GENERAL RAAM with the solid review!

Can't believe the amount of love Elektro is getting from the 5 star folks.

I like the movie, first day pre-order and all that, but praise for the writing, direction, acting, character arc for a cringe worthy villain and just slapping 'perfect' on this movie makes no sense.

CBM movies always have to avoid slipping back into the pre 1999 'silly', 'camp', 'childish' realm and parts of this movie skirted over that line.

Studios are only interested in bottom line and if this movie makes them think junk like Dr Kafka (what? no mustache to twirl?), nerd villain Elektro and 'brave little kid finale' are what the fans want---we'll get a lot more of it.

Like after Star Trek 4 where the studio thought what made it a hit was humor. "Okay, lets have even more humor in Trek 5!"

That's just the way it is with some people. The usual suspects decided long ago that they would absolutely love this movie, and now is the time to uphold that decision...sink or swim.

What's interesting to me in the fallout from this movie's release is how a lot of the things some of the more snobbish fans used to decry have materialized in this franchise.

Comic book accuracy? Look no further than blue Electro, Rhino-mech, MR. Kafka, Gwen not hating Spidey, Gwen knowing that Peter is Spidey, The Lizard killing Capt. Stacy, Gwen working at Oscorp, that awesome costume from the first movie, among so much more. But...web shooters...right?

No more campy, cheesy slapstick? This movie blew the doors right off. Talk about jumping the shark...the laundry list of ridiculous scenes and characters in this movie is just staggering. But...Spidey quips...right?

The funny thing is, among all of these gushing reviews I've seen on here, nobody has dared to address these double standards and outright lies. To quote Jay-Z (as much as I can't stand the guy), "When the grass is cut, the snakes will show", and that's exactly what has happened in this case. I can't even begin to imagine what the next movie will be like, let alone Venom (meh), and especially S6. I dread the thought.

I honestly don't see the BF/B&R comparisons, at all. B&R had batnips, bat credit cards, etc. This had Dr. Kafka and the pre-transformation Electro look. Jim Carrey's Riddler was ridiculous throughout the whole movie, not just as Edward Nigma. Jamie came off like a cliche nerd in the beginning, but once he transformed, he played it as straight as can be. Carrey was basically Ace Ventura with a Riddler costume.

This movie had cheesy moments, but it was no different then say Baron Von Strucker's german accent and eye glass. The difference is the good script causes you not to notice. It seems to me that some of the dialogue from the trailers was better than what we got. Might be why everyone early on was praising the script and now the changes make it one of the flaws of the movie. And honestly, none of the lines were as cringeworthy something like say, "You're the one that's out Gobby, out of your mind!"

"Let's light some candles...it's my birthday"

Itsy Bitsy Spider dubsteb power plant megamix.

He played it as straight as can be alright. Nothing corny about any of that, surely. Along with that hairbrained plan of his to cut the city's power so he could take back his precious design and then...what...exactly?

I love how Captain America: TWS, a relatively serious and well made comic book movie just released a month ago is both successful and well received. Considered by many to be a 'game changer' in the genre.

Then one "hokey" villain in Spider-Man and you're jumping ship claiming the CBM genre is returning to camp.

Dramatic much?

No two hokey villains---kafka was a villain only with no powers and yes those scenes if let run wild will hurt CBMs and lead them back to disdain.

I'm sure the studios will be smart enough not to let that happen, but ASM2 is gonna make a ton of money and who knows what the bean counters will think is the secret of that success---little kids in costumes facing off against super-villains so little kids in the audience will be thrilled.

I started reading comics at age 7 and I would have loved these new CBM movies with or WITHOUT little kids featured in the movie.

I don't mind camp or cheesy moments in a Spider-Man movie. If they are well done, it works. Is just that they went over the top this time, and the motivations of Electro were incredibly stupid. It felt like a kid wrote every line of dialogue for him.

I think Max was just a highly disturbed individual, who longed for attention and respect. If he got it, whether it was from Spidey, Gwen remembering his name, or Harry telling him that he needs him, he instantly bonded. He wanted to be loved, but Time Square feared him. Instead, they cheered for Spider-Man. They were cheering for Max's ex-best friend and not him. This infuriates his already disturbed and broken mindset. I think they needed better execution with him, but I could accept it for what it is.

To be fair, Thomas Kretschmann IS German.

I loved it. It's not a perfect movie, but PERFECT movies are few and far between. It's what I've wanted out of a Spider-man movie. They didn't over-do anything or outsmart themselves. There was a corny moment or two, but it kinda worked.

The people who are just trashing this movie, they weren't going to be satisfied no matter what. Those people are expecting that PERFECT movie — but perfect in their own way.

It was a good movie and I can't wait to see where things go from here.

None of that excuses the abysmal execution. I think we all get why he was the way he was; Electro was far from a complex villain and I'd like to think that the rest of us are intelligent enough to see him for what he is. The movie did him no favors in terms of development and general characterization.

Here's my casual mini-review:

Overall I enjoyed the film, it was pretty good. Unlike others however, I enjoyed the first and second acts much more than the third act. I actually didn't have any problems with Max Dillon or Kafka as much as others seemed to be. Max was pathetically humorous and a little institutional, so his scenes worked for me. I also enjoyed the Blue Danube scene with Kafka as well which really separated the villain's world and Ravencroft from Peter's more super heroic and domestic/civilian life. No problems with tonal shifts for the most part and felt that the tone felt very consistent depending on the character, context and scene. Needless to say, I bought into it. As for the climax, I can't say I was as shocked or blown away as everyone else, but if anything, my heart was beating fairly hard afterwards.

Pros:
- The relationship between Peter, Gwen, Aunt May and Harry were for the most part done extremely well. Probably the best acting and character work in any CBM imo, which at this point in the genre feels very unique. Lots of nice scenes between each of these characters.
- Favorite action sequence was Times Square. Certainly felt Electro's pathos right before he snaps.
- I liked that they decided to focus on Peter's relationships rather than villains...
- Definitely the most definitive version of Spider-man to date.

Cons:
- I thought the whole Roosevelt subplot thing really bogged down the film.
- Also felt like there was a lack of Spider-man in the film as a whole. It was more like 65% Peter and 35% Spidey.
- Underwhelmed by the power plant fight sequence. Electro's cgi really took me out of the scene. I'd say Electro got even less interesting once he finally becomes a villain. Definitely enjoyed Max Dillan much more, aside from the Times Square sequence.
- Goblin's fight was a little bit better, but still wasn't anything spectacular to me.
- A little disappointed with Rhino. He wasn't very memorable and really had little to no presence. I was hoping Giammati would have a memorable presence even with such a minor role.

Luckily, I didn't enjoy Tobey as Spider-man so I would rate ASM2 as the second best Spider-man film. As much as a I like this cast and crew, there's no denying that SM2 is a much better constructed and executed standalone film. Unfortunately, that counts for something in the end.

7/10

We GET IT--we don't like it.

And they updated the monocle to a hands free goggle glass type device so it would be less ridiculous instead of making a character so bad he would fit perfect on the old Batman series.

I understand how his mind worked, don't need to explain to me. But it was poorly, poorly executed, and it didn't have the proper time to explore his damaged mind. Is like they used the first lines they come up with.

I can't believe people are defending Electro.

6.5/7

I'm in awe with Electro, the action, the romance between Pete and Gwen, and how it felt just like a Spidey comic in real life.

Just...it felt like it had the good old Sony re-write feel to it. There was almost too much focus on Harry, and the GG design still sucked.

I will write a full review later.

LOL. Right, we're not challenged---we understand what they were going for.

it was clichéd, poorly executed, reminiscent of one of the worst CBM villains of modern times, unneeded and unworthy of a major actor like Fox.

I've been saying since raimi's first movie if you want multiple villains--have one be in-depth and any others just thugs.

It might be visually exciting to see SM vs Scorpion, Shocker, Electro, Molten Man, etc. but do ALL OF THEM need to be fully fleshed and sympathetic with long origin stories played out in order for us to see that fight?

IMO no.

i give it 7/10 - As a Spidey fan, Great action, cool effects, Amazing Showcase of Spider-Man being spidey from the comics. Loved Dane as Harry Osborn/ The Goblin, Electro was cool and Rhino was a delightful tease for Spidey 3.

However the whole Peter & Gwen story arc was shoved so much down our throats that I felt it took away the whole impact of her Death (Which wasn't a surprise at all).

I wonder---if ASM hadn't bothered to retell the origin---would folks rate it higher?

I know they couldn't retell the Raimi origin exact, but if they had just shown a quick credits slideshow retelling-----Ben/Peter arguing, Spider-man/wrestling, guy gyps Peter, robber let go, robber kills Ben, Peter catches/kills robber---in a minute and skip to his life in high school and aunt May would it have been rated higher/more liked?

I just saw this. Felt that it was the best Spider-Man film I have ever seen. They finally nailed the character. 9/10

I don't have time to do a full review, so all I'll say is that I really enjoyed it and feel that it is on par qualitatively with Raimi's Spider-Man 2, although Alfred Molina's Doc Ock is still the best live-action Spidey villain we've seen to date.

i agree i loved it when he said "In the name of the citizens of New York and real rhinocerus out there, put your paws in the air",classic spidey,i loved the ending don´t know why but after what happened to him he did what Gwen meant "we have to be bigger than we suffer" and that for me is reflected in that scene
