The Brave and the Bold News and Discussion Thread

Flash was fine, with some sparks of real creativity which were bogged down with a lot of visual sound & fury. If this is roughly the same quality, then that’s not terrible for a Batman sub-franchise. Hopefully Gunn helps reign back some of Muschietti’s worst tendencies.
I mean, it is terrible if the idea is they want to make money and have a succesful movie, for starters.

No writer attached so the Muschiettis may write the script themselves.
Seeing how the only credit they have is the god-awful Mamá, I hope not.
Anyway I doubt it because ever since then they've never written their own ****.

This is really bad news to me. The Flash visually and tonally lacks so much in the costume/production design departments, as well as the cinematography. Just so many tacky directorial choices.

You need a really strong director because this will inevitably be compared to Reeves' films. And there's no denying that Reeves' strong directorial hand is felt in every frame of The Batman.

This is not promising at all.

We will see, a lot of the Flash is him having to work in tight constraints here and there.
Lot of changes etc on a constant base, a script having to build the fall of the DCEU and start of DCU etc.
I could see him do better with less constraints and more freedom.

The Hive Mind will probably go: Noooooooo, The DCU is dead before it began etc.

Until i see more in terms of the DCU, get a clear idea of its visuals and all...i stay open minded on this.
Not my first choice to begin with, but who knows.

Muschietti doesn’t work well with scale. I like Mama and the first It quite a bit because they’re nice, simple, contained films - It: Chapter Two and The Flash are complete ****ing messes, the former is way worse than the latter but both exhibit similar failings.

One assumes this will be a big, loud, sprawling Thing with the Al Ghuls and the League of Assassins so it’s very easy to see how that’ll play out.

I’ll give him a go. It chapter 1 is amazing and anyway there’s like twenty Batman films being made at the moment so even if it’s not good something else will come along soon

It'll be the first Batman film in about 30 years to tank with Muschietti at the helm.
He's been on somewhat of a downwards trajectory since the first IT, financially and otherwise. No reason to think it'll stop now. The man couldn't even make the return of Keaton's Batman into something people gave a **** about and now he's supposed to make a whole new Batman from the ground-up?

If this does come to pass it'll be absolutely hilarious how the "dark and grounded and not 4 quadrant" Joker 2 and The Batman Part 2 absolutely obliterate this film at the box office which I can just tell he's probably gonna try to lean into "family friendly and fun and big and epic", checking boxes in the most generic and at the same time convoluted manner possible.

He really should stick to mid-budget movies because I really can't imagine this will do any good to his career either. He's pretty much setting himself up for failure, especially since he's inevitably gonna be compared to Reeves and Nolan. Everything that this film will probably be/needs to be does not lean into any of his strengths as a director at all.

He's not of Chinese or Arab descent, as far as I know, but, a potential new Robin could be the most recent Peter Pan , 16 year old Alexander Molony

Perfect casting. How old will he be in 2026 though?

If The Flash bombs, there's no way they are actually going to give the crown jewel of DC over to the man who directed it. Especially when over there you have another guy making Batman movies of a high calibre.

I fully expect Muschietti to be shuffled off the project at some point.

I was hoping that after the Flash, the new DCU would eventually unite the fan base. Obviously my wish is not going to come true as the new Batman director is already getting panned. Can’t wait to the cast the new Batman.

James Gunn is getting panned. Everyone gets panned.

God, Joker was supposed to be the worse thing ever when it was announced. “Who asked for this?”. Same said of Peacemaker. All people do is whinge, whinge, whinge. Nolan could be doing it and people would still whinge.

This is so needlessly negative. The director of The Hangover made Joker. Let’s not forget that The Flash was a studio job, with constant rewrites, largely written before Muschietti even boarded it and then chopped, changed and delayed a thousand times over.

Blame him for the visuals but you can’t blame him for the story/script. Besides, Gunn has already said he will require scripts to be locked and approved before shooting. If you have faith in Gunn, the story/scripting should be fine.

Yeah, I will never forget how fans cringed at Todd Phillips as the director and the first picture of Phenix with Joker make up on. I am just tired of all the negativity. Joker 2 is going to be the next DC movie to hit a billion.

They really need to change the title for this movie. It sounds like a soap opera series.

Agree, I'm a huge comic nerd but 'The Brave and the Bold' seems more like a fan service nod or copyright renewal than a good descriptor of what the film is for general audiences.

Batman: Son of the Demon or Batman: Son of the Bat sound cooler and helps sell the concept better, I think.

So this is how some felt when Ledger/Affleck/Pattinson were cast... :funny:

Yeah, it's certainly not a good signal when your next Batman director already has under his belt a movie featuring two versions of the character, which has been almost entirely marketed on them, opening with a low box office and getting mixed reaction (to be kind)...

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the announcement was made so early to boost The Flash's box office by stoking curiosity to see what the next director entrusted with the keys to Batman might do. I mean... putting the cart before the horse is something we're used to at WB/DC, right ? :oldrazz:

Also, Muschietti's hiring sort of confirmed, to me, that Gunn might have trouble finding solid creative directors. And that would make sense, as the genre is sick and critisized by a part of the profession. I think that before his DCU really takes off and gains any sympathy, he's going to have to deal with yes men.
I'm still rooting for him, but his statement about Muschietti's involvement doesn't strike me as nearly as sincere as what he said in the Rosenbaum interview the other day.
Again, pure speculation here. Or just classic online drama. :D

These are all valid arguments. Yet I can't help thinking that this is a little different.

When Phillips made Joker, even on paper, the project was promised to be something radically different from what he was known for. Here, even if it wasn't completely Muschietti's film (although he said he was the one bringing back Keaton, but maybe that's just a marketing thing), it still gave a glimpse of what a CBM looks like in his hand.
Even more specifically, as I said above, there's here two versions of the same character he's again going to adapt, so I doubt things will be a complete break from what was shown here... But I could be wrong, of course.

A billion and then some because Lady Gaga has a legion of Little Monsters who will go out to see Joker 2 not because they saw the first one or care about DC, but because Gaga is in it.

I will be watching the Flash within the hour. I thought Keaton was supposedly the best part of the film. Isn’t Keaton Batman?

Even down to the most mundane or inconsequential frame, you feel the care he puts into presenting Batman...

...the same way how Phillips, Mazzucchelli, Miller, Sale, Breyfogle, and Capullo did in every panel they drew.

Yeah Joker 2 has a chance to beat out Joker as the top selling rated R movie of all time. Gaga looks like the quintessential Harley. Between true Quinn fans and the Little monsters, this will be a juggernaut.
