Horror The Black Phone

Gave this one an 8/10. Really good acting by the kids and Ethan Hawke was creepy and disturbing as all hell. Not as scary as I wanted it to be, but disturbing enough. Derrickson is one of my favorite horror directors at the moment, the guy knows his stuff!

This is coming to VOD on Friday!

Yep heard about this yesterday. Awesome news can’t wait to check it out since I mostly try and wait now for home releases. Wish they’d still do the same day streaming as I personally prefer the home viewing. Can’t be bothered going to theaters at all anymore.

Really enjoyed this. I used to say Ethan Hawke is underrated, but now he's just great IMO. The kid actors are very good as well, e.g the bond beteween the protagonist and his little sister felt very natural and often very touching. It took me a while to figure out why the dad (Jeremy Davies) felt so annoyingly familiar, then I realised he had a recurring role in Lost, and he gave a great performance here as well.

This felt maybe more like a mystery thriller than a pure horror flick most of times, but that's fine by me. Also loved the circa late 70s setting, I'm ancient enough to be around that age back then (Happy Days and Emergency were nice 70s TV-show easter eggs, pure nostalgia). Nice use of On The Run by Pink Floyd close to the finale as well.

It took me a minute to remember the father also. I think I figured it out after about maybe 10 minutes. I thought the little sister was the showstopper, but everybody was really good. I loved her “conversation“ with the police. That one had me rolling.

Speaking of Jeremy Davies, Lost was one of those shows where every actor who was in it will probably be forever etched in my memory, just because of how that show affected me when it was on the air. And Jeremy Davies' character was one of those who had an especially memorable recurring role in it too.

Yeah, the little sister was totally awesome. Her sometimes asking Jesus for advice and her "language" with the cops were highlights. Such a huge amount of swear words from that little mouth lol. Also that heart breaking moment when she went in to that fight trying to defend her brother.
I can't be the only one who shouted NOO when we realised that the mini Bruce Lee kid were about to be abducted? One, a bad ass character is gone. Two, the protagonist whitout that protection is gonna get his ass so whopped now lol.
I had to go to IMdB and search for Jeremy Davies. When scrolling down on all his projects (which gave me nothing) I suddenly noticed Lost, and went aaah, that brilliant totally forgotten character and now I want more of him.

I’m terrible with names but really good with faces. When I first saw him I kept thinking Pippen? or Merry?…..nah….and then it hit me. Lost.

2/5

Not very good. Predictable. Stupid kid who can’t break a plate that’s left behind to slice and dice Ethan? Can’t stack up the carpets to get up to a window? Can’t hide properly the first time he escapes? The only smart thing he does the entire movie is near the end but he needed dumb looking ghosts to help him get the job done :funny: (which btw was pretty lame). The sister is a good actress. Her “gifts” were convenient but it worked for a while....the only thing is with that kind of info, the cops should have figured this all out halfway through the movie.

Ethan Hawke was average. Never been wowed by this guy on screen. He was also miscast in The Northman this year.

He’s what I call an over-actor. Always doing too much.

Meh I didn’t find him creepy at all. Just pathetic and silly.

Ethan Hawke was fantastic, and the atmosphere evoked John Carpenters Halloween, but unfortunately, despite starting out strong, it ended up losing me in the second half.
The dead kids talking and the dreams stuff came out of nowhere. If this had been a straight forward story about the grabber, it could've been a modern classic. It ended up feeling corny towards the end and never reached it's potential, which is a shame.

It's unfortunate that both Black Phone and X failed to live up to expectations for me. I just don't see what the big deal is about both.

Cargill makes it sound like the idea came from Joe Hill, too. I’m intrigued.
