Iron Man 2 Terrence Howard gives Iron Man 2 Start Date

Good... now we need Thor/Cap/Avengers dates... Thor should be May/June 09... Cap should be Fall 2009... Avengers in Spring 2010.

Awesome, we have a date. Can't wait to see other things on the 2 movie.

It'll be fun to find out what's what in July at Comic-Con.

Marvel Rushing things a bit???

Jon Favreau: I am concerned, however, about the announced release date of April 2010. Neither Robert nor I were consulted about this and we are both concerned about how realistic the date is in light of the fact that we have no script, story or even writers hired yet. This genre of movie is best when it is done thoughtfully and with plenty of preparation. It might be better to follow the BB/DK, X/X2 three year release pattern than to scramble for a date. It is difficult because there are no Marvel 09 releases and they need product, but I also think we owe it to the fans to have a great version of IM2 and, at this point, we would have less time to make it than the first one.

I don't get it I really don't... I don't understand why Marvel doesn't spread the slate across seven years instead of four...

I think Marvel is wanting to strike while the Iron is hot so to speak, but they need to step back and look at what they have planned, believe me, I would love a Iron Man sequal in 2010, but not at the expense of quality. Marvel has several films due, incuding Wolverine's film next year and Thor and what looks like a Spider Man sequal so, Iron Man can be pushed back to 2011 along with Cap and then they can push Avengers to 2012.

I really can't understand how it seems that they want to do the same as other studios, rush a great franchise.

If Ironman 1 was so successful, it was because the quality of the movie, so don't understand why they want to make the sequel so quickly, and more when both the director himself and the main star haven't been contacted about the starting date.

Stupid studios.

That's probably the best way to do it. But even then... if Favreau directs he is going to be in the same bind in having to do both films back to back. Not only that but he is going to need to prep before these other films are even released. I still think Avengers needs to get pushed back to 2013 with none of the big characters occupying 2012 to play it on the safe side. Preferably 2014 b/c I want IM3 in the middle. There is no way this is going to work with the way the have it right now.

After reading the full article on what Favreau had to say, it's very clear that the man wants to give the fans a good IM2. I hope Marvel reconsiders this date. I'd rather see a great IM2 in '11 than an ok IM2 in '10.

I agree, I would have to guess Marvel will need to look else where for the director of Avengers, with both Favreau and Leterrier wanting to direct Avengers and both having potential trilogies in the making, they need to concentrate on their respective franchises and let a different person helm Avengers.
Pushing Avengers back to 2013 or 2014 makes sense, to allow 2 more Iron Man films, Hulk and the rest to get established without losing quality.

Looky at Marvel getting a little greedy.

Fav is running into the tentpole system of Hollywood. Make as many sequels as quickly as possible before people just get absolutely tired of you.(Shrek I'm looking at you).

That doesn't mean it can't be out in 2010.

Thing is though, there's no script or probably official deals in place for everyone yet. Plus the SAG deal has not been made yet.

I think Favreau realizes how lame the Mandarin is. This will have to be a complete overall of the villain if they use him at all, then they really are going to searching for a story to use. He also wants to see how Hancock does in relation to Demon in a Bottle. If Marvel thinks they are just going to hand him a script and say "shoot it", Favs is going to walk.

Thing is, Wolverine isn't a MARVEL STUDIOS film. Nor is Spider-Man.

It's obvious that Marvel Studios is struggling a little bit in getting some of these films on track. They have no films scheduled for 2009. Ant-Man seems to have fallen off the schedule. Thor and Captain America are still a ways off from being ready to film. And there's at least a little uncertainty about how well The Incredible Hulk is going to do and whether the box office will warrant a sequel. And Marvel has a very (too?) aggressive schedule. It really shouldn't be a surprise if that schedule bumps up against creative realities and causes friction.

It wouldn't necessarily surprise me if we see a Runaways movie before some of these bigger names.

If it comes down to that Fav better walk... there is a reason why the steady franchises give it the three year break between every film. They need that time to get everything done. heck I'd consider doing all the big characters by 2011, Cap/Thor/IM2/Hulk 2... and save Avengers for 2014. The script just has to be perfect for that film to work and they need that time in between.

I think in away this is Favreau telling Marvel to slow down. I think all the fans appreciate Marvel wanting to get films out sooner than later, but most will say not at the cost of quality.

Marvel is getting greedy - if they have an iota of common sense they will renew with Jon, and push the film back a year and focus on getting some of their other characters off the ground...

I side with Fav on this; I think IM2 would benefit from an extra year in development. There is no reason to rush it since they are an independent company, and they can change the rules as they go. It is far more important to get IM2 right than to try to adhere to their new schedule, because if it tanks or came out less-than-satisfactory, it will bite Marvel in the ass. And Marvel better sign Favearu quickly, since IM2 needs him at the helm and they can't afford to lose him.

At the very least... If Marvel can't give it another year (keep in mind SM2 was pretty much 2 1/4 years between filming of the 1st one) at the very least make IM 2 a mid July release. I don't think it's a problem since MOS and Spidey 4 seem to be a ways away. At least MOS that is. They should do an Ant-Man film as well before Avengers. Marvel was telling us all along how Ant-Man was getting his own film before Avengers and now he gets shafted like this? Obviously Hulk will need a sequel. And if the guy playing Cap is going filming the solo and Avengers back to back... they should use the same director for both Cap and Avengers. Move Cap to 2012... Avengers 2013. Look sort of like:

Thor June 2010
Iron Man 2 July 2010
SM 4 May 2011 ???
Ant-Man June 2011
Incredible Hulk 2 July 2011
Captain America May 2012
Avengers July 2012/2013 (whenever it's ready)

I'm not blowing any whistles yet since most of these are uncorroborated rumors, and until we get something more concrete, I won't make a decision.

Once Singer was off X-men 3 the writing was on the wall.

Sometimes studios announce release dates too early and they have to push them back.

Originally Sony announced Quantum of Solace for May 2nd 2008, same day as Iron Man before pushing it back to November.

Star Trek was supposed to be out later this year before getting a 6 month delay to summer. Sometimes its because of logistical reasons or what not. Trek it was most likely because of the strike and not being able to fix up the script rather than the given Paramount excuse. I don't see Trek playing well over the summer with the summer moviegoing crowd.

Spider-man 2 was originally announced for May 2004, around the same time as the first one, but it was delayed two months to late June/early July. This is part of the moviemaking deal, a long with negotiations. It's a process.

Everyone said there was no way Pixar was staying with Disney, after the hardnosed negotiation tactics by Michael Eisner. Lo and behold, look what happened.

Singer didn't leave X-men 3 because of less money either. He was re-negotiating and wanted to do Superman Returns. Fox handled the situation RIDICULOUSLY, but Singer still took the WB's enticing offer.

Well Marvel can't get out of a summer release. If they push something back is has to be a year. They can't do Fall or Holidays.

I say to that why not? Holiday season is a great market and time to release movies really.

If Harry Potter can switch between Thanksgiving and summer, why can't comic book super hero movies switch with summer and fall/holiday?

Because of their deal with the financeers. They must release all movies in summer.

I say "scrap all that cross-over BS and make a quality sequel for Iron Man".
