For me it's more that he keeps whining about it long after he made his point the first time. Marty, we get it. No one is arguing. Looking at the box office returns this summer and seeing a biopic about Robert Oppenheimer outgrossed a Spider-Man movie and a Guardians of the Galaxy movie clearly shows that people are at least somewhat getting tired of superhero movies.Scorsese overgeneralises with his comments, but come on, it's obvious he means producer made movies with little to no artistic freedom by the filmmakers that are released by the dozen. Shared universes and content that it's made mostly to advertise future content. I doubt he's against every single thing based on a superhero or comic property. Heck, he was even going to produce Joker himself. But I'm sure his respect for Nolan comes from the fact that he left franchises behind and he's doing his own stuff now.
I wouldn’t use that Spider-Man movie as proof as it’s a sequel that made waaay more than its first film showing its audience actually grew by a large amount. For me it's more that he keeps whining about it long after he made his point the first time. Sure but the point still stands that at the end of the day, Oppenheimer, an R-rated biopic, outgrossed a Spider-Man movie. Both ATSV and GOTG Vol 3 have done very well at the box office but Oppenheimer outperforming both of them is nothing short of impressive.I wouldn’t use that Spider-Man movie as proof as it’s a sequel that made waaay more than its first film showing its audience actually grew by a large amount.
I agree it may come off as whining and "told you so", but it's not like he takes a megaphone and yells in plazas and public places on his own. He's constantly being asked in interviews by reporters who want juicy headlines, so therefore he answers. The fact that this year has brought an audience fatigue in generic superhero films and mediocre blockbusters, while interest for more original or different projects has been boosted, is exactly why these conversations become topical again and comments like this resurface. For me it's more that he keeps whining about it long after he made his point the first time. I don't even blame him as much as I do journalists who keep asking the same questions to the same people knowing full well what the answers are going to be just so they can get clicks. But to that extent, Scorsese can just avoid it entirely by not commenting.I agree it may come off as whining and "told you so", but it's not like he takes a megaphone and yells in plazas and public places on his own. Oh I agree about the journalists. Scorsese feels he has to fight the good fight.I don't even blame him as much as I do journalists who keep asking the same questions to the same people knowing full well what the answers are going to be just so they can get clicks. Journalism is dying across all fields, sports and politics for example. They're beholden to corporate interests, and blogs often do a better job. As an adjacent example to the latter, you can find more thoughtful reviews to most movies here than on the rotten tomatoes links.Oh I agree about the journalists. Scorsese feels he has to fight the good fight.![]()
That's true but can't we discount that on the basis that 2023 is an anomaly?Sure but the point still stands that at the end of the day, Oppenheimer, an R-rated biopic, outgrossed a Spider-Man movie. i'd be curious to know if Marty even saw or liked Joker. I wouldnt be surprised if he felt Todd Philipps was ripping him off. lol
Goodfellas getting almost completely shut out at the Oscars in favor of Dances with Wolves would have been my villain origin story.Marty is still smarting over Hugo bombing all those years ago![]()

Scorsese is for all intents and purposes an artistic demi-God and can say whatever he wants. What a waste of energy it is to get mad that someone doesn't like CBMs.
