A Different Man

Damn shame about A24 doing almost no promo for this.

Sebastian Stan has gone up a few notches in my book as an actor. At the very least, he is taking some very interesting risks, surely more so than Cap Evans ever has in almost a decade. Hell! This is the Male version of The Substance in many ways. A hell of a double feature. Adam Pearson has always been charming in his limited roles. Renate Reinsve Is gorgeous. Seen this a few days ago, but can’t stop thinking about it. One of the best films of they year. Don’t watch a trailer and go in blind.

I’m kinda ashamed to say I wasn’t really aware of Elaine May. I read up about her and she has been recognized by the right ppl, if you know, you know type of thing, but she was mainly known as a script doctor, never took credit, but was considered one of the greats behind the scenes in that field. She was a partner of Mike Nichols for a long time as well.

‘Mikey and Nicky’ is better in a lot of ways than Mean Streets. The suits took her film away from her initially, and when she got it back, it was limited released in 76. This is definitely in that best films of the 70s, but one that not a lot of ppl have seen. To put it bluntly, If this was directed by Scorsese, it be considered a 70s masterpiece.

Sadly, I think more people know her from Ishtar.

I always wondered to how much influence Cassavetes had on this too. Lots of scenes that feel improvised, but like in his films, usually are are not because the writing is so good and specific. Rehearsed to the point the actors played jazz with the words, but rarely changed them. Also captures that 70's grime so effectively.

Tar

I don’t know why it kinda itched to rewatch Tar. I was somewhat lukewarm on it, but this time I was completely entranced by it. A masterful performance and even more masterful directing. Todd Field only making 3 films in 20 something years is a lost to cinema.

Is there a better combo than watching a flick with a cigar and coffee? Padron 1964 Anniversary is on par with a few Cubans out there. Eh.

Azrael

Samara Weaving doesn’t say one damn word and it was captivating to watch. This flick kinda just landed and that was that. This seems to now be the norm with streaming services. No promo, no real talk, just there. In a weird way this felt like a DLC from the new resident evil games. A really solid horror film.

7/10

Kurosawa 2/2 on the year and I still got Serpent's Path to tune into. I liked Chime a lot and I think I liked this one even more.
