I have to admit I'm a major fan of both versions. They both bring some great stuff to the table.
What I liked the most about both of them compared to all the previous incarnations from the 70s and 50s is these were the first to actually make the story somewhat realistic and make the protagonist wounded and flawed.
They removed the cartoony aspects of the character and thus these 2 versions will always be considered my favorites.
Try to put any biases aside and lets look at the popular positive choices that both franchaises brought to the table:
Michael Rosenbaum: He seems to be a very popular and well liked choice amongst the Superman community for Lex Luthor and his portrayal is one of the best. Even those who dislike the series, have praised his brilliant portrayal and liked him. The vast majority of the \S/ fans definatly like him.
Brandon Routh: He seems to be another popular choice among the vast majority from what Ive read, reviews and the polls on various sites Ive seen. Even among alot of fans who dislike the film, they praise Brandon's performance and say he was probably the best thing about the film (as Rosenbaum is often regarded as the best thing about Smallville).
Erica Durance: Probably the best portrayal of the modern day Lois Lane. She gets it right personality-wise where other versions didnt.
Sam Huntington: His Jimmy Olsen was perfect and hilarious. He hit it right on the mark perfectly. I think the Smallville version should be somewhat similar personality-wise.
Both franchaises have positives and negatives but the good and potential for even better definately outweighs the bad.
I believe both franchaises present us with some great stuff and both can learn things from each other.
