2010 Box Office Stumbles in May

by Brandon Gray

After record-breaking grosses through April, 2010 hit a wall in May, which turned out to be one of the weakest starts to a summer movie season in recent years.
Overall business came in at $905 million, which was down 11 percent from May 2009 and nearly five percent from May 2008. May 2010 ranked as the seventh highest-grossing May on record, following the all-time highest-grossing January, March and April as well as the second-highest February earlier this year.
But May 2010 traffic was even slower than the gross suggested. With an estimated 110 million tickets sold, last month was the least-attended May since 2001, and ticket sales were off 19 percent from May 2009 and nearly as much from May 2008 and 2007. To be fair, though, May 2009 squeezed five complete weekends into the calendar month, giving it a slight advantage over May 2010. However, May 2010 was down nearly 24 percent from May 2004, the last time the dates and days of the week had the same alignment.
Now, not every month is going to be a record breaker nor has to be in order to be bustling or solid, but May 2010's drop-off was so steep and its estimated attendance so far below the norm of the past eight years that it was alarming. The upshot is a reaffirmation that the box office is product-driven for the most part. That's a positive sign: many people rejected or were indifferent to the current crop of movies, and that can be remedied in the future through the production of more compelling fare.
With lackluster movies and marketing campaigns, it was as if Hollywood rested on its laurels and took the audience for granted in May (the recent writers' strike has received some blame for the slate, but that still doesn't explain the poor marketing, and there still were big movies). Iron Man 2 held the most promise from the outset, given how well received the first movie was, but it has behaved like a normal sequel instead of taking off like a Dark Knight or Pirates of the Caribbean. It was by far the top draw of the month with $279.7 million, but it sputtered out rapidly. It didn't fly higher because it didn't up the ante, and the advertising lazily just announced that Iron Man was back with more of the same, instead of actually selling the new movie.
The same criticism can be leveled at Shrek Forever After, which was already at a disadvantage to begin with after the reception to Shrek the Third, and Sex and the City 2, which was also at a disadvantage given how relationship comedy sequels tend to play, while Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time's advertising lacked clarity and pushed the release date before convincing people to see the movie in the first place. Robin Hood took a more consistent approach, coming off as the long-awaited follow-up to Gladiator, and it had the best performance relative to its genre, though it was far from a blockbuster.
May 2010 was essentially a rerun of past Mays: there was Iron Man and Sex and the City from 2008, Shrek from 2007, 2004 and 2001, a historical battle epic (Robin Hood) like in 2005, 2004 and 2000, and a supernatural adventure (Prince of Persia) like in 2008, 2007, etc. Hollywood is mostly about sequels, adaptations, remakes and bandwagons, encouraged by audiences frequently lapping those up, but May's releases rotely repeated things with waning interest or little interest in the first place.
When the movies are so unappealing, grumbles over ticket prices and other moviegoing headaches seem to resonate louder than they normally would. Recent, significant ticket price hikes (especially for 3D) have raised concerns about the movies being too expensive for a lot of people. It's too early to tell if that's an actual epidemic, but the constant upward trajectory of ticket prices hasn't stopped records from falling in the past.
After Iron Man 2, Shrek Forever After was the second-biggest grosser with $146.8 million, followed by Robin Hood with $86.1 million, Sex and the City 2 with $51 million and holdoverA Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) with $46.2 million. Holdovers (movies that opened before May) accounted for 25 percent of May's business, compared to a 16.5 percent share in May 2009.
Through the end of May, 2010 as a whole stood at $4.3 billion. This was still the biggest January-May gross ever ahead of 2009's $4.14 billion through the same point. However, attendance was down more than five percent.Avatar remains the top-grossing picture of the calendar year with $465.4 million, followed byAlice in Wonderland (2010) with $333.2 million and Iron Man 2.

i dont find this shocking at all...

this summer SUCKS for big blockbusters... all we have is IronMan2 and The Last Airbender

every other movie is not hype-able...lol

Inception will only be big with the hardcore Nolan fan boys. I can't see it having too much mass market appeal.

Yeah you are definitely wrong with the Inception only for nolan fans, thats actually a really stupid statement, I know alot of people who didnt like or havent see any Nolan films before are excited to see Inception. Also are you people forgetting a little indie film called Toy Story 3 which is going to be the biggest movie of the year easily.

Inception is definitely only big with Nolan fanboys. I bet 90% of the audience thinks it's something like the Matrix.

yeah not alot of people went to see the prestige so Inception will be good just won't have good numbers

2011 will be massive thou, look at all the movies that are putting out

atleast Iron Man 2 was fun, F Shrek, I love Toy Story so I think 3 will be good, ummm A-team may deliver, No really big HAngover comedys, Predators seems like a good squeal on paper, prince of Persia is no pirates, twilight will always suck (true blood is better)Sex and the City 2 is for losers, karate kid seems like a kids movie, johan hex seems like ghost rider 2,cats and dogs 2? really???

so yeah Summer of 2010 was probably one of the worst blockbuster summers in years but 2011 will be massive

Did people also say that Avatar would only appeal to hardcore Sci-fi geeks? Heh.

Exactly. Not to mention the positive buzz behind Inception is much bigger than any other summer release, other than Toy Story 3 and maybe Last Airbender.

It is a lackluster summer for movies. There really isnt anything big out there for the general movie going audience to get excited about. I can see Toy Story 3 doing well, those are good, fun, well done movies. Plus, with the economy still being in the crapper, alot of folks cant afford to take their families to the movies every weekend. Time for people to stay outdoors and enjoy the simple things and leave Hollywood to rethink their movie making for this summer. lol

INCEPTION has been touted as THE MATRIX meets 007 "on steroids!" and quite frankly if it does live up to expectations (allowing good to great WOM) I really don't see it underperforming.

IMO the partial reason why the summer blockbusters have been dissapointing commercially so far this year is that quality wise they've all been to some degree dissapointing movies. IM2 hasn't been as critically well accepted as IM1, SATC2 has been subject to even worser reviews than the first movie got, ROBIN HOOD, despite it's pedigree, has been picked apart from many corners (the main one being that it's too grim for a Robin Hood film)etc.

The Prestidge was between Batman Begins and the Dark Knight, plus it was released in the fall. Inception is post-Dark Knight, so Nolan is a bigger name and being promoted as a summer blockbuster.

For comedies, movies like the Hangover are never seen coming until they hit, there probably will be a comedy like the Hangover this summer we just aren't sure what it'll be yet. Predators won't be big outside of the fanboys. Twilight will be big, it's not my cup of tea, but teen girls will be lining up around the block for it. Plus there'll be one or two surprise hits like District 9 last year. Also with the male crowd there's the Expendables, which could be big since it's got 3-4 generations worth of action stars. Personally I'm really only looking forward to the A-Team and Toy Story 3 right now, but I'm sure there'll be some others that come out of nowhere I'll want to see.

so yeah Summer of 2010 was probably one of the worst blockbuster summers in years but 2011 will be massive

Everyone always says this, next year will be better. What do we know about next year? Sure the Thor, Captain America and Green Lantern, what else? Harry Potter? With Yates still in charge the film will be butchered.

pffffffff, you think people care whos directing harry potter? That ****s gonna make big bucks plus its gonna be epic as ****.

People seem to be forgetting that Toy Story 3 is coming out in a few weeks. If it's as good as the trailers lead us to believe, it will be the biggest movie of the summer until the next Twilight move comes out, because a lot of teen girls will swoon to see who has the most glitter between the shirtless wolves led by Taylor Lautner and the effeminate vampires led by Robert Pattinson.

I still love how people whine about Yates when the man has to make a 2 hour movie from a 700-800 page book when they hold Prisoner of Azkaban to be one of the better movies but they don't seem to realize that book was half as many pages. I wonder which movie will be more faithful to the source??? HMMMMMMMMMM. Be happy we get two movies and Yates was part of that decision.

Deathly Hallows 2 will help make 2011 an epic summer.

Every single year. I think we should all just realise that its common for the summer to suck balls when it comes to movies.

People are forgetting The A-Team, Toy Story 3, Eclipse, Predators, and Inception that will most likely generate big numbers. I can honestly say and believe that Eclipse will possibly be the biggest film of the Summer.

And you can't really mention the economy. When the economy is doing poorly people tend to go to the movies as a form of an escape.

You must be out'cho mind Bill. Its like if I said Scream 4 will bomb at the box office

(which it will)
:hehe::hehe:

word up, DH2 is the conclusion to one of the most longest running successful series in hollywood. It's defintiely gonna get attention

I think Toy Story 3 will come out on top.
Inception and Eclipse will battle for second place.

But yeah disappointing summer. So many lame movies. Toy Story 3 and Inception seem to be the only good mainstream films coming out this summer.

Yeah iron man 2 was truly dissapointing.

I agree, 2010 has been laaame. The worst since 2001 (can you name a summer movie from 2001? Exactly). Clash of the Titans was wofeul. A half-assed Robin Hood that barely qualifies under that title. The Losers, a B-list A-Team. Prince of Persia (which looks fun, absolutely, but would be way down the list of to-see movies any other summer). The A-Team, which looks like a cartoon. Jonah Hex, for goodness' sake, which is the most obvious flop-to-be I have ever seen. The Last Airbender, also to be a flop. Knight and Day, which looks amusing at best. Predators, which would have been cool back in 1993. The Sorcerer's Apprentice....another, "Why on earth did they make that?" entry. The Expendibles, one last hurrah for action heroes of TWO DECADES AGO. Resident Evil 4. FOUR!!

2011 (Green Lantern vs Captain America vs Thor vs X-Men vs Pirates IV vs Transformers 3) and 2012 (Spider-Man vs Batman vs Avengers) are loaded with big hitters, so the best is yet to come.

I am not holding my breath for X-Men or Spider-Man.

Wow, its hardly began and people are pissing and moaning.

That didn't take long did it? Just like how people where whining from the first two months of this year.

And its none of you people are ever happy with anything and its hardly began.
