Personally, I think they are outdated and pointless. Do they break up the color? The bright yellow belt already does that.

We need a more modernly-designed Superman, in my opinion.

EDIT: Dammit, the poll didn't start for some reason.

Probably a merger with costume thread.

If they're already going with the bright red cape, the high hooker boots, and blue tights...might as well keep the red briefs. It goes with the overall design.

With Supes' suit...you either buy it all, or not at all. And personally, most attempts to 'modernize' it, or make it look more 'serious' or 'realistic/utilitarian' just draws more attention to how silly the whole thing is in concept anyway.

Undies. Know why? 'Cos if you take them away from him, your gonna have theater after theater full people staring at his super-crotch...

I'm just saying, it's just really random to have them there.

Look....this might be going to extremes as an analogy, but...

If you were doing the Smurfs live action....should we keep the white leggings, or go with a more modern, darker color to match the rest of them?

Dude....they're Smurfs.

:O

Superman is not a Smurf.

That's not the point. He's as fantastical as they are, basically....so going in, you either buy the fantasy and all that it entails, or you don't buy any of it. Changing just one thing like the briefs...or the boots...or the belt...whatever, the fact that he still looks like a guy dressed in funky pajamas while everyone else is dressed normally is the real issue. They're smurfs, he's a comic-book superhero. They both take a big leap of faith just to go and see. :yay:

If you remove the briefs because you think someone would find it silly...they'll probably then find the boots silly....or the cape....when in fact, the whole thing is silly to begin with, yo?

So leave the briefs.....because it looks better that way. ;)

If done properly, it could work. GL's gloves were taken out, but we got really cool green ones in it's place, which look a lot better, in my opinion.

It all depends on the design.

Those look like cartoons....and they'd still work better with the red briefs. ;)

I say - get rid of them.

I'm all for keeping the iconic Superman costume intact, but the undies have become a huge (pardon the pun) bone of contention. There simply isn't a reason for them. The cape adds some regality, the 'S' is there for representing his family shield (or just signifying the word Superman), the rest of the suit could be construed as a Kryptonian costume, etc .......... but the undies just are.

And as time goes on, and audiences expect more realism from their films, and Superhero costumes & effects get much more advanced, the red trunks unfortunately start to look a bit silly.

I've never felt that the costume wouldn't be the same without the trunks. Take away his cape, it changes Superman's whole look. Same for the 'S'. But the trunks are only a small part of it and in any pictures I've seen of him without the trunks, I've never looked at it and thought "that's not Superman"'.

As long as you have something red coloured around the crotch region - to replace that part which your brain is expecting to see - then I don't see why we can't lose the trunks. I felt this recent photoshop (which is all over the costume thread) did the best job I've seen yet of portraying a Superman outfit without the trunks. But whether you look at it up close or from a distance, that is still the Superman outfit - it doesn't detract from the overall look or make it look silly. It's 100% recognisable.

If anything, the outfit below without the trunks actually looks more like a proper Kryptonian outfit of some kind rather than a mish-mash of red and blue which Clark or Martha Kent threw together for him to wear.

Why not lose the boots as well...and just use a color pattern to replace what the eye is expecting to see?

I like the design below...but it also kinda' looks like he's wearing a reeeeaaally tiny, tight pair of speedos...which could be even sillier than full briefs.

It's a bird...it's a plane...IT'S SUPER CROTCH!

Because the boots don't bring attention towards his crotch for no reason.

All you've done their is change the colour of his undies... they are still there, they're just blue!

I think anyone who is bothered by the undies, i generally just bothered by Superman as a concept.

The whole point of his outfit is like the opposite of Batman. He's trying to be a colourful symbol, instead of intimidating or invisible.

Yes, you could take away the pants, but what would you actually be achieving? You'd be attempting to change a hero who has been established a certain way for decades.

Besides, I think this picture shows what can happen when you put Superman in a suit without pants...

It balances out the two dominant colors, red and blue. There's already plenty of red between the cape, logo and boots. The yellow breaks up the top and bottom halfs, as well as highlights the symbol.

Wait, so if you don't like the undies, you dislike Superman? Since when is his undies his defining symbol?

Since when did his crotch attract so much attention/concern?

Just be a man about it, and admit to the world that you worship a cartoon character that wears his skivvies on the outside...but he can fly and do super ^$%#@'in stuff, too. Be proud about it. Trying to sweep a little part of it under the rug only opens it up to more mockery.

C'mon.....cowboy up!

I seriously think anyone who has that much of a problem with the undies, must find it very difficult to watch any live action version...
