Spidey has had a pretty traumatic life. Now, I've tried to compile what I think are the 10 worst things. Some might seem worse than others (but carry more emotional resonance and are still referenced)... other traumatic events might make for crappy stories (see Pete's parents and The Other) but still need to be included. I was going to try to post a poll, but I'm not really sure how.

Here's my list...

1. Uncle Ben murdered.

2. Gwen Stacy dies

3. "Night of the Goblins" ... Pete's baby dies, Ben Reilly dies and Norman Osborn comes back from the grave.

4. Harry Osborn dies

5. Peter is buried alive for two weeks by Kraven the Hunter

6. Peter's "parents" are shown to be fake and Harry toys with Pete from beyond the grave.

7. Peter has his eye plucked out by Morlun, is killed and comes back as something else.

8. Captain Stacy dies.

9. Back in Black... Aunt May gets shot because Peter revealed his identity.

10. Jean DeWolff dies and Peter finds out the one who killed her was a cop who's been playing with him, pretending to help.

you forgot to mention aunt may's original death.

i would also say having electro getting him to beg for his life while completely owning him in battle was abad time for him, since it was the first time i think he has ever given up in a confrontation.

i think bar aunt may's original death, the basis of the first section of this have been covered.

I would though say that the worst thing to happen to spidey was getting bit by a radioactive spider but that's just me.

I bet thinking Mary Jane was dead - for quite awhile - was a bit upsetting...

The worst thing that have happened to Spidey?

Borned onto this cruel world ^^

Thinking he was the clone was also traumatic, as was when he thought MJ was dead, but they were both undone. I'm more thinking of events which have remained and still effect him today.

I don't think Aunt May's original "death" was traumatic. It was sad, but was graceful. It wasn't violent and wasn't a consequence of Peter's actions as Spider-Man. Now seeing your aunt take a slug to the gut that was meant for you... that is traumatic.

I like to pretend that the "slapping" MJ situation never occured.

Also, the cover for that issue was one of the worst I had seen.

Yeah the art during the crescendo of the clone saga wasn't my favorite. But it's cool to see that the stress of the possibility of the baby being deformed to the possibility of him being a clone take it's toll on his already screwed up Psyche.

May was gone. He had gone through the "Parker No More" Phase. He had a growing problem with his mental state that was connected to his weak right shoulder (it had been dislocated over 3 times during all of this)

Him flipping on MJ is human. and humbled him dearly.

Plus he had just been charged of murder, messed with by Traveller and Jackal and told he was a clone. Things were kinda crappy for Pete.

I am surprised no one has mentioned (Spidey) being handed over to JMS and Joey Q. yet.

(So i won't mention that....) :woot:

When did Peter slap MJ?

Oh, and does being abused by Uncle Ben count? Even tho it was out of continuity?

SSM 226. I'll never forget it because it's the issue that made me quit reading comics for 7 years. As a woman, it's hard to forget things like that. And I don't believe in making excuses like "he was stressed." He could have killed her; she was preggers at the time, too, and he could have killed their baby.

mre gets most "disturbing comment of the day" award. What out-of-continuity story had Uncle Ben fondling Peter?

I remember reading somewhere about an out of continuity story where Peter got "fondled". But it wasn't by Uncle Ben, I can tell you that much!

Oh god... Just what we need... Spider-Man as a walking PSA.

I half expect a rainbow to come out of his hand followed by "The more you know!"

Also, "Skip" is supposed to be an older boy who's parents just got divorced.... yet he looks like he's around 70.

Which issue was that? Sounds like an interesting story, I don't think i've ever read a story where anything even remotely similar has happened. The Spidey I know would rather die than beg for mercy dammit!!

I think no. 10 should be replaced by Ironman pressuring Peter to unmask to the public and no.5 should be replaced by Gwen Stacy cheating on Peter with Norman Osborn, furthermore having his kids. And I think Petes gone through worse than the Kraven thing. It should be off the list. Then bump down Ben parkers death to the no.2 spot and put Joe Quesada at the no.1 spot.

That never actually happened.
.. keep the faith- it will get ret con'd in the not too distant future.
