Alright it took a few years, but we are FINALLY getting a new animated X-men series. This is the first time the X-men have been animated since the series finale of X-men Evolution . . . not counting videogames.
The last two X-men shows were big achievements in the world of animation. Very rarely do action adventure cartoon shows run longer than a season or two. The first X-men series ran for several seasons and over 75 episodes. And X-men Evolution ran for four seasons with 52 episodes.
For this show, one of the writers is Greg Johnson. Johnson's experience with Marvel animated shows goes back to the 1990's with the Incredible Hulk and Iron Man. Besides that he wrote on the best transformers series ever, BEAST WARS, and was the writer of all the Marvel animated directed to DVD movies thus far: Ultimate Avengers I and II, Iron Man, and Dr. Strange. He was a writer on X-men Evolution as well.
Another staff member from X-men Evolution is director, Steve Gordon, another veteran of the animation world.
But what has me more excited about the show than anything else is the cast. For the last two X-men shows, a lot of the actors for the characters were Canada based. A lot of them did a good job, especially Cal Dodd as Wolverine in the 1990's series. But it was a bit odd at times when all the X-men were sounding like Canucks.
In some of the most perfect, inspired casting ever you have one of the biggest power houses in the voice over industry period as Wolverine, Steven Blum. Blum is most famously known as Spike Spiegel, but is a veteran of hundreds of other animated shows. To show his versatility, he currently plays Orochimaru, the main villain on Naruto. Blum debuted as the voice of Wolverine with the X-men Legends video game. Following that he also played Wolverine in X-men Legends II and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. Wolverine and The X-men is the first time Blum plays Wolverine in an animated series. Blum has also been the voice of 7/11, and was the first voice actor to potray Final Fantasy's Vincent Valentine in English. It's more than likely impossible for you to watch TV, listening to the radio, or playing a video game without hearing Blum's work. Blum is also an experienced musician and writer for animation.
Yuri Lowenthal is another veteran of animation. He's playing Bobby Drake/Iceman. Also probably one of the nicest guys you will ever meet at any type of convention. Lowenthal earns superhero stripes for most recently playing Superman on Legion of Super Heroes.
Liam O'Brien is the voice of Angel and Nightcrawler. O'Brien has worked not just as a actor in animation and video games, but a director as well.
The rest of the cast is also similarly excellent, especially Kari Wahlgren as Emma Frost.
So for Wolverine and The X-men it looks like Marvel opts for an LA based cast over a Canadian/Ocean Group type. But it certainly has potential to be the best cast to date for an X-men cartoon.
