The latest issue of Famitsu magazine has details on Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection with online versus play! With the cost of 2800 Yen(1000 Yen if you already downloaded the old version of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection) you will be able to play FREE online versus matches with people all over the world! There will also be an online leaderboard that keeps track of player rankings! There is no official release date for the upgraded version of T5DR, but be rest assured that SD TEKKEN will keep you posted!

Special thanks to Dali on NeoGAF forums for the heads up!

Cool. Even though I have this game for my PSP, I might actually buy it for that!

so is this the first online fighter on a Sony home console?

No. There was some Street Fighter 2 re-release on PS2 (it was crappy though), and then there was Mortal Kombat Deception and Mortal Kombat Armageddon, on PS2, followed by Mortal Kombat II for PS3.

there was online fighting in MK Deception? I thought it was just the mini game that was online

It apparently had really good online play. It's a shame that the MK series made a comeback from the grave with Deadly Alliance, only to ruin itself all over again with rapidfire cheap sequels because their publisher needed money. Oh well, at least they have only hit mediocre instead of outright horrible.

I thought Deception was the best of the revamped series with Armageddon easily being the worst

I loved MK deception. I didn't bother with Armageddon because everyone said that it lost a lot of depth from Deception, which wasn't that deep to begin with. Also, I heard the fatalities were crap. It sounds to me like they tried to cram too many characters in the game so they had to give up a lot of gameplay-- quantity over quality. Hopefully though, the next MK game will really be something awesome. They're using the Unreal 3 engine, and Ed Boon promised the gameplay would be a big leap over the last wave of games. Personally, I'm hoping that they ditch the "dial-a-combo" gameplay system in favor of something a lot more timing oriented.

yeah just like the movie

So how is Tekken 5:DR for PS3? Does it look as good as Tekken 5 for the ps2? Slightly better?

Dark Resurrection is essentially Tekken 5. With two new characters, some new stages, and new costumes and customisations. A few tweaks to timings and moves for some of the characters too. It hasn't had any kind of graphical overhaul, but it does look slightly better on the grounds it can run in high definition.

Here's how it looks in the arcade version, the PS3 version pretty much being identical:

Just got back from a Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection tournament over the weekend. Placed 17 out of 33. The experience there was amazing. I saw moves and combinations he had never seen before.

Most people think that there are certain characters like Panda or Roger the kangaroo that are sorry and can't be used. That's a lie. I saw someone almost place 3rd using Panda. Every character has something special to use. You just have to know how.

How much is this game? I have Tekken 5 for the PS2 and might end up checking this out. Does it really look that much btter than it?

Dark Resurection is actually a perfect port of the Arcade version, so the graphics are better for one they cram in a lot of new content in terms of level redesigns, character costumes and items, as well as including 2 new characters (who will also be in Tekken 6).

It also has online play and leaderboards.

Playing it on PS3 at the tournament really has me thinking about getting a PS3 to hone my skills. There are quite the few differences between Tekken 5 and Dark Resurrection.

Not to mention two new characters. :p

Tekken 6 isn't that far away either.

so when will the online version be released? I was planning on getting this but Im going to wait till the new version comes out

I was under the impression is was already released. Maybe just for Japan so far? if someone can dig up the original press release that would help.

Apparently its being released August 1st in Japan. Hopefully the US version drops soon after that
