‘The Selection’ & Taylor Hackford Military Drama Get CW Pilot Orders

The CW today got on the pilot board with its first orders, a Selection redo and Taylor Hackford’s Company Town. They join The Originals, the planted Vampire Diaries spinoff, which will air as an episode of the hit drama in April.

The CW brass has been high on the concept for the Hunger Games-esque The Selection since the project was pitched in 2011. The network first ordered a pilot for the adaptation of the book by Kiera Cass last year. The project, written by Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain, didn’t make the cut to series, but the network kept it in redevelopment, ordering a new script from Craft and Fain. CW president Mark Pedowitz recently said that the network is quite happy with the duo’s new treatment, which is now getting a pilot green light. Set 300 years in the future, The Selection is described as an epic romance centering on a working class young woman chosen by lottery to participate in a competition with 25 other women for the Royal Prince’s hand to become the nation’s next queen. Balancing her loyalty to family, true love, and kingdom, she must attempt to remain true to herself as she navigates the cutthroat competition and palace intrigue, all while a budding rebellion threatens to topple the crown. Warner Bros. TV is producing.

EXCLUSIVE: The CW has set directors for three of its drama pilots. Alex Graves will direct and executive produce The Selection. Written by Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain, Selection is based on the book by Kiera Cass. Set 300 years in the future, the epic romance centers on a working-class young woman chosen by lottery to participate in a competition with 25 other women for the Royal Prince’s hand to become the nation’s next queen. This marks the second Selection pilot ordered by the CW; the first one last season was directed by Mark Piznarski. Last year, Graves directed the pilot for ABC’s horror/mystery drama 666 Park Ave. He also helmed the pilot for Fox’s Fringe as virtually all of his pilots have gone to series. Additionally, Graves directed the two-hour opener of Fox’s Terra Nova.
I've heard the new script for this year's pilot is much better than the last, and the new choice of director is pretty much top-notch. His Fringe pilot was fantastic, as was his Terra Nova pilot. 666 Park Avenue's writing didn't impress me, but his work on the pilot was pretty great too. I'll be interested to see where this goes.

Did they get a new actress or keep the original one?

What I've read makes it sounds like they'll recast.

Ok ill be happy with that since I didn't think that girl from FNL could carry a lead position.

Definitely takes her off the table as the lead of this show...

Aimee Teegarden Toplines CW Pilot ‘Oxygen’
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

EXCLUSIVE: Friday Night Lights alumna Aimee Teegarden, who played the lead in the CW pilot The Selection last year, is back at the network as the star of a drama pilot. No, she is not reprising her role in the new Selection pilot. Instead, she is playing the lead in Oxygen. The project, written by Meredith Averill and directed by Gary Fleder, centers on Emery (Teegarden), a teen girl who falls in love with an alien boy, one of nine of his kind integrated into a suburban high school. CBS TV Studios, Ole Prods, Isla de Babel and 360 Powwow produce. Teegarden is repped by Innovative.
I'll be curious to see who they go for this time around.

Sean Patrick Thomas Cast In CW Pilot ‘The Selection’ Reprising Role From Original Pilot
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

EXCLUSIVE: Save The Last Dance star Sean Patrick Thomas has been cast in the CW’s retooled pilot for the Hunger Games-esque The Selection. He also co-starred in the original Selection pilot last year, and I hear he is the only cast member from last year to return. Set 300 years in the future, The Selection is described as an epic romance centering on a working class young woman chosen by lottery to participate in a competition with 25 other women for the Royal Prince’s hand to become the nation’s next queen. Thomas is reprising his role as Sylvan Santos, the Queen’s close advisor and an expert on all things related to royal etiquette. Warner Bros. TV is producing the pilot, written by Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain based on Kiera Cass’ book. Aimee Teegarden, who played the lead in The Selection last year, also is back this year but as the star of another CW pilot, Oxygen. Thomas, repped by Innovative, recurred on the CW drama Ringer last season.

The CW is bringing another member from the original cast of the Hunger Games-esque The Selection. Australian actress Peta Sergeant has been added to the retooled pilot, reprising her role as Gaia, a rebel leader who is working to overthrow the monarchy. She joins Sean Patrick Thomas who also is reprising his role from last year’s pilot. Set 300 years in the future, The Selection is described as an epic romance centering on a working class young woman chosen by lottery to participate in a competition with 25 other women for the Royal Prince’s hand to become the nation’s next queen. Warner Bros. TV is producing the pilot, written by Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain based on Kiera Cass’ book. Sergeant is with TalentWorks and Magnolia Entertainment.

CW Pilot ‘The Selection’ Casts Its Lead
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

EXCLUSIVE: In her first pilot season in the U.S., Israeli actress Yael Grobglas has landed one of the most sought-after roles for young actresses, the lead in the CW drama The Selection. Because of a theater commitment in her native country, I hear Grobglas, who is of French-Austrian decent, only had two weeks to audition in Los Angeles before returning home. They resulted in her booking America Singer. Set 300 years in the future, The Selection is an epic romance centering on America Singer (Grobglas), a working class young woman chosen by lottery to participate in a competition with 25 other women for the Royal Prince’s hand to become the nation’s next queen. Warner Bros. TV is producing the pilot, written by Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain based on Kiera Cass’ book. Aimee Teegarden, who played America in The Selection last year, is the lead of another CW pilot this year, Oxygen. Two other Selection cast members from last year, Sean Patrick Thomas and Peta Sergeant, are reprising their roles. While an unknown in the U.S., Grobglas has played the lead of a series before – she toplined the Israeli series Tanuhi (Give It A Rest). She is with Thruline and attorney Jamie Feldman.

Surprised that they went with such an unknown for the lead. But she's certainly attractive enough to fit right in on this network. The character's name is awful, though... :o

CW's 'The Selection' Casts New Leading Man (Exclusive)
12:59 PM PST 2/28/2013 by Lesley Goldberg

In the rebooted pilot, newcomer Michael Malarkey takes over the role played by Ethan Peck.

The CW has found its new Prince Maxon.

Michael Malarkey has been tapped to star in the network's rebooted The Selection pilot, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.

Set 300 years in the future, the drama is an epic romance centering on a young working-class woman named America Singer (Israeli actress Yael Grobglas) chosen by lottery to participate in a competition with 25 other women for the Royal Prince Maxon's hand to become the nation's next queen. Balancing her loyalty to family, true love and the kingdom, she must attempt to remain true to herself as she navigates the cutthroat competition and palace intrigue, all while a budding rebellion threatens to topple the crown. It's based on the book by Kiera Cass.

Malarkey will play Maxon, the charming, self-serving and untrustworthy son of the king and queen who are not pleased with his reckless behavior. He's thrilled to have a group of young women competing for his affections and is intrigued by the feisty labor-class girl America.

Born in Beirut, Lebanon, Malarkey grew up in Ohio and resides in London, where he trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. His theater credits include London productions of The Great Gatsby, Million Dollar Quartet and Arthur. On the TV side, his credits include the Irish drama Raw.

Malarkey steps into the role played by Ethan Peck in The CW's first incarnation of its Hunger Games-ish pilot. Sean Patrick Thomas and Peta Sergeant will reprise their roles in the retooled Selection pilot.

The Vampire Diaries' Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain will pen and executive produce the Warner Bros. Television pilot, which will film in Budapest; Alex Graves will direct.

Celia Massingham has landed a lead role opposite Yael Grobglas in the CW drama The Selection. Set 300 years in the future, The Selection is an epic romance centering on America Singer (Grobglas), a working class young woman chosen by lottery to participate in a competition with 25 other women for the Royal Prince’s hand to become the nation’s next queen. Massingham will play Celeste, a young woman competing in The Selection to become wife of Prince Maxon (Michael Malarkey) and future queen.
Can't say I recognize the names of any of these young actors. Though, considering how often the network relies on using actors from previous CW shows to do the casting for them, maybe that's a good thing.

In his first pilot season in the U.S., young British actor Lucien Laviscount (Skins) has landed one of the male leads in the CW reboot of The Selection after arriving in Los Angeles less than three weeks ago. Set 300 years in the future, The Selection is an epic romance centering on America Singer (Yael Grobglas), a working class young woman chosen by lottery to participate in a competition with 25 other women for the Royal Prince’s hand to become the nation’s next queen. Laviscount, repped by Industry Entertainment, Waring and McKenna in the UK and attorney Adam Kaller, will play Aspen Leger, a handsome/brave young man from the servant class who is having a secret, illegal relationship with America. The role was played by fellow Brit William Moseley last season. Laviscount first got in pilot action last year when he auditioned via tape from Britain, landing a co-starring role in NBC’s Midnight Sun.

'Buffy's' Anthony Head to Co-Star in CW's 'The Selection' (Exclusive)
11:43 AM PST 3/6/2013 by Lesley Goldberg

He'll play King Clarkson in the network's retooled "Hunger Games"-esque pilot.

Giles is (sort of) coming back to the CW.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum Anthony Head has been tapped to play royalty on the network's retooled drama pilot The Selection, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.

Set 300 years in the future, the drama is an epic romance centering on a young working-class woman named America Singer (Israeli actress Yael Grobglas) chosen by lottery to participate in a competition with 25 other women for the Royal Prince Maxon's (newcomer Michael Malarkey) hand to become the nation's next queen. Balancing her loyalty to family, true love and the kingdom, she must attempt to remain true to herself as she navigates the cutthroat competition and palace intrigue, all while a budding rebellion threatens to topple the crown. It's based on the book by Kiera Cass.

Head -- who played Rupert Giles, the lovable brains of the Scooby gang on the CW predecessor WB Network's Buffy the Vampire Slayer -- will play King Clarkson, the patriarch of the royal family that rules the nation. He replaces Martin Donovan, who played the role in the previous incarnation of the pilot. Clarkson is described as a seasoned leader and politico who warns his son, Maxon, that he'll have to give up any idea of romantic love and that his choice should be based on making a powerful political alliance.

The Vampire Diaries' Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain will pen and executive produce the Warner Bros. Television pilot, which will film in Budapest; Alex Graves will direct. Sean Patrick Thomas and Peta Sergeant will reprise their roles in the retooled Selection pilot, which will also feature Celia Massingham and Lucien Laviscount.

In addition to Buffy, Head's credits include features The Iron Lady andGhost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, and the small screen's Merlin, Free Agents (both the British and NBC's short-lived remake) and Little Britain. He's repped by ICM Partners.

Louise Lombard Tapped For Queen Role In CW Pilot ‘The Selection’
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

EXCLUSIVE: CW’s Selection reboot has found its queen. CSI and Stargate Universe alumna Louise Lombard has joined the project based on Kiera Cass’ book. The Selection, written by Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain and directed by Alex Graves, is an epic romance centering on America Singer (Yael Grobglas), a working class young woman chosen by lottery to participate in a competition with 25 other women for the Royal Prince’s hand to become the nation’s next queen. Lombard will play the current queen, Queen Amberly. Refined, intelligent and beloved by the people, Queen Amberly is a canny political player within the palace, and knows everything there is to know about every single girl in The Selection competition. The role was played by Leonor Varela in the original pilot last year. Lombard, by Paradigm and Affirmative Entertainment, was recently seen in BBC film Dripping In Chocolate.

The Selection 2.0 - SpoilerTV preview on the changes from last year
Posted by Tariq Gamei at Friday, February 01, 2013

The CW has revamped last year's The Selection, the pilot set 300 years in the future about a poor woman who is chosen by lottery to compete to become the next queen of a war-torn nation.

Changes include: toughening up its lead, adding more focus on the palace politics and rebel uprising with alot more sex!

The additional focus on the palace includes adding new characters such as Prince Rafe, the much more responsible younger brother of prince Maxon who is having an affair with Fiona, a girl competing in The Selection, Prince Maxon himself is even more of a bad boy in this incarnation, hosting strip pool games and almost raping the main character in a scene, America is a much tougher character this time around more 'Katness' like, she is completely against the state and the ideology the palace represents and attempts to flee The Selection but is forced to "play along" with it in order to save the man she loves; Aspen, a man from her village who is recruited into the army and stationed at the Palace. Aspen is very outspoken and often speaks out against authority causing him to be 'disciplined'. Different political forces control many of the 25 girls competing in The Selection, meanwhile the rebel army plan on kidnapping America and using her to rally the people in their uprising.

Overall the pilot is very much a mash-up of Revolution, The Hunger Games, Game of Thrones and The Bachelor

Kiera Cass the author of the young adults novels the CW's "The Selection" pilot is based on has confirmed the CW is taking a completely different direction with "The Selection 2.0", targeting a mature audience this time around, the cast is significantly older than their characters in the books... and the characters are very different, harder and darker than their book versions.
I like the sound of this. With all the changes that have been made, from the script to the cast to the director, I'm really looking forward to this.

I have to say that I'm disappointed that joss hasn't used ASH (or any of the original cast) in anything since buffy

I'm surprised he hasn't.

So was the original pilot from last year already taped? I wonder if they would ever release it?

From what I've heard, I don't know that they'd even want people to see it...

But, you never know. Maybe a DVD special feature.

lol for some reason I think this may just get passed over yet again.
