Well really it was, they didn't show us anything of what Hulk was thinking or feeling other than he cared for Betty. Ang's Hulk went OTT on the character developement, to the point of boring the audience, TIH had next to none and ended up as just an actionfest, I love the film but I didn't see the Hulk I grew up loving, my hopes rest on Joss getting it right.
I liked how TIH did it more than Ang Lee's. I look at it like a toddler learning how to communicate. First just grunts relating emotion, then words that associate with specific objects and then speech.
TIH did the first two, now in Avengers he needs to speak. Doesn't have to be high brow or eloquent, you can leave that for the next movie or TV show, but he needs to communicate in sentences.

. It wouldn't take much to show him as a character either, as Caesar showed in ROTPOTA, you don't even need speech to get the audience invested in them as a character.
