Nutcrackers

Finally, a fart joke that is important to the plot.

Fun movie. I'm so glad to see David Gordon Green return to his George Washington/Prince Avalanche indie roots after being stuck in studio horror. On paper with this plot, this sounds pretty much like so many Harkmark Christmas movies but it's not. It's far more in the vein of Be Kind and Rewind and Captain Fantastic with Ben Stiller and Linda Cardellini. The kids they got playing the orphaned nephews who are real-life siblings are pretty good in this and I'm sure this is the first time they've acted in anything and I honestly wouldn't be surprised if someone makes a Hanson music biopic in the near future. It was also great seeing Toby Huss, Tim Heidecker, and Edi Patterson and it's funny enough the movie does have some Pete & Pete/King of the Hill vibes to it. While it's got some cliche Christmas movie moments, it's done well enough with an indie style of direction that makes it more bearable to watch. Overall, while it's not super great, I still dug it and I'm glad David Gordon Green is back doing indies again.

I forgot to update this thread but last weekend I rewatched Eight Crazy Nights. It's not good but it's one of my guilty pleasure Sandler movies. That said, I will forever defend this song as an absolute banger that recently experienced resurgence as a TikTok meme:

I also watched Scrooged for the first time ever. The gold standard of any Christmas Carol adaptation for me is the Muppet version of course, but I was still entertained by this. Bill Murray in his peak era, good supporting turns from Alfre Woodard, Karen Allen and Buster Poindexter and Carol Kane as the Ghosts, and some awesome old school makeup effects. Especially on the "Jacob Marley" character.

If someone told me I had until Christmas to find the love of my life or else the magic within in me would disappear forever, I'd be cooked. Thankfully there's not a whole lot of magic there, so I'm not losing much?

I put on the first Home Alone in the background while getting some cleaning done today.

I know it's been meme'd to death, but what do we all think Kevin's dad did for work to be able to afford this house as well as bringing his extended family on a trip to Paris?

Vanessa Hudgens needs to just commit to making Christmas movies every year. They're the backbone of my Christmas watches. This one is just another fuzzy feel good one.

I really can't say anything bad about goofy movies like these. They're ridiculous, but sincere which is charming. What more can you ask for from a Christmas movie? So, sure. Why not make a movie about a political aide trying to shutdown a military base. I give it points for still having the coziness of Christmas despite not having the traditional aesthetic locale.

ugh. not even going to bother finding gifs for these two. Weirdly alike in having absolutely unhinged endings and making me wonder what the heck I was thinking watching them

1. Dear Santa (2024)
Squanders a fun premise on a bland, toothless script. Black's Satan gets up to almost no hijinks this whole movie. He makes a teacher **** himself once and that's really it. What was the point? But it's low-key worth it for the bewildered shock and horror of it turning into Pet Semetary in the last five minutes.

2. Black Christmas (2019)
A total disaster - bland characters, dialogue that reads like it was lifted from a Twitter thread, a wasted Cary Elwes, and some of the worst censorship I've ever seen in a horror movie. I don't even know for sure how half the victims died it cut away so much. And then you get to the climax and... not only does it totally undermine the movie's heavy-handed messaging, it's just a totally insane move for the remake of such a classic slasher. There's no way this was written to be a Black Christmas script, right?

I love when I spot the RT scores for movies like Home Alone and Jingle All the Way. Critics don't understand quality Christmas movies ta all! :argh:

Santa Jaws (2019)

Yeah, it exists. I wont even go into the story which includes a magical pen which makes a shark suddently turning up in this small town with that damn lake. There's some actuallly fun moments, which means comments between the characters, but other than that, ehh..
