Comedy The Conners - Roseanne Without Roseanne

I've been watching some of it this season. (I missed a few episodes of S1. I stopped watching.). Re-opening the Lunch Box could be interesting, if only for nostalgia's sake. Becky has gotten a good storyline with her baby. They don't seem to bother making DJ act too much. Katey Segal is nice. It's all rather quaint, kind of rudderless without Roseanne, who really pulled things together and gave it focus. On the other hand, it did used to be mostly about Roseanne. So the other characters get more of a chance now. However, I don't think Sara Gilbert is really interesting enough to be the lead and it's overall not as funny without Roseanne.

So has anyone been watching this season. I like the idea of Jackie and Becky reopening the Lunch Box. Not so happy that they broke up Darlene and Ben.
Mostly. Two or so episodes behind but I have kept up with it. The show without Roseanne is giving some more space to everyone else except DJ. It is almost enough he could be written out of the show and no one would notice. I don't know if it is the kid or the character but they cannot find anything interesting to do with him. Even his family is mostly left to the wayside.

It's actually kind of baffling how they don't want to develop DJ much. Even when Roseanne was there they didn't give him that much to do. Michael Fishman is not that bad of an actor. They are choosing to focus more on Darlene and Becky. Maybe when their current storylines settle down a bit they will choose to have more to do with him and his family. They could make him a more interesting character. Remember when he was young he was interested in filmmaking? He could get more involved with that or with stuff going on in Lanford.

Is this the only show that actually acknowledged COVID?

There are a few but most of the ones I watch outside of 9-1-1 don't do much acknowledgement besides the bare minimum when they do.

This is Us acknowledged COVID and wrote it in their story along with BLM protests. There are some “medical” shows that wrote it in as well (like Grey’s Anatomy and The Good Doctor).

My main gripe is how the show uses masks. They have the characters wear them, but then take them off or pull them down to speak. I get it when they're in the main house or when it's just the family, but they will do this in public settings too like Darlene and Becky at Wellman's or Dan and Ben (who wasn't wearing one) at the hardware store. In the latest episode, Patton Oswalt comes in and Jackie is wearing a mask while handing out food to customers at the Lunchbox, but when he comes in to meet her there she takes it off and so does he?

So yeah I think this show should end this season. They're running out of ideas and it's weird how much they're avoiding the original show or mentioning Roseanne. Dan got remarried and just a few mentions this season.

So the show is ending this season and they got rid of DJ's family so all the black actors are pretty much gone. Dan got married to Katey Sagal, Darlene and Becky are living together with Darlene remarried and constantly changing jobs and Becky a single parent college student. Jackie is married and reopened the Lunch Box to a mixed level of success with Becky as a co-owner. Harris is pregnant and Mark is struggling to pay for college. Bev has Alzheimer's and decided to spend her last lucid years traveling the country by herself. Idk if this is what I wanted for these characters...

Not just DJ's family but DJ himself. A combined 17 seasons and they could never figure out what to do with poor DJ. Everything else is status quo as well. None of the Conners ever seem to get anywhere in their lives. It really is so repetitive and tiresome. I know the original creators had this idea of a "real lower-middle class" family struggling to make ends meet but this is some nonsense. After the reboot they should have done something more than rehash Roseanne for the 2020's.

DJ going from filmmaker to army with PTSD was sad, but compared to his sisters he had the most stable life. They just kept giving Darlene stupid reasons to stay in poverty. I don't know what's worse: agreeing to take over Dan's mortgage right before COVID instead of she and Ben moving in together in Chicago or giving up a great job to settle for a lunch lady job to pay for Mark's college without trying for a scholarship of some kind. Yes the writing is terrible.

That's probably why they wrote DJ out; he was too stable and well adjusted despite all that compared to Darlene, Becky, Dan and the rest of them. All those choices for Darlene were just too sloppily done. Becky isn't much better but at least she hasn't completely ruined her life in easily avoidable mistakes like Darlene does over and over. Dan has at least moved on with Louise and so far she hasn't been dragged down by being hitched to Dan.

Jackie's finally semi-stable but she is still determined to sabotage her marriage to Neville like she does every relationship. Of all the cast she has had the most closure with her mother after they couldn't figure out what to do with her (Beverly).

Are they crazy enough to bring Roseanne back as a ghost? :o

I'm glad there's finally a date, and that the show will be ending on its own terms. Though I've liked The Conners, and even Roseanne when the show first came back, a lot of the beats in recent seasons have felt repetitive, and the show has slowly been losing various characters for one reason or another.

As if. She’s worse now than when she got herself fired.
We've all publicly claimed that they saw Joe BIden was raped by a demon and is now eating fetuses. :o

It's finally over. 7 seasons/112 episodes is very good for a spin-off/revival.

I think I dropped off around Season 4??? so just decided to watch the last two episodes and honestly...I feel like I didnt miss much.

Show was overall decent but I always felt they failed at giving Darlene's kids the same type of charm/force/impact Darlene/Becky in the original series. Basically ignoring DJ was the strangest choice. Along with ignoring Jackies husband/son from the original series just to make her the even more quirky aunt she already was.

If only Roseanne didn't go crazy...

It was decent, the finale. Still strange who wasn't there. No Beverly Rose, not even a mention of DJ outside of his younger self appearing in flashbacks (though I get that Michael Fishman wasn't in this season), but instead we get the random new guy who just started working at the restaurant...what, an episode or two ago? Not even Jane Lynch was here somewhere, and she was only introduced this season!

Six episodes is not a lot of time for a final season to accomplish much, and this show had a hefty task on its hand trying to continue without its lead. It did have some development with Mark moving to New York, but characters like Harris and Louise felt shortchanged to me. John Goodman addressing the audience and walking off was nice, I will admit.

Louise knew what she was getting into. :o
