I guess we're in "America Ferrera was really good in Barbie" territory now :o
Nah, Galinda Upland is one of the best characters and most coveted roles in musical theater for a goddamned reason. And as someone who's seen close to a dozen actresses admirably attempt to recapture the magic Kristen Chenoweth created with her (including a Broadway icon like Megan Hilty), Ariana not only managed what they didn't without going Full Clown like the majority of them did, but she made it seem effortless. Like I said, earned her flowers. And then some.

Stay mad, Wes Ball's One Fan. :o

I just saw Queer and I got a few more left to watch before I make my list, but since the Oscars have been announced, I wanna do my reasonably alternative Oscar ballot.

Basically redo the Oscars nominations with stuff you think is worthy from last year.

These Oscar reactions to people being nominated are boring.

I want to see the ones who got their whole family/town together and their name wasn’t called like that Spielberg reaction from 1976.

Post that you cowards. Y’all know who you are.
One of the vids that makes me happy every time I think about it.
The addendum to that Spielberg story:

I really wanna see Hard Truths and The Last Showgirl.
Yeah, I've heard nothing but great things about Hard Truths. I was thinking about seeing it last week but then I thought I could save it for next week...
but then I didn't realize Nickel Boys was coming out this week so I'm picking that instead.

I tried seeing Last Showgirl a couple of weeks ago but couldn't get to it in time.

I just hope both show up on streaming soon.

I just rewatched it last night because I guess I'm a masochist, but I was just desperately trying to see what the voters are seeing in it.

Hoping for an American Hustle-style shutout. I honestly haven't disliked an awards contender to this degree in years, which hurts me to say because I've loved Audiard's previous films so much. NO ONE deserves an Oscar for this movie, Zoe included imo. But then, I've always found her to be a pretty flat performer. Her constant screeching in the Avatar flicks has always driven me nuts. In this one, that flatness just extends beyond acting to singing as well. There's not a second of this movie in which I don't see "Zoe Saldaña ACTING!" A-Year-Ago-Me wouldn't believe Current Me is actually saying this, but Ariana Grande 100% deserves that Oscar over her imo. She became her character full-stop.
Ariana should go home with the gold. Zoe has NEVER had it.

Agree to disagree on Zoe Saldana. What did she ever do to you? :o

My personal Best Picture nominees:

Anora
Challengers
Conclave
Dune: Part Two
Flow
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Nosferatu
Sing Sing
The Substance
Wicked

Best Director:

Edward Berger, Conclave
Robert Eggers, Nosferatu
Coralie Fargeat, The Substance
George Miller, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Denis Villeneuve, Dune: Part Two

Best Actress:
Cynthia Erivo, Wicked
Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Hard Truths (no I have not seen this, but I've seen enough to be confident she deserved it!)
Mikey Madison, Anora
Demi Moore, The Substance
Saoirse Ronan, The Outrun

Best Actor:

Adrien Brody, The Brutalist (I'm not a fan, but I get it, and frankly, it's a weak year imo)
Daniel Craig, Queer
Colman Domingo, Sing Sing
Ralph Fiennes, Conclave
Sebastian Stan, The Apprentice (again, weak year)

Best Supporting Actor:

Yura Borisov, Anora
Kieran Culkin, A Real Pain
Chris Hemsworth, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Clarence Maclin, Sing Sing
Guy Pearce, The Brutalist

Best Supporting Actress:

Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Nickel Boys
Danielle Deadwyler, The Piano Lesson
Rebecca Ferguson, Dune: Part Two
Ariana Grande, Wicked
Margaret Qualley, The Substance

I've seen people quick to jump on Romulus being nominated because of the CGI Ian Holm but looking past that, Fede Alvarez really championed practical effects as much as possible in that movie so I'm totally fine with it. It's not like it has a chance in hell against Dune or Apes anyway.

As my younger employee who has educated me on all things ~Ariana Lore~ can attest to, my feelings on Ariana overall are...well, she's messy as hell. :funny: But what can I say, I guess

At the end of the day, she's undeniably talented and absolutely earned her flowers here, and I will shout that from the rooftops!
Yep. I have mixed feelings on her placement in Supporting, but she absolutely gave an excellent performance. I hope she can get the win, because Emilia Perez deserves nothing.

Dammit I have some time before tonight’s debauchery, I’m going to watch Emilia Perez and see what all the hullabaloo is about.

I’ll be back.

They probably campaigned for Grande in Supporting so her and Erivo weren't in competition with each other. But Elphaba is slightly more the main character than Glinda in Wicked so that also likely had a lot to do with it.

You're gonna watch it before the debauchery? I wouldn't recommend watching it sober. :o

That almost always happens when movies have co-leads of the same gender. It very much is Elphaba's story, though, so it doesn't bother me as much as someone like Saldaña, who is maybe the worst case of category fraud since Jamie Foxx in Collateral.

So I finally watched Emilia Perez, and yeah...

200.gif

It was like a telenovela with bad singing and cringe ass choreography. Clearly those producers behind that movie knows where the Academy's bodies are buried because ain't no way.

I didn't even see Wicked and I know if Ariana loses to Zoe, that's some bull.

Kane's pic explains how I felt watching this mess sober. :o

Did anyone like Emilia Perez? I haven't seen it but it seems like every mention of it inspires rage. This makes me wonder why it even got nominated?

My theory is it's misplaced virtue signaling. None of the praise heaped on this seems genuine. I do actually believe that based on the story there could have been a good movie there but the execution was rough. If it wasn't a bad musical it would be more bearable.

Idk I think the story itself is pretty awful and clunky too, tbh. Even without the music I would have hated it. I can’t think of any redeeming qualities here.

I do think you’re right about the misplaced virtue signaling though. That’s the only explanation that makes any sense to me.

Can't comment cause I haven't watched it yet lol. Wife and I were on a Daredevil rewatch, but we gotta watch the BP noms I can watch for free soon

Which is why I believe Stan is in the lead for actor.

I could potentially see that happening as Hollywood's way of sticking it to Trump. Case in point, Stan being nominated for The Apprentice over A Different Man was a surprise. I still think it's going to go to Brody but the acting races don't seem to be entirely clear other than Kieran Culkin being the favorite to win Supporting Actor.
