Well really it was, they didn't show us anything of what Hulk was thinking or feeling other than he cared for Betty. Ang's Hulk went OTT on the character developement, to the point of boring the audience, TIH had next to none and ended up as just an actionfest, I love the film but I didn't see the Hulk I grew up loving, my hopes rest on Joss getting it right.

I liked how TIH did it more than Ang Lee's. I look at it like a toddler learning how to communicate. First just grunts relating emotion, then words that associate with specific objects and then speech.

TIH did the first two, now in Avengers he needs to speak. Doesn't have to be high brow or eloquent, you can leave that for the next movie or TV show, but he needs to communicate in sentences.

The funny part is, that is exactly what Ang wanted but like you say TIH did better. I do still feel TIH didn't do it enough, by the cave scene Hulk should've atleast been talking to Betty somewhat, it was the perfect opportunity to showcase the progression.

I used to love the fact that the TV Hulk never spoke, and was sort of on the fence about whether the previous film versions should speak and how much, but now I'm so ready to hear this version communicate with the other team members. Someone made the point that if he had spoken more in TIH, then maybe he would've felt more like a living, breathing character. I agree, because a lot of the CGI sure didn't help.

Any guesses as to how many transformations we'll see in the movie? I'm guessing just two....1st time in the Helicarrier after he and BW crash through the window, and again for the NYC battle. Although I think it would be kinda cool to see Banner, at some point before his 1st transformation, be confronted by someone and have him flash the green eyes ala Rick Moranis in Ghostbusters, then pull it back just to convey the message "Back off, be-yotch. You don't wanna see how far I can take this." :woot:

Also, what does everyone think his 1st word's going to be? I'm going to go out on a limb and say, after that shot we saw in the trailer after he's transformed and starts to look up, he looks at BW and says "run".

Wait. I thought that this hulk in the avengers is going to speak sentences? I thought this was confirmed.

Guys,

its a bit slow around here these past few days, as if some people are slipping away.

Jon doesn't like this!!

I think fans wanted to see him speak more in TIH because they are the ones who still compare the two Hulk films. If you look at TIH as an independent film without any ties to the previous one then the grunting and fragmented speech fit rather well; especially if he does speak in The Avengers, then speaks even better in the next Hulk film/WV series. I'm telling ya, love it or hate it that 2003 Hulk film really screwed up the character in mainstream popularity. I started out disliking TIH when I first saw it, but every repeated viewing makes me like it so much more on technical and story telling levels.

Essentially this is how I feel.

I don't agree with this, it shouldn't be relied upon a sequel to showcase Hulk's intelligence, progression in a sequel yes but both Hulk films had far too little for us to see Hulk as a character, grunting and fragmented speech doesn't cut it, well imo anyway.

Are you sure about that man?? I am almost 100% Ruffalo said the hulk in this movie will have some lines, I am about 90% sure

I think he said he had some lines, supposedly one in particular that would stand out, but not necessarily sentences per se. Also, wasn't there a report where he basically knocks down a bunch of aliens and says "STRIKE"?

EDIT: You just answered your own question.

Some lines. I mean, "some lines" is certainly more than not speaking.

To the non-hulk fans, in mainstream, people would think Hulk is just a monster. I saw the incredible hulk right as I started understanding comics and reading them, I think I definitely would have seen the hulk as just a brute and a monster, thats it. Not a character.

Yep and that's the problem :csad:. It wouldn't take much to show him as a character either, as Caesar showed in ROTPOTA, you don't even need speech to get the audience invested in them as a character.

I agree with both of you, I think the fragmented speech worked well in TIH but I am getting tired of Hulk not speaking in actual sentences.

Its all mainstream media man :(. thats the problem. Its a film, the point of the film isn't to satisfy comic fans, but to make money, and to appeal to all audiences. The Hulk is a big green monster. Thats how generally people see him. It would be a little far fetched to people who don't know him to see a big monster, as a thinking character, you know what I mean? It's almost as if the comic fans take the bullet to accommodate the average people. However, it seems like in The Avengers, Hulk will be a character.

Once again, EMH does it perfectly

Exactly. Exactly Exactly Exactly. I love that Hulk. I love that show. Speaking of Hulk lines, my favorite one, do you guys remember this one?

"You left Hulk in the pool! it froze!!!"

Well as the previous two Hulk films haven't been an overwhelming success, I think even the GA realises treating Hulk as just a big green monster isn't working. Oh well, fingers crossed for Avengers, hopefully being a part of a team will allow Hulk as a character to finally grace the big screen.

Like someone said earlier, A:EMH's portrayal of Hulk would be perfect.
