Well, Australia make it to lunch unscathed, and Rogers makes a couple of nice boundaries off the bowling of Mark Wood. Warner is still on a pair, though...

I am reasonably confident that Oz will take the match into tomorrow. It would be unbelievable for all of their batsmen to fail as they did yesterday, and there is enough skill there to bat for two sessions. It just needs discipline and cool heads. England will be expecting to knock them over, so a little momentum swing (let's say 50/0) will go a long way.

Yeah it would be even worse for them to get knocked over for a 2nd time after England made nearly 400. They should have had a serious team talk (bollocking) and not lose their heads this time. Btw I'm not really a fan of declaring when there is so much time left in the match. Just swing the bat earlier, say from 330 and get to your desired total earlier.

Finally got a wicket. Was actually getting a bit uncomfortable there. 113-1, Rogers gone for 52.

You have to consider that Finn and Broad are both an injury risk against fast bowling, however, and the last thing England wanted was to be down another bowler.

A very strong start by Australia, though Englishmen everywhere can thank me for taking a wicket by checking the score. :)

Fair point Reg. 3 wickets in quick succession now. 136 -4. Big step towards winning the Ashes there.

Excellent from Ben Stokes with the ball today, having been a touch naive with the bat.

If I were Australian, I would have deep concerns about Steve Smith. No doubt he is an electric player on a flat deck, but he really doesn't seem to be resilient enough to be batting at three in all conditions. That may well come with more experience, but at the moment Australia seem to be pinning a Joe Root-type responsibility on him, and I just don't think he is up to it.

Warner deserves some stick for a loose waft just after his opening partner had been dismissed. Childish.

Can Michael Clarke keep the Ashes and his captaincy alive with a batting masterclass?

Don't think there's enough support left now even if he does turn it on. Great to see Anderson in brutal form last match, Broad in the first innings here and now Stokes.

Wow, they've all had an amazing match-winning spell. And it's not like Wood and Moeen haven't contributed. Hopefully Bairstow can nail down his spot and Hales can come in for Lyth (or Moeen open and Rashid come on as you suggested above). If Bell ever rediscovers his old form we'll be in good shape for the future.

Well, no fairytale for Clarke. Out for 13, Wood taking the wicket. 175 for 5 and they'll do well to avoid the innings defeat from here with 156 more runs needed and just Johnson of note to come in.

I'm glad Wood got a wicket, because he was proving pretty expensive.

Surely questions must now be asked of Clarke, if he doesn't jump first? It sounds like he had a couple of lives before he was dismissed this time, and his captaincy has hardly been inspirational.

Once the series is done I can see one or the other happening.

They need another Border. That's what they need.

A humorless ******** who'll shove his Duncan Fearnley up your arse handle last if he thought you weren't taking your play seriously.

It does seem that way, though Root needs to score more runs on foreign soil.

And, once again, Regwec takes a wicket by checking the score! :)

6 down, Nevill out. We're now onto the last partnership of note. How much time do we have left?

Another wicket but now they are going off for bad light. 241 -7 at stumps.

    Five-for for Stokes! Johnson out.

If I wanted to wrap this up in four overs, I would invite Finn simply to hurl it as fast as he can manage, screw the run rate.

Edit: Damn off for bad light. Australia survive the day.

Thinking of where England have fallen short in this series, two categories emerge: top order batting, and quality spin. Trying Moeen out as an opener and bringing Rashid in at eight could work wonders if it worked at all.
