Avengers was in 3D.
Avengers was bigger than any Spider-man movie.
Even without 3D or inflation.

What are Spider-Man 1, 2 and 3's numbers adjusted with 3D ticket pricing and inflation? Does anyone actually know?

I think its safe to assume that the movie will earn at least $750 million worldwide, unless it was going to make less than its predecessor.I predict that the overall gross will depend on the reception of the first film and whether or not the general audience is hyped enough for this sequel. Maybe for comic-book fans, the new suit or new cast will provide some positive feedback as more hope that this sequel might just live up to the hype. I cannot say for sure though, because the first film wasn't exactly critically acclaimed, but earned positive reviews since this is a rebooted series. I'm just going to quit my rambling and state my box office predictions below.
Opening Weekend: 95M
Domestic: 300M
International: 550M
Worldwide: 850M
Of course the critical reviews of this film will sure to factor in to whether or not the general audience will actually see the movie. Hopefully this sequel will be great, but we can only wait until the first official trailer is released.

Avengers had 4X the superheroes, and 5 years of anticipation. It's not a fair comparison. Compare TA to a JLA movie if it ever happens, that's the only level playing field.
Superman, Batman?
The first Spider-man movie had decades of built up anticipation, not just 5 years.
THIS. Also keep in mind, back then the internet wasn't as big as it was today. People weren't going online to read about the development of the Spider-Man movie. Most people didn't know about the Cameron scriptment and all the legal issues going on with the film rights. When the first trailer hit, maybe around a years before the release, that's when the hype started.This^.
It's not hype unless there's something to be hyped about. It's like people waiting for a Flash movie. People want it, and it'll probably happen one day. But the hype isn't going on right now, it won't start until there's an announcement.
By the way, do we have any idea of the possible budget of TASM 2?
Those inflation numbers are why Raimi's Spider-Man was and still is the biggest superhero trilogy of all time.
The Avengers wouldn't have earned a billion and a half dollars if it weren't for the build up over 5 years.
