This forum wouldn't be complete without a thread dedicated to one of the most delayed, hated and mocked comic book series of all time;

So, May 16th eh....

WooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo! Can't wait!!

Actually, I do plan to buy it. Great art, and bad writing that has plenty of comedic value. $2.99 once a year isn't so bad.

so... til may...

:( I Actually like it, All that crazy stuff...

as I've said before, I love All-Star, and dont get what all the hate is about. It's not in continuity with regular Batman, so just enjoy it for what it is. It's so over the top and obviously tongue in cheek that if you dont get it, I sort of feel sorry for you.

But the thing is, even when I think, "okay, this is a crazy satire" and am fine with the cheesy dialogue and near-offensive characterization, I'm still reminded of how the plot is, well, non-existent through 4 issues, and how the pacing of the story is as slow as Forrest Gump.

In short, no matter how I look at ASB&R, it's just bad. Whether it be serious or satire. Yeah, a book like The Ultimates has some crazy characterizations and some silly dialogue. But it has a fantastically written story, and well-paced, and truly interesting story to go along with it. To fit those crazy characterizations and make them better, and make them work. ASB&R doesn't.

So far, the only minutely redeeming quality is the art. IMO.

there is a plot, albeit a simple one...Batman recruits Robin...that's it, right there, that's a plot. We've known that's what the story was going to be about before the first issue came out, and it hasnt been bad. The only problem I'm having with the book is Jim Lee's rediculous delays.

Okay, how about this. The plot - while there - sucks incredibly. We've been through 4 issues, and little has happened, everything has been set up for some event I can't begin to predict (obviously, there'll be the whole Batman vs. JLA thing, but Black Canary's subplot is still a complete mystery to me).

I mean - to use The Ultimates as an example again - with The Ultimates TONS of stuff had happened in the book by the fourth issue. It was complex, it was exciting, it was interesting, and, most importantly, it was good. And don't come back saying "you just don't like ASB&R because it isn't The Ultimates" - that's not it at all. I'm always up for anything provided it's good. And, as I said in most first post, ASB&R simply is not good, IMO. In any way, shape, or form save for Jim Lee's pretty art.

Hmm.Batman recruits a young child to help him wage his war on crime. That's a plot that sucks???

It's a mystery cuz we're only 1/3 into the story. You're problem is with pacing rather than plot.Big difference.Jim Lee's delays also magnify the pacing by 100, so it seemsway much more slow than it actually is.

Sometimes, less is more. You can't judge something till u see the finished product. And we aint anywhere near there yet.

Lee's art isn't that great. It's just good.He could easilly be replaced with adozen artists who would do just as good as a job.

That's not a plot, that's a premise. A premise we've seen done at least four times already.

I stated that I have a problem with both the plot and the pacing.

Bryan Hitch delayed the hell out of The Ultimates, but I never had a problem with its pacing.

I'm not judging Frank Miller's run on ASB&R, I'm judging Frank Miller's first four issues of ASB&R. And I didn't enjoy those four issues in the slightest.

And, I will add, 99% of the time, if I don't enjoy the first four issues of an arc or run, I won't enjoy it overall. That said, I sure do hope ASB&R ends up being the exception.

You probably shouldn't be arguing to make me like ASB&R less. :o

We've seen it a million times. We've seen it all a million times. It's not the story, but how the story is told.

To each his own.

Issue #4 was a vast improvment on 1 and 2.

Hey it's no skin off my back if you like it any less.:yay:

COudn't I said it better..

Oh sure, I just don't like how Miller's telling the story...for the reasons I've given already.

Yeah, I guess. Still, not all that much happened in it. They arrived at the cave, Batman was a dick to Robin, Superman, and Alfred (satire, I know), and then it was over.

I will say, Issue #1 was probably my least favorite. It seemed oddly...hollow to me. At least, #2 and #3 had some pretty crazy monologues and such.
Hey it's no skin off my back if you like it any less.:yay:
And that's fine with me. I could never want to dislike a comic.

THANK YOU!!! Sweet mother of mercy. I swear to God that me and a couple posters on here were the only ones who seemed to get what Miller and Lee were doing with All Star Batman.

At first I was a little in between after that first issue where the first half of the comic was a half naked Vicki Vale. But, anyhoo....

From the "******ed" comment to Superman being Batman's beotch and Batman making Dick eat rats. It's freakin' GREAT.

And, it's still funny to see this, people are STILL all fired up over the fact that DC was advertising it as a "classic" Batman and they got crazy over the top satirical Batman. You know if I was being uptight about it I'd be pissed too. But see, I would have eventually gotten over it. It's literally going on about two years of *****ing and moaning about a book, that quite honestly isn't really worth all of this attention.

I like it, but it's not classic stuff. But, yeah...it's good to know that there is another person who gets what the hell is going on here instead of being "Oh my god, this Batman isn't acting ANYTHING like Batman". Psssst....it's because this isn't your Batman. It's a different Batman. If I wanted the same carbon copy Batman I'd read...Oh my God...BATMAN! DETECTIVE COMICS! And so on.

But...what in the name of thread making happened to the original thread? Did silenteflute KILL the Leaguer? Because I want to see that? Is it on YouTube?

the idea of silentflute killing anyone in an argument is as non-existant as this book's quality....satire or not...

I will say, if ASB&R's pacing and plot was better, it'd probably be awesomely hilarious.

the pacing would seem quicker if it wasn't bi-annual, i'm sure. That Black Canary crap was a bad idea though.

My only beef about the book is it will never get finished. :csad:

Well, I think the Black Canary thing is supposed to return in issue #6. I read it in the solicit... last May. :(

I've already addressed that issue.

Yeah, the delays make it seem even longer, but so does the (very long) delays to The Ultimates series, and I am still able to enjoy that.

I'm not talking about an arguement. I'm talking about an act of murderous rage here. And, it's obvious, that didn't happen. But hopefully # 5 will actually come out in May and things can SOMEWHAT get back to a normal schedule.

The Ultimates dealys were never nearly as long as ASB&R's have been...it was usually only 3 months or so per issue of Ultimates, 4 max. All Star here comes out twice a damn year...

...ugh. I don't like the plot and pacing and it's not because of the delays. That's it.

I am starting to warm up to the series I just think it could be much, much much, better.
