Hell, I could see Whedon needing 20 minutes at the start just to *introduce* the characters.

People keep saying, "oh, but we've already been introduced to these characters in the previous movies." But that's a rather large assumption. Marvel *definitely* wants to attract A LOT more viewers than just the ones who showed up for IM2 (otherwise, this movie will wind up making only IM2-esque numbers, and be considered more of a bomb than Green Lantern ever was), so there's bound to be plenty of noobs in the theater who don't know Loki or Nick Fury or Tony Stark from a hole in the ground. Plus, the gap time on some of these movies will be up to 4 years in the past --- plenty of time for casual viewers to have completely forgotten the pertinent details of, say, IM1 and TIH. (Assuming they even saw them in the first place.)

So, even if it's just retreading old ground for us die-hard know-it-alls, I'm fairly certain that Marvel and Whedon fully intend to do a recap on the four prequels, and get the noobs in the audience up to speed.

I disagree. You underestimate the hype surrounding that movie. The GA is probably almost as excited about that project as we are. I've heard common people on the street and in the subway talking about the trailer. Even though everyone seems puzzled why Batman wasn't seen, they WILL watch that movie next year.

It's only going to get crazier the closer we get to May. :awesome:

How the **** would making IM2 numbers make it a bomb? IM2 made 600+ million. Green Lantern can't even cover it's budget.

Is it wrong that I wish the footage from NYCC's will make its way online this weekend?lol

I was wondering about that myself. Anything under $1 billion WW makes people piss their pants these days.

Indeed.lol I think we were spoiled with having two summer blockbusters this year that had made 1 billion for its box office gross.

I don't think The Avengers would be considered a failure if it only made IM1/IM2 numbers, but I do think it would be seen as a disappointment, given the hype and the movie's team-up nature. I think the movie's going to need to gross at least $700 million to be considered a genuine success by the studio and those who care about box office.

True, and TDK gets thrown into any discussion of CBM box office figures. Fans tend to get terrified about the prospects for sequels based on grosses, and not without reason. The studios don't seem to have such rigid ideas about the threshold of gross receipts necessary to greenlight a sequel, however.

Some here were convinced that CA:TFA wouldn't get a sequel at all, yet Marvel/Disney were pleased with its performance and are going ahead with a second film. Interestingly, CA:TFA made more than X:FC both domestically and internationally, but no one ever doubted that the X-Men reboot would get another go-round. I think that the bottom line is that we don't know exactly what the bottom line is and it could be different based on each studio's plans and financing.

I would think that the studio would want this film (The Avengers) to earn more than any MCU film before it since this is the one where we have all of our heroes coming together, thus and this is just my own opinion of course, if I were to look at it and see the the film were to make roughly the same numbers that IM2 did, I'd say that the film would then be somewhat disappointing, but not a failure.

I'm thinking and believe that the film will AT LEAST be able to reach the 800 million dollar mark for its box office gross.

Damn, the panel is at 6:30 tomorrow and obviously to get in you'll have to be on line for a few hours.

Yet, Chris Evans and Tom Hiddleston are signing autographs at the Marvel Booth on the floor from 4:15 to 5:30. The hell? lol

This.

Face it, GL wasn't a "bomb," either, in terms of actual box office; where it's getting slammed is the fact that it didn't even remotely live up to the hype. The same dilemma faces The Avengers....regardless of actual b.o., if those numbers fail to live up to the *hype,* and it doesn't manage a bigger audience draw than its most popular individidual component (i.e., Iron Man), then the movie will be regarded as a failure and that's all the media outlets and fanboys and failbloggers will be talking about for the rest of 2012.

600m wouldn't be a 'bomb' but anything less than 700m would be a disappointment, no question.

Have someone save your place in line :cwink:

You gotta make choices, mang. That's the downside of these things. Personally, I'd rather see the footage. :)

You'll always be able to see the footage at sometime in the future....you may never get to meet the celebs again.

Haha, what would life be without decisions?
