Alright it took a few years, but we are FINALLY getting a new animated X-men series. This is the first time the X-men have been animated since the series finale of X-men Evolution . . . not counting videogames.

The last two X-men shows were big achievements in the world of animation. Very rarely do action adventure cartoon shows run longer than a season or two. The first X-men series ran for several seasons and over 75 episodes. And X-men Evolution ran for four seasons with 52 episodes.

For this show, one of the writers is Greg Johnson. Johnson's experience with Marvel animated shows goes back to the 1990's with the Incredible Hulk and Iron Man. Besides that he wrote on the best transformers series ever, BEAST WARS, and was the writer of all the Marvel animated directed to DVD movies thus far: Ultimate Avengers I and II, Iron Man, and Dr. Strange. He was a writer on X-men Evolution as well.

Another staff member from X-men Evolution is director, Steve Gordon, another veteran of the animation world.

But what has me more excited about the show than anything else is the cast. For the last two X-men shows, a lot of the actors for the characters were Canada based. A lot of them did a good job, especially Cal Dodd as Wolverine in the 1990's series. But it was a bit odd at times when all the X-men were sounding like Canucks.

In some of the most perfect, inspired casting ever you have one of the biggest power houses in the voice over industry period as Wolverine, Steven Blum. Blum is most famously known as Spike Spiegel, but is a veteran of hundreds of other animated shows. To show his versatility, he currently plays Orochimaru, the main villain on Naruto. Blum debuted as the voice of Wolverine with the X-men Legends video game. Following that he also played Wolverine in X-men Legends II and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. Wolverine and The X-men is the first time Blum plays Wolverine in an animated series. Blum has also been the voice of 7/11, and was the first voice actor to potray Final Fantasy's Vincent Valentine in English. It's more than likely impossible for you to watch TV, listening to the radio, or playing a video game without hearing Blum's work. Blum is also an experienced musician and writer for animation.

Yuri Lowenthal is another veteran of animation. He's playing Bobby Drake/Iceman. Also probably one of the nicest guys you will ever meet at any type of convention. Lowenthal earns superhero stripes for most recently playing Superman on Legion of Super Heroes.

Liam O'Brien is the voice of Angel and Nightcrawler. O'Brien has worked not just as a actor in animation and video games, but a director as well.

The rest of the cast is also similarly excellent, especially Kari Wahlgren as Emma Frost.

So for Wolverine and The X-men it looks like Marvel opts for an LA based cast over a Canadian/Ocean Group type. But it certainly has potential to be the best cast to date for an X-men cartoon.

Great post.

I'm not a fan of the 90's voice cast, and have been very vocal about that. Evolution was a vast improvement for me, minus a few duds (Nightcrawler). This cast seems pretty perfect thus far. But who knows, we haven't heard every character yet.

Steven Blum is great. I mean, the dudes T.O.M. for goodness sake.

Yeah definitely. I agree with you on Nightcrawler from EVO and his very forced German accent along with all his hip talk. I think O'Brien is going to play a much stronger, mature Nightcrawler.

Also here's a list of all the voice actors for Wolverine (English):

-Neil Ross, Pryde of The X-men . . . say G'day to Australian Wolverine.

-Cal Dodd, X-men: TAS and the Marvel/Capcom games . . . believed by many to be the definitive voice of Wolverine in animation.

-Scott McNeil, X-men: Evolution . . . "Recycle that for me, will ya bub," GREEN-FRIENDLY WOLVERINE!

-Mark Hammill, X2: Wolverine's Revenge . . . surprisingly good.

-Steven Blum, X-men Legends series, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, and Wolverine and The X-men . . . current voice of Wolverine in animation and video games.

I might've missed a few. Apparently Wolverine made an appearance in Spider-man and His Amazing Friends but did not speak.

I think Scott is my favorite.

O'Brien has worked not just as a director in animation and video games, but a director as well.
^LOL

Evolution was a vast improvement for me, minus a few duds (Nightcrawler).
Tell that to his legions of fangirls.

For me, 90's Nightcrawler > Evo Nightcrawler. I think the 90's show had the perfect version of Nightcrawler. And that was essentially the version Singer used in the movie.

I don't watch or care about anime nor do I play anything outside of sports video games, so much of their voicework credentials is lost on me. Blum does have a good voice for wolverine. I didnt check everyone's background, so if the rest of the cast has done decent work in live films, cool, but that doesnt really apply. Ill hold my judgment till I watch the show. I thought evolution didn't suck, but I didn't think it was all that great.

I'm starting to like Spectacular Spider-man quite a bit and I didn't think I would. So well see how history reflects this new X-men show.

Blum has done tons of voice work outside of anime and so has much of the other cast. IE he was Jamie on Megas XLR.

Megas XLR = one of the best shows ever.

Yup, definitely underrated show that went away far too quickly.

Voice for voice the 90's show was probably my favorite so far for an X-men show. And it makes sense that the show would end up having such a heavy influence on Bryan Singer before he made the movies.

I just think so far the cast assembled for the X-men in this show is better :D .

Yes, but can Blum do a Canadian accent? :oldrazz:

I noticed that a lot of the VAs are anime regs (this first time I have heard of Liam O'Brien doing pre-lay work.) Good for them, pre-lay pays more and its good for your career if you do some of it.

I hope the series has a blend between anime VAs and non-anime VAs (for example, I heard Tom Kane was doing the voice of Magneto, though I'm not sure that has been confirmed.)

By pre-lay you mean voice over before the animation is done?

Blum's done Wolverine before in several video games. You can hear his voice for this show by searching for the trailer on YouTube.

That's what pre-lay is. I just find it interesting that this is the first time Liam O,brien has done pre-lay. I think it has to do with the fact marvel put Studiopolis in charge the voice casting and they have done a lot of anime before. I hope the voice cast has a nice balance between anime and non anime voice actors from LA.

I was joking about the canadian accent thing. I have heard his Wolvie voice before.

Anyway is there any LA voices you want for characters who aren't yet confirmed (like apocalypse, Sinsiter.etc)?

Mark Hammill as Arcade.

Crispin Freeman as Cannonball

Alan Cumming as Juggernaut

Tom Kenny as Deadpool

Clancy Brown as Mr. Sinister

Mary Elizabeth McGlynn as Psylocke

David Hayter as Captain America

Phil LaMarr as Bishop

Johnny Yong Bosch as Spider-man/Peter Parker

Quinton Flynn as The Human Torch

Daran Norris as Apocalypse

Richard Epcar as The Punisher

I kind of wish Blum wasn't in this. He's nice and all but he's been in every damn thing lately so I'm seriously tired of hearing his voice.

Not bad, but i don't think this cartoon has the rights to non X characters.

Eh based on what? The show is being produced by Marvel Studios and First Serv Toonz. So if Cap can appear on X-men Evolution, Ultimate Avengers, etc. why can't he be on this show?

The voice over business is a lot smaller, niche, and hard to get into. So its mostly the same people doing everything.

.

Based on the fact Kingpin can't appear on the Spidey cartoon because Fox has the rights to him.

With Spidey cartoon in production he won't be able to be on this show.

Marvel owns the rights to the characters in their comics, but when it comes to media rights, the characters are owned by a bunch of different companies.

Spidey, at least, is unrealistic, maybe cap is, but don't bet on it.

That doesn't make any sense considering the Daredevil movie version of Kingpin played by MICHAEL CLARKE DUNCAN appeared on the MTV Spider-man series.

I think its stupid to limit the potential of these shows in this way. They should be cutting deals so they could be used.

OK but clearly 20th Century Fox has nothing to do with this series. These shows are not associated to the movie-verses at all.

You had cap in both 90's X-men and X-men Evolution. You shouldn't break the tradition again.

Weren't both Spider-Man and the X-Men featured in each other's earlier series???

That was 5 years ago, clearly things have changed and Fox doesn't want to give the media rights to the Kingpin character.

What you think is irrelevant, its what copy right lawyers think that matters. Marvel has no control over the media rights once they give them away, why should sony allow the rights to Spidey to appear else where, what's in it for them. Marvel doesn't want their piece of the pie to shrink by paying Sony for character who would appear in maybe one episode.

Irrelevant, Sony has the cartoon rights to Spider-Man, they determine which cartoons he appears in, not Marvel.

Again these have changed since then, now that super heroes have become huge property, the companies that own jealously protect those copy rights.

That tradition is irrelevant, no matter how much you wish otherwise, those days are gone.
