I'm going to come off like an elitist SOB in this post because the subject makes me feel like one.
First off, I don't hate Tennant and 10. I enjoy most of his tenure, but it has some severe set packs that take him down a lot for me. So much so he isn't even in my top 5 Doctors.
I will forever be grateful for RTD and NuWho. It's what got me into this world in the first place. I devoured all 6 seasons in record time. I mean, Doctor Who engaged me like no show of it's kind ever has. It just came along and swept me away. I went through it so fast I was oblivious to some of the flaws.
As I have re-watched 10s run a lot of it rubs me the wrong way, some of it not Tennants fault, to be fair.
For one, the writing. They introduce 10 as a Doctor who won't give second chances. They pretty much say it in those words in The Christmas Invasion. But this is quickly swept aside and 10 becomes the king of second chances. He's so extremely pacifist it hinders his character a great deal. The only time he ever went the distance again was with the Atraxi. And his dealing with the Family Blood was harsh, but other than that he too tree hugging. I'm not saying the Doctor needs to go around Punisher style and wipe every bad guy out, but in the classic era the Doctor was not opposed to offing his enemies if the situation was drastic enough. His inability to do what needed to be done in Journeys End ruined what was a rockling yarn. Also, his mania got out of hand for me too many times. Every single emotion from him is BIG. Big sad, big happy, big anger, big big big. Even his smaller moments are punctuated with over-the-top facial expressions. He's either foaming at the mouth, or putting on a puppy dog look that can belong in one of those sad pet adoption commercials. Again, I don't hate him, I just think he is hit or miss. But when he hits, he can be great.
2. Rose. God, I hate Rose. I hate, hate, HATE Rose. Her fanbase (more on this later) baffles me. She is a selfish, idiotic, bratty, petty little runt. She is tolerable in season 1, but only. She single handily kills a good portion of the second season with her mere presence. In just her first episode, she ditches her BF with a smile for how long neither of them knew, and when she returns after a long absence to find that Mickey has moved on she becomes jealous and hurt. In the second episode she is a straight up B.I.T.C.H. to Cassandra for no reason. Yes, Cassandra was the villain in that episode, but at the time this is not known and Cassandra had done nothing to spurn Rose into insulting her.
She is jealous of every freakin' girl the Doctor talks to and acts like a child, which 10 only encourages like a clown where 9 would shut her down and put her in her place. But her most unforgivable sin is what she does in the Cybermen two-parter. In season 1 she almost single handed, destroys the UNIVERSE because of her inability to listen to the Doctor and not interfere with her fathers death. Let that sink in. She. Almost. Singularly. Caused. The. Universe. To. Be. Destroyed. Ok, I can forgive her the one time, as I like that episode.
But what does she do not all that much later? She STILL TRIES TO RE-CONNECT WITH HER FATHER IN AN ALTERNATE TIMELINE!!!! She even has this big, stupid puppy dog look on her face when she see's him. He's not even really her father in this reality, so why the emotion in the first place? Why, F--KING WHY would she risk anything like what happened before again to try and establish a relationship? How could she be so monumentally ******ed? She also gets everything she wants. She can meddle with time and reality and come away with a new family and a Doctor she bang away until the cows come home. But Donna, a more selfless and honorable human in every regard, gets a raw deal.
3. The fangirls. Yes, I know not all of his fans are the ragging fangirls, but a huge portion of them on the internet are. A lot of the fanbase for the show hinges on the love story with 10 and Rose that the fangirls can project themselves in. I mean, NuWho is the first exposure a lot of younger fans have had, so it's natural some would gravitate toward the romance but on multiple levels I think it's awful. On a pure writing level it just felt juvenile. I didn't buy that 10 was really in love with her no matter how hard the writing wanted him to be. I'm not one of those fans that say the Doctor should never love. I actually really like the relationship he has with River. It's much more intelligent than the Rose crap because River is, for one...on the same LEVEL as the Doctor. I just don't see how he can fall head over heels with this immature earthling.
Fangirls tote 10 and Tennant like is the only face of Doctor Who. You will constantly run into people whinging and whining for Tennant to come back. Back before Capaldi was announced fangirls were wishing Smith would turn back into Tennant. I've seen a few even equate Tom Bakers dialogue about putting on old faces in the 50th as hinting that Tennant will come back. They weren't saying it like they just "wished" it. They actually saw it as hinting Tennant would be back. How they saw it that way I will never know. Not to mention the fangirls ranting that Capaldi was to old and ugly and that they already hated him. Tennant is GONE. He had his run. Get. The. F--k. Over. It. The love affair with 10 runs social networking sites some (not all, to be honest) message boards.
Again, I like Tennant and some this isn't his fault but imo the combination of the inconsistent writing, Tennants penchant for grating on the nerves from time to time and the ridiculous fangirl cult, I can't help but think 10 is highly overrate.
