I wish they had let Melissa film the scene with the head band and big hair, that would have been HIIIIIIIlarious....

When it comes to headbands and big hair, we'll just have to make do with Supergirl's mom for now ...

That's the last ever Superman Family, were Supergirl resigns from Secret Hearts prior to her move to Chicago and the events of DNAOS.

There's a cute little bit at the start of the rampaging King Kong robot story were a car falls right on top of Linda Danvers, crushing her, so some paramedics dutifully put her into their ambulance -- of course Linda is faking being unconscious, but she has to come up with an escape before they examine her and find the familiar red 'n' blues hidden under her street clothes.

The Adventure Comics story is particularly weird, as it mostly takes place inside the Girl of Steel's mind, as she lies close to death. There's a funny bit when Supergirl saves Nasty, and Nasty tries to pull off Supergirl's blonde wing to expose Linda's brunette hair.

Featuring one of the best Supergirl covers of all time...

Supergirl confronts a clone of herself, and (surprisingly) the clone doesn't die at the end of the story, she just goes off to live her own quiet life.

Which begs the question: did Supergirl really die in CoIE..?!?

Dragons, birdmen, and krakens -- Supergirl shows her versatility.

(And the casual racism of the cover artists.)

Today's collection of pre-Crisis covers has been brought to you by the word "STOP!", and the number 17.

Love the Best of DC cover, with Linda swooshing into Supergirl..! Great stuff.

And how can any true comicbook fan not thrill at the sight of an Infantino cover..!?! A stunning image, from the master himself.

And this one is particularly sad...

...as Kara Zor-El was already dead by the time of its publication.

What's interesting to note with the Lois Lane love rivals cover is that it reprints a story from Lois Lane #20 (Oct 1960), published a month before Kara turned 16 in Action Comics #270. Fortunately the cover is misleading: there's no actual romance between Superman and Supergirl in the story itself.

Here's your complete pre-Crisis set:

A few notes:

  • The cover scene from Action Comics actually does happen in the issue!!
  • The Adventure Comics story is quite a sad one: a reclusive inventor launches an anti-capitalist assault on various banks because he couldn't afford to give his sickly young son healthcare as a child. Unfortunately one of the banks he destroys happens to employ his now-grown-up son.
  • And finally, the Supergirl Vol. 2 issue is the first appearance of the movie-like costume. (Also, someone should tell DC that there's no wind on the Moon!)
