Comics The 12 dumbest Spider-Man stories (Besides the Clone Saga)

I agree with all of it except Ned Leeds as the Hobgoblin...sort of. I know that Leeds as Hobby made little sense and was poorly executed (a perfect example of editorial turmoil that has destroyed Spidey over the years) I don't think it was as bad as the other stuff on the list. And speaking of "other" where was The Other? I'd swap that with Leeds no doubt.

Spidey's parents returning was the worst for me because Spider-Man was ON FIRE right up around that point (coincidentally, SM's 30th anniversary) and it also led straight into the Clone Saga. Since Spidey's 30th, it has been a very, very turbulent ride to say the least.

Sins Past was friggin ******ed just because MJ knew about Gwen sleeping with Norman and she never told Peter about it (over 20 years of storytelling)??? What a crock of s**t, it still angers me to this day.

The rest (Chapter One, Gathering of the 5, Maximum carnage were flat out terrible creatively.

Bingo! Give that man a cigar!

I've said it before, I always considered the return of Pete's parents Spider-Man's own "jump the shark." I had been reading since '73, but ever since this story (and the 90's), I agree it has not been as fun as before this time.

His parents return (I hated the fact they were made spies in the first place!) was dumb to begin with. It led to the whole I Am the Spider/Peter no more, Maximum Carnage, Clone Saga, Baby May disappears/Aunt May returns, Gathering of the Five, Chapter One, Reboot, MJ blowing up in a plane, Pete/MJ separation, Sins Past, the Other, Pete Unmasking, One More Day.

I couldn't pick up ASM at that point, it was downright horrible. The only thing I read was Spectacular. Actually Spect #200 was the last Spidey book I read for a long time.

I actually liked MJ's plane crash. It re-ignited my interest in Spidey after Byrne had taked a huge dump on him for a year straight.

Reign was a great spider-man story, and while maximum carnage wasn't great, it was fairly entertaining, fun, and actually had a very good premise if it was handled better. Not sure this listing holds up, there are worse stories.

Definitely agree with this list. Although there are many other stories that could be here. Like pretty much everything after Sins Past.

Spider-Man certainly had its share of bad stories over the years. Another bad one is Amazing Spider-Man Annual 5. Peter Parker's parents being secret agents is pretty silly. And that Hypno-Hustler story.

That Spider-Man survived all those stories is a testament to his popularity.

When the day comes that a new editorial team gets rid of Carlie Cooper & puts Peter back with MJ, the fan base will rejoice.

Can't believe One Moment in Time isn't on that list. Otherwise, no big surprise that most of them are from the last twenty years or so

Honestly, One Moment In Time should be number one, Sins Past should be number 2, and One More Day should be number 3.

Still, a pretty decent list. Maximum Carnage was bad, but it was "B Movie" bad. It can be loved without hatred...just not by me.

The problem with maximum carnage was that it could have been really great. The premise is fantastic, it was just executed poorly.

12) I enjoyed Reign
11) Peter's parents are robots, true, but Mary had a heart. Another story I enjoyed
10) A Lizard's Tale is...is...not bad. Totally disagree on Jenkins, I think he's cool
9) Hate Monger story sucks $#%^
8) I think Sins Past has that part weak in continuity, but a good story
7) I actually enjoy Chapter One, don't see the need to make all that fuss over it. Still doesn't beat the classic cause it can't be an equal
6) Love every comic from the 80s, no exception
5) Worst story ever. The first half is decent, second half is all screwed up
4) Looney as it is, it is sort of fun
3) This one is really good, last chapter is weird, but the story is good
2) I like that, but I almost enjoy everything as long as it's Spider-Man centered
1) Tom Defalco's work is great, the rest is alright, nothing all that terrible or all that good

Guys, this is an old article. 'One Moment in Time' wasn't even released yet (jeez, look at the date).

Spider-Aziz, I don't know how you can defend 7), 4), 3) and 2). 'Chapter One' in particular was so terrible. I guess I'm in no position to cast stones though, seeing as I'm an ardent defender of the clone saga (at least the Ben Reilly/Kaine stuff).

Also, where is "Spider-Hulk"?

I stated I enjoy almost everything Spidey centered, so you can see why I defend those
7) is a nice change of the original, not as great, and I hate how Ock looks, but nothing to go "BLARGH" about
3) I enjoyed SM:TAS Man-Spider story, but this one felt like it has a better handle, mutegen is better than mutation going away to return worse
4) & 2) Can't say why, they feel alright with their goofiness
Also, where is "Spider-Hulk"?
It's adorable

Bloody hell, this thread is a year old!

I haven't read that many Spidey stories to form an opinion but I'd probably go with the Clone Saga since it was such maligned when it went on longer than planned.

Actually, the biggest oversight in retrospect was "The Other" wasn't included. That to me was crappier than the Spider-Queen story (which granted was pretty terrible).

The Final Chapter and Gathering of Five on there. Totally deserve it. Those stories were what took me out of Spidey comics for a long time.

Disagree with Reign though. It was no DKR, but still awesome in a time when the current issues sucked.

i really despised life-theft. it was unnecessary, ridiculous, and kind of, i felt, an unfair emotional manipulation. i don't mind peter's parents being spies...back in 1966. in the early 90's, it's silly. while peter's emotional tribulations and his ability to survive them, certainly add to his character, life-theft just felt cheap. and don't forget, life-theft concluded with aunt may still being alive, undoing jmd's beautiful death of aunt may story in asm #400, one of my favorite issues ever. it still bugs me in a way that few other moments in spider-man's history do. i can accept change, even when it's radical, but do it well and with diligence, you know?
