in here!
Of course there will be.So I guess there will be no more wars in this universe?
And is Jor-El a bad guy now?
How can Superman justify letting another war happen when he stopped this one?Of course there will be.
Nope.Shirt rip?
Dang. OK, well, maybe in the next one.Nope.
Karaaaaaaaaaaaaa. My drunken queen! Can't wait to spend 2 more hours with you next year.
On first watch, I rated it a 9/10. Had the biggest stupid grin on my face for most of the runtime, had a good cry, then went back to grinning WHILE crying. Probably looked a bit psychotic now that I think about it.![]()
I honestly didn't notice the eyebrows (the hair was too distracting...and awesome!) but I will watch for it on Thursday. But I will give Team Eyebrows their props.First of all, let me get this out of the way: TEAM EYEBROWGATE, WE ARE VINDICATED! ULTRAMAN HAS BLONDE EYEBROWS!!!!
On the flip side, Team Curved Shield...we'll get 'em next time.
Ok, now that that's outta the way....what a movie y'all. Is it perfect? No. As with most CBM's I have nits to pick. But this movie is fun and heartfelt and hilarious and surprisingly earnest and more importantly, it gets the lead three characters sooooooooo right, I'm beyond thrilled that there's a whole generation that's gonna grow up with this as their Superman. This is the first Superman movie in existence I've ever loved. And I'm also thrilled that Mr. Terrific will have a whole host of new fans too because what a lovely showcase for him.
But since I mentioned those nits, let's pick those first so we can get to the good stuff:
-Not NEARLY enough of the Daily Planet and DP Clark. They were all perfectly cast, we barely got any time with them, and I need a whole damn show of it.
-Needed more Clark/Lois scenes. They were both sooooo good, I feel robbed that we didn't get more time with them together. That interview scene was indeed a major highlight as I expected. Needed more Lois in general. Because again, perfect casting.
-Some of the CGI was indeed iffy in parts. Not like, The Flash bad, but still some noticeable digital double moments. There's one flying shot in the opening sequence that had me seriously worried, but thankfully that was probably the worst shot of the lot.
-The score. It wasn't bad, had some very nice moments, and I'll be buying the soundtrack for sure, but as I expected, it just wasn't particularly iconic on it's own. The different variations on the Williams theme were absolutely lovely but I'd just prefer if this Superman has his own proper theme.
-Lex's ending! I know this doesn't rule out him becoming president, but it certainly makes it feel less likely. I really wanted him to get away scot free, even on a technicality or something, because need to THIS Lex, specifically, as president, dammit!
Now for the good (great!) stuff!!!!
-Happy Birthday to David Corenswet, my New Favorite Superman of All-Time!!! Honestly, I knew he'd be perfect from that first episode of The Politician onward (6 years ago now, Jesus), but even I wasn't prepared for all the facets of Clark he'd give us. Like, Superman specifically - forget Silver Age, I was shocked at how much GOLDEN AGE personality they gave him. His sass, his willingness to be brutal when the situation called for it? Definitely some Morrison Action Comics influence in there for sure. SUCH a pleasant surprise! Also, dude saved a squirrel. A squirrel!
-Nicholas Hoult is already the definitive screen Lex Luthor for me, and Rachel is now the definitive Lois (which is a much bigger acheivement since there have been several phenomenal Lois's I've loved. Lex...not so much)
-This one's probably more of a hot take, but I really enjoyed the cinematography. There were some absolutely gorgeous shots in this thing. I remember several fairly arbitrary moments that were just so nice to look at, I kept thinking "damn, they shoulda put that shot in a trailer!"
-The Kents were absolutely precious. And Clark's room. And Krypto? Are you kidding me? Pure joy.
-I was shocked in a good way about how closely the geopolitical situation in this mirrored a certain one happening in real life right now, and what shocks me is what it had to say about it. I did not expect Gunn to go there and I'm pleasantly surprised that he did.
-Which leads me to the story/themes, which I adored. Clark feeling that empty attachment to Kryptonian holograms and listening to their messages to soothe him because it's the only time he ever feels like he belongs, then figuring out throughout the film that he belongs through his humanity is just a beautiful, beautiful thing. Especially since he views humanity more fondly than they view themselves. Recognizing that within himself? I cried so hard. Now, if you don't want to hear my thoughts on politics, skip the next part....
.....
....Ok, you were warned lol. So I know Gunn mostly took the route with Jor-El/Jonathan that he did because he was writing a love letter to the man that raised him, BUT viewing this movie through a Jewish-coded lens, as I always tend to look for in Superman stories for obvious reasons, I feel like the portrayal of Jor-El and Lara might be reflecting the way a lot of Jewish folks I know feel about the state of Israel and their government right now. Because the Kryptonians here weren't, like, mustache-twirling evil. The way they were talking about the people of Earth very much brought to mind an interview I saw a couple of months ago with a zionist woman in Tel Aviv. It's a misguided view of people and a place they've never actually taken the time to know, and only know what they've been told their whole lives. And I personally know a couple of Jewish folks who are deeply disgusted with those viewpoints and the current climate in their homeland, and it seems like a lot of people in the Jewish community feel the same. Regardless of whether or not this was a deliberate parallel, I do believe the message that you are not the attitudes of your forebears, and you are not where you are from, but you are who you choose to be, is as Superman as it gets. Hell I've had that last part on a Superman/Iron Giant t-shirt for years. While I can understand why some would be bothered by the accidental optics created by that message in terms of what immigrants in the US are currently dealing with, I have to say the way it's presented, I don't think THAT particular optic comes across...like at all. But I respect the opinions of those who feel differently.
-Back to a lighter note - the action? Are you kidding me?!?!? Soooooooo much fun to watch! Particularly loved the bit where Supes used his brain to beat The Engineer/Ultraman combo when they had him in that next-level chokehold lol.
-I saw this with my aunt, who is usually my go-to representative of the "general audience." She's dying to see it again. Said it was the most she's ever laughed in a superhero movie. That's right, we got a Superman movie that's actually FUNNY, and Superman himself is one of the funny characters in it! I can't begin to express what kind of fresh air that is for me.
-Karaaaaaaaaaaaaa. My drunken queen! Can't wait to spend 2 more hours with you next year.
That's all I've got for now as I'm that kind of tired I used to get as a kid after not being able to sleep on Christmas Eve because I was too damned excited. But I'm sure I'll have plenty more to talk about at a later time.
Damn, sorry this was so long! I will close by keeping a promise I made like a year ago: I said if James Gunn actually managed to make a Superman movie I loved, I would stop saying mean things about him. So while he'll never be a fave and I'm still hoping for a Superman sequel from another director....from now on, I'm gonna be nice and keep my mouth shut on any intruding negative thoughts when it comes to this man (unless he like...commits a crime or something). It's the least I can do for the gift of this movie that he just gave me.
On first watch, I rated it a 9/10. Had the biggest stupid grin on my face for most of the runtime, had a good cry, then went back to grinning WHILE crying. Probably looked a bit psychotic now that I think about it.![]()
I loved that! I am starting that graphic novel today because of that! My gf loved it too and was pumped to hear the Supergirl film is coming!I wasn’t a fan of her only scene in the movie (like a drunk sorority girl), but Milly Aycock has a TON of promise that we hope gets fulfilled in next year’s movie.
There's nothing stylized for the opening credits, just some text on screen giving a quick explanation on the world. What was the opening credits like?
That was certainly interesting. I would've personally preferred flashes of scenes vs just text. There's nothing stylized for the opening credits, just some text on screen giving a quick explanation on the world.
Perfect time to start it, as you’ll find it basically opens where this movie left off for her.I loved that! I am starting that graphic novel today because of that! My gf loved it too and was pumped to hear the Supergirl film is coming!
Gunn's Jor-El: Conquer them all!
