I really hope Spidey has the best comic book movie of 2014. 2014 will be an all-Marvel competition. You got TASM 2, X-Men: DOFP, Cap 2, and GOTG. You also have Michael Bay's TMNT, which I don't count as "competition" for obvious reasons.
Since 2014 is an all-Marvel competition, I think it will be a bit embarrassing for Spidey if he doesn't have the best film. I'm not talking just box office but the quality of the film as well. Spidey is the king of Marvel and I think it is only right if he has the best film, especially since they have such a fantastic cast. Four of cast members are Academy Award winners.
Heck, I think it is more important for Spidey to prove he is Marvel's top dog now than it was ever been before. This isn't something that is happening too fast but it is happening nonetheless to an extent: Spidey's status as Marvel's poster boy is slowly dying. The comics have done nothing but regressed him back in development for the past few years while the rest of the Marvel universe continued to go forward. The video games are nothing too fantastic. Ultimate Spider-Man (the TV show) turned him into a gag character and into the exact opposite of who he is. He was killed off in both the 616 and Ultimate universes. He hasn't been shining in the movies either. Spider-Man 3 left a sour taste in people's mouths in 2007 and although TASM was a good film and solid representation of Spider-Man, it wasn't anything mindblowing due to it being an origin film and (naturally) covering a lot of the same grounds. People also need one film to get used to the idea of a new Spider-Man so soon.
On the other hand, the popularity of Iron Man and of the Avengers is quickly increasing. There was a time when Spidey had like 6 books and they had like 2 books. Now we are seeing stuff like these being reversed. If things continue at this rate for the years to come, Spider-Man will not only lose his status as Marvel's #1 top dog but will be pushed to living in the shadows of Iron Man and the rest. The FF reboot and X-Men films, plus their respective comics, also seem to be in a good direction.
But now the origin is gone. TASM 2 as well as the next 2 films after that will be your standard Spider-Man stories with an already established Spider-Man battling his villains. And as much as we probably hate to admit this, we live in a culture in which the film medium is seen superior to all the other film mediums. Therefore the general public's usual opinion of a superhero is almost entirely determined by the quality of the films and that opinion sometimes translates to other mediums as well. Take Batman for example. He has always been one of the most successful superheroes out there but Batman & Robin killed him in the eyes of the GA. TDK brought the GA's love for Batman back. Iron Man is another great example. Civil War ruined Iron Man worse than OMD ruined Spider-Man. The success of the movie not only made him (currently) Marvel's most popular character after Spider-Man but also saved him in the comics & gave him his reputation back.
Marvel is also continuing to put out mainly-high quality films. Cap 2 and Thor TDW look great. Avengers 2 and 3 will also be presumably great and Thanos might be one of the biggest things ever in CBM history. That being said, I believe that Spider-Man can make a comeback if Webb delivers a TDK-quality film. I think that will help him immensely especially in times like these. With the origin out of the way, they can do that now. They have the potential to do so in 2014, 2016, and 2018. Let's hope they make it happen. Spidey's overall future really depends on Webb and Sony.
