Who knew, here in Canada they actually give out an award to the Best Comic Book Shop. The award is called the Harry Kremer Award for outstanding Canadian comic-book retailer.

I discovered this by reading a June 2007 issue of Readers Digest. According to RD the winner of the 2006 Harry Kremer Award was Halifax's "Strange Adventures". They even have an issue of Amazing Fantasy #15 "valued at several thousand dollars". :spidey:

Do you have a favourite comic book store? What makes it special to you?

Midtown Comics in Manhattan. Only been once but it's like the Mecca of comic book stores

There's a comic book store in Georgetown(MD/DC area) that's really cool too. It's long and narrow

My favorite store is G2K in the Virginia area. They're some cool people there and it's close by. Who could complain!

Spoons do you mean Midtown Comics in NY?

The Silver Snail.

Bar none.
Especially coming to it after living where I used to live, it was like Nerd-vana.

And they have a second store now :)

Amen, I'm glad we visited both of those

Fables comics in Southington Connecticut.Great staff and free comic bags and backer boards

Personally, I dig Graham Crackers Comics here in Chicago. The people working their are very friendly and cool. And they have a great selection of everything comic related.

DJ's Universal in Studio City. I like it the best because that's where I work

I definitely came here to post that. Though, some of the kids that work in there these days are lacking the comic book knowledge. I like my comic book store employees super nerdy and knowing everything there is to know, a thank you.

On the plus side, it's one of the few comic book stores I can go into as a female and not get gawked at since the Snail is a bit of a tourist draw/queen west establishment.

I would also highly recomend the Hairy Tarantula. There are also a few good stores on Younge street north of College.

Thanks. I'm new here and don't know many of the stores, but what amazed me was how I could bring female friends into it and it was totally chill and like... hip. It was just a cool atmosphere I guess.

As for the lack of comic book knowledge, it's surprising, because I haven't regularly read comics since I was 13 and I feel like I have more comprehensive knowledge of that whole world than a lot of the employees. But thems the breaks.

comics Revolution in Chicago. Probably the cleanest comic store ever. They have every tpb and hardcover known to man(even out of print ones) and the comics on their stands go back about 10-12 issues if you're a newcomer and want to catch up, or if you missed an issue or two. Also, if you are a regular, they have an awesome buy two, get one free deal.

If you live in Detroit the best is Green Brain Comics in Dearborn (a suburb of Detroit). They have EVERY comic you need.

They've cut down on their action figure/statue collection, you can get them via order at a HUGE discount. But if you're looking for Statues and figures, Lee's comics in Allen Park is HUGE. But for comics, nothing beats Green Brain in the Detroit area.

I live in TO now, so the Silver Snail is a necessary evil.

But the best comic store in the country, although I haven't been there for about a decade, is Warp One comics in Edmonton, Alberta. It's a treasure hunt in there, I felt like a 8-year old again.

In Vancouver, it's Taz Comics in Burnaby and Big Pete's in North Vancouver.

I think a lot of people see it as a really hip cool place, so that's why they want to work there, not necessarily because they're huge comics fans. That said there are a couple of the older guys who do really know thier stuff. I just don't see them around too much anymore.

I though of another good Toronto place while I was in class. Labyrinth, at Bloor and Walmer in the Annex, and BMW across the street. Labyrinth has tons of TPB's (though not many single issues) and they price them all at US cover price. They also have a TPB club where you buy 10 and get one free. Plus they sell art and lots of anime stuff if that's your cup of tea.

BMW isn't a comic bookstore persay, but it has a great graphic novel section and the basement is full of single issues. I picked up the Dark Phoenix Saga for like $4 there.

Minotaur and Pulpfiction Comics are my favourite. Minotaur is huge with and covers pretty much everything including a crap load of figures, toys, and other collectables. Pulpfiction on the other hand is much smaller, but the peeps there know their stuff and they have a cozy lounge for people to chill out and read. I especially love their customer service, they know who I am and what I like so they quite often ring me or shoot me an email if something that may interest me has come in. Plus they give me discounts ;)

I usually go to bulletproof comics in brooklyn when I cant make it to the city, so its usually midtown comics for me when it comes down to it. But silverage comics isnt bad in queens
