The Avengers The Avengers Post Screening Review & Discussion Thread (SPOILER FILLED) - Part 3

I don't understand why so many people can't fathom the difference between story logic and real world logic.

Story wise, there is nothing that War Machine brings to the story of the Avengers. Period. Military tactics? Cap's got that covered. A cool armored suit? Iron Man's terrain. A moral guide/grounding chracter for Tony Stark? That's why Pepper is in the movie.

Yes, if this were the real world, he would probably be called. But it makes no story sense to have him there. And the movie is overstuffed with characters already, most of whom are more interesting than War Machine. So why do it?

And I'd argue it's not at all the same as the Black Widow situation. The movie where Black Widow wasn't required story wise was Iron Man 2, not The Avengers.

The thing is, it'll be incredibly easy to explain his absence with a line of dialogue in Iron Man 3. That's likely a conversation Whedon and Black had. It makes a lot more sense than arbitrarily bringing him up here.

I'm sorry and I hope I am not lumped in with the group of people looking to hate this movie but I don't see how this is an arbitrary question. There is another suit of tech out there with someone who knows how to use it. I don't see why a line about why is unavailable couldn't be made in this movie.

Also, at the end of IM2, the War Machine armor got pretty beat up. Most of its artillery was destroyed. Why exactly would Tony want to repair it for the military?

But why do you need that line? Most people will not care about War Machine, period. In a movie, every line of dialogue is precious, and nothing drags a movie down faster than useless expository dialogue. It's usually the first thing to go in the editing room, because it plays dull and lifeless on screen, and audiences are very sophisticated when it comes to filling in the blanks.

If there was a character or story driven reason to explain away War Machine, then maybe it should be there. If it's literally just a logic question, it's completely unneeded in my opinion.

I didn't say the question was arbitrary. But a line of dialogue explaining away a character who isn't involved doesn't really add anything to the film. They already had to do with Jane, since Thor's active search for her was a major lingering plot point.

It would be far more natural to simply have an explanation of Rhodey's whereabouts and/or what happened to his armor in a film where he is a relevant featured player, like Iron Man 3.

War Machine is not there because Fury didn't recruit him, pure and simple. From the stand point of being out gunned (which Fury admits in the film) you would think he'd have been a subject of conversation at the very least.

Honestly it never once popped up in my thoughts. Again, the movie is so good that it's the last of your concerns. Him not being there is neither a necessity nor a detriment. There's just far too much kick azz to even care.

Stan Lee's cameo was missable...I thought it would be the one I read about where he called Steve a moron for not asking the waitress' number

I agree, and in fact I think if Fury tries to come up with a reason on why Rhodey/WM isn't with the Avengers, it would actually make it more awkward, so this is something that is better left unsaid. They need a line to explain Jane's whereabouts due to Thor's ending; they don't need to do it with WM.

Rhodes is a Colonel or Lt.Col
Rogers is a Captain

Explain how a Captain (O-3) can give him orders?

If this was a military operation by default Col. Rhodes would be in command

It would be sorta akyward for this Particular movie

Because he's Captain F'n America. Thats all the stripes he needs on his shield. :o

The movie has disappointed me in this part:csad: There’s no real good brotherly love scene, all my friends were also disappointed."He's Adopted". They grew up like brothers. He thought Loki is his real brother :csad: and then he says such a **** ´I thought Thor is better than that. That's the reason why Loki thinks THOR does not love him . ]

depends on Cap's status...If he is still in the army(which I doubt then yes this is true).

What's the point? Loki has clearly set upon a path of no return. Thor had already tried to show compassion. To no avail of course

exactly. plus, he's knocked out adolf hitler over 200 times. lol

I think Rhodes would take one look at him and LMAO then wipe the floor with him

Not only that
He was enlisted and suddenly made Officer for hollywood without the proper training/credentials
Complete bull to any Officer

It was a joke, after Hill's "He killed 80 people in two days!" line. A joke.

Did you not see the heartfelt scene earlier where Thor asked Loki about them growing up as brothers?

1. Yes, 2 moments like that. See your script notes
2. Hulk is just a pissed off monster angry rage screaming in his face because of circumstances
3. Yes and he invites him to hang out but declined or says "maybe some time later" but not in a gay way
Great! Quick query: what does see your script notes mean?

It was a pretty damned good joke, imo. [blackout]I'd think Loki has certainly earned worse slights than that by now.[/blackout]

it depends of Steve Rogers was an actual Captain or just a title

Captain America earned his commission once he went into active duty and led his troops in battle against Hydra. He has actual boots-on-the-ground combat experience. Besides, Steve Rogers is Captain ****ing America; Rhodey is simply a pilot in a borrowed suit of armor. Much as I like Rhodey, Cap is the Marvel Universe's legendary soldier and commander.

Well if my brother tried to murder me,my friends, commit genocide, as well as threatening my girlfriend I'd want to kill him too. Adopted or otherwise.
