We've already seen this with PC games and playstation games. last gen, dust 514 while it may not've been everyone's cup of tea, had crossplay with PC's EVE online.

This gen, the free game warthunder runs seamlessly with Ps4 and PC gamers.

And I think someone mentioned that back in the day there was a FFS title that had crossplay with the Ps2 and Xbox. So it is definitely possible, the question is, why aren't they doing it?

If it is because they'd lose money - I don't see how. People who buy Ps4 versions of games still need to get PsPlus and Xbone gamers still need XBL. So sony & microsoft still get the cuts out of having their customers committing to online play, so what exactly do they lose by allowing gameplay with other platforms?

I mean, it HAS happened before... so why not implement it further? They all came to an agreement for it on that FFS title... so what, is it just up to the developer? I don't know. But I think it should happen.

Not gonna happen. Xbox games and PlayStation games run on different networks/severs. Its as simple as that.

I can se why they wouldn't but it would be nice. Although it would mean the ending of having to have multiple consoles to play with your friends across multiple consoles.

it has happened before with final fantasy x, has it not?

not necessarily. you still have to buy either one of the consoles to play online at all. it's just that the communities for multiplatform games wouldn't be divided anymore.

No. FFX was only on the PS3, PS4 and Vita and has no online play. Im assuming that's a typo for XI and if that's the case then the answer is still no again for the reason I pointed out.

You may want it but its not going to happen. Lets say it was a possibility, why would either company allow it, especially MS? MS's online infrastructure is a very closed system and its how they are able to maintain its integrity. They'd be compromising themselves having it open to communicate with Sony who is notorious for their network issues. There is no incentive or advantage for them to greenlight this

one of the final fantasy games had cross platform, i don't remember which one maybe XI. if they got it to work once why couldn't they do it again? they still do with pc and ps4 games. xbone is just another pc ain't it?

Cross-Network Play
First, in addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we’re enabling developers to support cross-network play as well. This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks – including other console and PC networks.

Of course, it’s up to game developers to support this feature, and Xbox Live players will always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live players. We’re thrilled to confirm that Psyonix’s Rocket League will be one of the first games to take advantage of this new capability by enabling cross-network play between Xbox One and PC players, with an open invitation for other networks to participate as well.

first with PC, MAYBE with Ps4 later.

I wonder if this could open up the possibility of Street Fighter V coming to the X1.

if I recall, didn't someone from Capcom say one main reason why they went console exclusive with the PS4 was because Sony was willing to do cross platform play while MS did not?

no. the main reason they went console exclusive was because sony was funding the development of sf5.

crossplay is just a perk of that

Wow, this would be awesome if it happened.

Noone else excited about the crossplay? (rather than age-old debates about reasons for exclusives )

you're thinking of ffs14

no. not that.

I believe this is the article I read:

http://www.eventhubs.com/news/2015/...ty-backlash-and-whole-lot-more-ign-interview/

"Either they’ve gotten tired of typing ("F" word comments) or they’ve somewhat come around to see why we’ve partnered with Sony this way and why we’ve gone through a platform that lets us have cross play between the console and the PC version...

I’d like to think that hopefully, in the meantime, some people might have bought a PS4 and they’ve realized it’s a great platform. Or maybe once they’ve heard of the exclusivity they’ve gone and bought one to play Street Fighter 5, who knows?"

It's still important to know Capcom's motivations in choosing to build an exclusive partnership. Ono notes the specific amenities that Sony's PS4 has to offer, and how they look to supplement the SF5 experience.

"I think that this (console) generation in particular, it’s not so much that there’s a huge difference of power between the PS4 and the other consoles, it’s just that other things like the services, the OS, the flexible online system… These are the things that we really wanted to have at our fingertips.

Street Fighter has been online since Street Fighter 4, so of course it’s very important to keep that part of the game on. We’ve been very pleased with what the PS4 online capabilities have allowed us to do with the game."

I took that to be an implicit statement that one main reason for going with the PS4 was that its more "flexible" online system allowed for crossplay between console and PC. Which MS at that time wasn't doing. So, perhaps, if MS had a more flexible online system at that time, maybe there would have been a chance they could have had SF V as well.

but, who knows.....

in theory, it would be great.

for example, I have Destiny for the PS4 but some of my Hype friends such as yourself and others have it for the X1.

so, if Destiny supported cross platform play, we could play against each other even though we are on different consoles.

i don't think that really says if crossplay was a determining factor. but it was for ffs14.

It's what I've always wanted. Also the reason I bought every console and gaming pc last gen, but even then you can't play with everyone unless you buy the same game on every platform too, which I hadn't taken into consideration. If this was adopted it would be good for gamers while consoles could still have their big exclusives that can only be played on their own machine.

agreed.

Excited? No, not really. I mean I think it's a good thing for sure, but it's not really that exciting to me. I might be missing something though.

Of course, can understand if it's not particularly exciting to people who it wouldn't have much impact for lol.

I got back in touch with a load of people I went to school with about 4 or 5 years ago and we've all started meeting up reasonably regularly. Nearly all of them are gamers now (play every day) and play the same obvious online games. We wanted to all play together but people play on different systems and it would involve at least half of the guys buying a new console/pc. Which would be fine for me and probably some of them, I just don't want to also buy every online game multiple times, especially when new.

I've had this conversation more than once with someone new I've met once it's established we're both into gaming. 'Yeah we should definitely play sometime. What system are you on? Oh.' End of conversation, lol.

And I've also said I'd play with someone on their system, bought the system and played for a few months. But at some point I have to say something along the lines of 'this has been fun and all but I don't know if it's been fun enough to justify spending this much just to play with you'. :woot:

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. People get excited about this stuff, but for me it's like...okay, cool. Not in a bad way, just not something I think is all that huge. Biggest thing I think it helps with is extending a playbase for a certain game, which is cool.
