The Amazing Spider-Man 2 TASM2 vs. Other Marvel 2014 Movies - Part 1

At least TMNT got a directors cut

Haha, I love ya spider-knight, you bring me great joy

Looks like GotG is already the highest domestic earner this year with $280 million and is predicted to cross the $300 mil mark. That's pretty impressive considering it was probably the underdog on most people's list this year, mine included. I was blown away by the film--it made my top 10 CBMs. And it definitely deserves the earnings.

How was it exactly the underdog? It was obvious that GOTG was gonna reach millions. I mean people were also anticipating this movie to no end. I rarely sense anything that people have the underdog vibe

August release. The highest August release was Sixth Sense 15 year ago and that made $293.

This is the first year ever that an August movie domestically outgrossed every other Summer tent pole movie.

And the highest grossing MCU that didn't have Iron Man in it.

I wasn't blown away, it was pretty much was i was expecting from the trailers, probably not exactly a film for me, but still glad it's been doing so well.

And Al Pacino calling the movie amazing.

I was surprised with how well TWS did.

I was going to be pissed if DOFP or TASM2 did better than TWS once I saw it IF the films were inferior.

DOFP I think really brought the franchise around.

I figured Transformers regardless of the quality would be the biggest hit of the Summer.

Guardians. I thought was going to do $250 domestically tops regardless of quality. I'm glad I was wrong.

It was an August release of an unknown property without a big name cast. It grossed $20-30 million more than predicted by most places on its opening domestic weekend and it has had amazing holds.

It has done as well as it has because it had great reviews, great word of mouth, and repeat viewers. These are things that couldn't really have been foreseen in advance. It is going to end up with over a 3x multiplier. Compare that to TASM2 which could barely manage a 2.1x multiplier. Audiences liked GotG far more than they did TASM2. The difference is as simple as that.

why the hell did you think that it wouldn't do that well in the box office anyway?

i'm pretty sure the movie had chris pratt, dave botista, a raccoon and a talking tree especially their love for rocket after MvC3 so despite the August release why wouldn't it reach millions?

also, i don't get sony's deal into editing out stuff and altering scenes just to purposely make it a complicated movie while for some stupid reason have the nerve to feel confident? wouldn't you be confident if the movie ended up being good to begin with? and as a result they just suffered the consequences. i just hope they hire some great writers for the third movie. my hope would be the writer behind red riding trilogy or even drew goddard.

August releases haven't made north of $293 ever.

And no Marvel movie outside of the Avengers and Iron Man 1 - 3 have made over $300.

well it shouldn't be surprising anyway. i saw guardians reaching millions a mile away.

Chris Pratt wasn't anybody until this film. Most people didn't even know who he was. Bautista was a wrestler in his first major film. And most of the talk about Rocket and Groot prior to release was about how stupid and cartoony they would be.

The closest thing to a draw was Zoe Saldana who has been in some big films and thus was known, but wasn't a huge star or anything like that.

None of those actors are a big name. The biggest name is Bradley Cooper, but you never saw his face. And not NEARLY enough people played MvC3 to ensure that GOTG would get a good crowd. To give you an idea, GOTG has made $554,304,119 world wide. If we say that the average ticket price across the world is $15 (probably a high estimate, but we'll go with it) that means roughtly 36,953,608 people have seen this film. MVC3 has sold 1.2 million units. So if EVERYONE who bought that game went to see this film, they actually would only make up just about 3 percent of the total audience.

In short, gamers are a tiny, tiny portion of the general audience. Just as we comic nerds are.

So, that's a long-winded way of saying, this film was in NO WAY a sure thing. It was an unknown property with only one mega-star that wasn't actually physically present on screen. It's success was definitely a surprise.

Anywho, back on topic.

I think the biggest problem with TASM2 is that it is by no means one of the worst comic films made (it's not nearly bad enough to be put in that same bracket) but that it's one of the most disappointing. The problem is that they got so many things very, very right that we got this little glow of hope...and then they got others so very, very wrong. It showed us that it had the potential to be great, only to take it away. And as such, it's one of the most disappointing comic films I've ever watched. Especially disappointing for me as a Spider-man fan, because I have yet to get what I consider a truly satisfying Spider-man film.

Oh well. I suppose I can always go watch SSM on youtube. :(
