Tarsem Singh Offered to Helm The Brothers Grimm: Snow White

The battle of competing projects with a fresh take on the classic fairytale of Snow White is heating up. While we haven't had any developments on Francis Lawrence's Snow White and the Seven, and Universal's Snow White and the Hunstman has only just recently started development, it looks like Relativity Media has taken the lead in the race. Vulture reports the financier turned pseudo-studio has offered their fairytale iteration, The Brothers Grimm: Snow White, to director Tarsem Singh (of The Cell, The Fall) for his next gig. However, Universal isn't too pleased with Relativity's move for a number of reasons. Find out why below!

Relativity Media has a multi-year deal to co-finance three out of every four releases from Universal through 2011. But this new development by Ryan Kavanaugh's company is a gesture not unlike that of a competing studio. However, Kavanaugh preemptively acquired this spec screenplay from writer Melisa Wallack last June with announced intent to produce and greenlight its own 3D take on the classic story. So really it's Universal wearing the *****ebag hat in this scenario. Interestingly there's no mention of Brett Ratner's involvement, so I'm wondering what his position is on this debacle (and why isn't he wearing his typical *****ebag hat anymore?).

The battle is just taking off and while others seems to think either Relativity or Universal will back down, Kavanaugh is sick of just being the money man, and Universal is desperate for a hit. But the word on the street says Relativity's script is better, and with an offer out to Singh, a phenomenally stylistic director, they seem to have the edge at the moment. For now both parties are looking at every possible actress to take the titular role including Anne Hathaway, Scarlett Johannson and Natalie Portman. Surely Disney is loving sitting on the sidelines, but I'm not sure they'll ever get off the bench since the project hasn't made any progress since it was announced three years ago. Which Snow White adaptation would you like to see?

Seems the guys at Relativity are impressed with Dawn of War to give Tarsem this gig.

Exclusive: Tarsem Singh to Direct Relativity's 3D 'Snow White'

Relativity Media has closed a deal with Tarsem Singh to direct an untitled feature based on the Brothers Grimm's classic fairy tale "Snow White" that will begin production in March, the company has confirmed to TheWrap.

Melisa Wallack ("Meet Bill") wrote the 3D movie, which is described as an edgy, modernized re-imagining that will hew closely to the Grimms' original German folk tale.

The story follows Snow White as she teams up with a gang of seven quarrelsome dwarves to save her late father's kingdom from her evil stepmother.

While Tarsem is best known for directing the visually inventive Jennifer Lopez serial killer thriller "The Cell," it was his critically acclaimed 2006 fantasy film "The Fall" that most impressed Relativity execs.

Relativity remains interested in casting Natalie Portman as Snow White, though TheWrap has learned that Tarsem would prefer to cast an unknown in the star-making role, just as Tim Burton tapped little-known Australian actress Mia Wasikowska from HBO's "In Treatment" to star in Disney's billion-dollar grossing "Alice in Wonderland."

Universal is developing its own take on the classic fairy tale -- "Snow White and the Huntsman" -- which is described as a "Robin Hood"-type drama that focuses on the huntsman character, whereas Relativity's "Snow White" is more of a four-quadrant affair that will be looking to enchant family audiences.

Interestingly enough, there had been talk early on about combining the two competing projects, since Relativity co-finances three out of every four Universal releases (through 2011), but the scripts were deemed different enough that both sides opted to continue on their respective paths.

Disney is also developing "Snow White and the Seven," which features the dwarves as Shaolin monks, though that one is further away from the big screen than the other two projects.

Tarsem made his name directing commercial spots for Nike, Levi's, Coca-Cola and Miller Brew Co. His next picture is Relativity's "The Immortals," which stars Mickey Rourke, Freida Pinto and Luke Evans. Universal is set to release the action fantasy film on Nov. 11, 2011. Tarsem also served as the second unit director in India on David Fincher's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."

Relativity's Ryan Kavanaugh is producing "Snow White" with Brett Ratner and Bernie Goldmann. Relativity's Tucker Tooley will exec produce, while Rat Entertainment's John Cheng will also be involved in a producing capacity.

Tarsem is represented by CAA, and Vulture first reported several weeks ago that Relativity had offered him the project.

i'm probably one of the few that liked the first Brothers Grimm. :)

I don't think this is a sequel to the first film. The first film wasn't very good. It had some cool ideas, but Gilliam's direction kinda brought stuff down. Ledger and Damon were great together, but the film was less than that.

EXCLUSIVE: Saoirse Ronan could be cast opposite Armie Hammer in Relativity's The Brothers Grimm: Snow White that's an revisionist adult retelling of the fairy tale from director Tarsem Singh. Armie Hammer, fresh off The Social Network, has closed a deal to play Prince Andrew Alcott in the pic. But Ronan (Atonement, and the upcoming Hanna) is still only "in discussions" for the title role. Julia Roberts already has been cast. It's worth noting that Relativity plans to be in production first for a June 29th, 2012, release before Universal's Snow White And The Huntsman starring Twilight saga superstar Kristen Stewart gets going and comes out December 21, 2012. Supposedly, Viggo Mortensen is shaky in that version.

Lilly Collins Is Snow White
Lily Collins, who played Sandra Bullock's daughter in The Blind Side, has enchanted Relativity Media, which is in negotiations with the young actress to star as Snow White in its not-yet-titled retelling of the classic fairy tale.
Collins, who also is the daughter of rocker Phil Collins, is said to have blown away Relativity execs with her audition.
Tarsem Singh is directing the 3D feature, which will also star Julia Roberts as the Queen and Armie Hammer as the Prince.
Relativity's Ryan Kavanaugh is producing along with Bernie Goldman and Brett Ratner. Script is by Melissa Wallack and Jason Keller.
The film is slated for release on June 29, 2012 as it races to hit the screen before a competing Snow White project from Universal.
Collins, repped by CAA and ROAR, will next be seen in Screen Gems' Priest and Lionsgate's Abduction.

I approve of the casting although I would've preferred if Julia and Charlize swapped movies.

Between the three Snow White projects, this is the one I'm most excited for.

Tarsem Singh Updates Snow White

Regarding the look of the film

“If you looked at Gaudi’s architecture, based in England, done like a turn-of-the-century Russian film, done by an Indian guy," he laughed. "It’s kind of, like, very monochromatic – everything is in snow, but the costumes are very colorful, and so it’s like, no color and a lot of color.”
The costume design in Snow White

Singh said, particularly of his Evil Queen (Julia Roberts): “Usually for me I never know how actors give you all the trust, because the stuff that I make people wear can not look ridiculous, it looks ridiculous. I end up pushing it so much that if you don’t trust that in the end you won’t be left completely hammy… it’s amazing to get her trust. She just said, ‘No – I want to make a movie with you and in your style.’ So, for me, we threw everything out there and we'll just see how much is palatable.”

Should be interesting to see what Singh can cook up with for this film. Anyway, I'm sure this will be a visual treat.

Sounds great. Tarsem is easily one of my top up and coming directors, and I use that term because he does not have a whole mess of movies out, just 2 and they both look amazing.

Between the three Snow White projects, this is the one I'm most excited for.

There are three???

Hollywood is so unbelievable at times. I predict that only one of those three might actually do well, or all three will be supbar or a complete flop. I think the GA is going to think WTF when they see trailers for three movies based on the same thing.

Between the three Snow White projects, this is the one I'm most excited for.

I think there are only two; one is this movie, and the other is the Snow White and the Huntsman, with Charlize Theron as the evil Queen.

The other Snow White project is Disney's Snow and the Seven.

The film centers on a 19th century Englishwoman who returns to her Hong Kong home for her father's funeral, only to discover that her stepmother is plotting against her. She escapes to mainland China, finding solace among a rogue band of seven international warriors.

Regardless, I'm sure that this project is going to be the best among these three Snow White projects.

Nathan Lane and Robert Emms Join Tarsem Singh's Snow White

Nathan Lane is in final negotiations to join the cast of Relativity’s untitled take on the classic Snow White fairy tale.In what is sure to be a showy role, Lane will play the queen’s main servant, a man loyal to her out of fear.

Robert Emms, who appears in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse drama, has also signed on for the movie, playing the man-in-waiting to the prince.

Oh yeah, in the article it said that the film is described as a “spiritied adventure comedy.” I can't wait to see who they cast as the seven dwarfs.

Relativity Media To Release Tarsem Singh's Snow White On March 16, 2012

The battle over dueling Snow White films took another dramatic turn Tuesday as Relativity fired back at Universal by moving up the release of its untitled Brothers Grimm: Snow White movie from June 29, 2012, to March 16, 2012 — ahead of Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman.

A week ago, Universal caught Relativity off-guard when it announced it would open Huntsman on June 1, 2012, instead of December 2012.

At this point, it’s unclear whether Universal has the leeway to push up the release of its film again. As of now, director Rupert Sanders isn’t scheduled to start shooting Huntsman, produced by Alice in Wonderland’s Joe Roth, until August.

Director Tarsem Singh is set to start production on Relativity’s Snow White tale next month.

I don't really think this was a smart move by Relativity Media. Not only are they putting the production under tremendous time constraints but the movie will face some tough competition in March like John Carter, The Hunger Games and Wrath of the Titans.

I'm afraid that this move might end up doing more harm than good.

We'll see how it goes but I hope Singh can deliver even on a tight schedule, and I'm still waiting for the official title.

The concept art looks great. I'm curious to see what will be the final title for this movie.

I didn't realize that this one will have comedic elements.

More information on the Plot:

Snow White (Lily Collins) is a beautiful young woman soon to become the princess of a distant kingdom. Her stepmother, the Queen (Julia Roberts), an aging woman obssesed with maintaining her beauty and youth, that has killed Snow White's father and driven the entire kingdom into a financial "recession" due to poor managing skills. In order to pay for her beauty treatments, she charges the townspeople taxes to protect the kingdom from a monster that supposedly lives in the Dark Forest and hasn't been heard from in ages.

The Queen plans to seduce the young Prince Andrew Alcott (Armand Hammer) in order to marry him and gain access to his family's wealth, but he rebuffs her. Upon discovering that he is actually smitten by Snow White, the Queen orders a local huntsman to take her to the Dark Forest and kill her, but Snow White manages to evade him after discovering about his plan and eventually comes across the Seven Dwarfs - Half-Pint (Mark Povinelli), Cha-Cha (Jordan Prentice), Teach (Danny Woodburn), Julius (Sebastian Saraceno), Stench (Ronald Lee Clark), Butcher (Martin Klebba) and Grub (Joey Gnoffo).

The Seven Dwarfs as thieves who steal whoever passes by their cabin with their makeshift inventions. With their help, Snow White trains to become a skilled warrior and return to the kingdom before the Queen marries Prince Alcott, unaware that she'll also have to protect her people from the monster, that has decided to attack after years of wait.

Julia Roberts.... I just cant imagine taking her seriously in such a role.

Visually this should certainly be pretty interesting. I was wondering if this was going to have anything to do with the previous Bros Grimm film.

Tarsem is using orange and grey colors together which makes hes movie look very unique. 90% movies use blue/orange and so this movie will look very refreshing.
