The nominations: UPDATE: Winners
The 22nd Annual Golden Europe Television Awards announced the winners
The big winners were Game of Thrones and The Big Bang Theory who took the awards for Drama Series and Comedy Series.
In the comedy field the suspense on who would win the award was held up until the envelope was opened since by the time the winner was to be announced, few series was at almost tie position. The frontrunner, Modern Family surprisingly won only the award for Ensemble in Comedy. The Comedy Directing award was the big surprise as Californication won the award. The Comedy Writing was won by The Big Bang Theory. But the one comedy series that was looking very strong for the win at the time the envelope was opened was 30 Rock. The series won 4 acting awards.
At the end The Big Bang Theory was awarded as Best Comedy Series, as the show finally won the award after 4 previous nominations. The Big Bang Theory also becomes the first show to win this category with an overall of only two wins for the night.
In the drama field even though Game of Thrones won 9 awards and it was considered the frontrunner, the suspense of who is going to win was held by the end.
Game of Thrones had won 8 awards by the time the best drama series award was announced and yet the series has surprisingly lost the categories for Drama Ensemble, Writing and Directing. The Ensemble and Directing was won by last year winner Boardwalk Empire, and the Drama Writing was won by the former two time champion Breaking Bad.
Boardwalk Empire was on to Game of Thrones to the very end as the show won 5 awards, and it even beat Game of Thrones for all of them. Breaking Bad win was also not out of the question as the show won 3 awards, including Lead Actor, Writing and Editing.
At the end, Game of Thrones was crowned as the winner, but it becomes the first show in over 10 years to won the Drama Series race without winning either, Ensemble, Writing of Directing award.
In the acting race, there were not many surprises. In Comedy, Alec Baldwin won his second award for Comedy Actor for 30 Rock, as his co-star Tina Fey won her first award as Comedy Actress.
In the Supporting races, Neil Patrick Harris won the award for Supporting Comedy Actor for sixth consecutive year for his performance in How I Met Your Mother. Jane Krakowski of 30 Rock won Supporting Comedy Actress when she shocked former winners, Jane Lynch (Glee) and Sofia Vergara (Modern Family), who were considered the favorites.
In the Drama, there were no surprises. Bryan Cranston won his fourth consecutive award for Drama Actor for Breaking Bad, as frontrunner Peter Dinklage won the award for Supporting Drama Actor for Game of Thrones. Claire Danes (Homeland) and Jessica Lange (American Horror Story) won the awards for Drama Actress and Supporting Drama Actress where they were the clear frontrunners.
Overall, Game of Thrones won 9 awards in total, same as Boardwalk Empire last year. After breaking the record for most nominations (21) the show was not as strong in the winnings.
The record for most wins is still held by the first seasons of ER (1994/1995) and Lost (2004/2005), who won 10 awards in their debut seasons.
