The Daily Planet - Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨SPOILERS🚨)

I never get why people get so tense about this. You’re not going to miss out, it’ll get here when it gets here. Just relax so he can do it right.

As shigeru miyamoto says “a delayed game is eventually good but a rushed game is ahhhhh I’m being eaten by a shark someone come help and stop quoting meeeee”
Plus there’s a good chance close to half the people here will be like “THIS is what we waited for? THIS?”

Gunn better get ta steppin. Fandago did a survey of the most anticipated films for their users in 2025 and Superman came in at 9/10. Now is the time to strike..

.. like, anything.

Bet that changes after the trailer drops.

I hope they put the trailer with Sonic 3 as well. I probably won't be seeing Mufasa in theaters... already got my Sonic tickets though lol!
Sonic is alright, but I'll just wait until it comes to a streaming service like Amazon Prime. Mufasa, on the other hand, doesn't do anything for me at all. That said, the target audience for both films is families, which is one of, if not the most important, demographics needed to make Superman successful. So, if this is indeed the plan, then I'm definitely here for it!

These statistics are not reliable in the slightest. Let's take for example these two tops drawn up by Fandango itself:
1000012626.jpg
Barbie and Oppenheimer in seventh and eighth position respectively among the most anticipated films of summer 2023. They will finish the year in first and third place in the calendar year.
To match Barbie's result at the box office we would have to add the takings of Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and The Flash which occupy the top three positions in the ranking.
Furthermore, 5 out of the top 10 films listed ended the year outside the top 10.

1000012627.jpg
Inside Out 2 in seventh place. All-time record for an animated film and highest-grossing film of 2024.
Moana 2, which is projected to gross over 1 billion dollars at the box office and will close among the three highest grossers of the year, outside the top 10. As will Wicked, another success of this year and, perhaps, of the awards season.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire in third place on the list is not even among the top 20 grosses of the year. Just as The War of the Rohirrim in the near future.

These lists should be taken for what they are: a game and nothing more.

Look a lot of us forgot Moana 2 was coming out this year and Wicked isn't even holding space there.

I do think the marketing machine needs to get into gear, but… Wicked Part 2 being as low as it is after the splash it just made, and The Accountant 2 placing at all, kind of gives away that Fandango’s polling leaves something to be desired.

As if that means much. They still have 4 months to get people hyped

We all know this movie is a big gamble but I don't think anything like that is terribly concerning right now. The GA has no idea this movie exists yet.

The pressure on Superman is ridiculously high as the general audience appears to be done with DC after the Joker fiasco. It’s going to take time but Supes is a great character to start the clime back up for the DC universe. The Man of Steel can take the bullets.

Harrison Ford, Tom Cruise, Scarlet Johansson, Pedro Pascal, ect are big movie stars that the general audience knows but the the Ballerina at 4 is interesting. No Thunderbolts????

I don’t necessarily think the general audience discriminates strongly between DC and Marvel. For instance, the Sony Marvel movies constantly tank because they’re poor films, while the Disney Marvel movies typically succeed. I doubt the general audience recognizes Sony vs Disney marvel, and the outcome has more to do with quality. While I think the Marvel fan base is happier than the DC fan base, I believe the distinction is less important for the GA.

Anecdotally, I know a handful of people who enjoy superhero movies but who can’t correctly say which hero belongs to which comic franchise.

If I'm thinking about any teaser trailers that impress, or just the 'first' trailer, one movie trailer that comes to mind is the first Iron Man trailer. (I guess you could still consider that a teaser trailer--and not a full-length trailer?)

I always dreamed of Superman having a first trailer like that, or at least the flying part, in super speed. If only a Superman trailer like that had been released before the first Iron Man movie, audiences would have been intrigued.

Another past teaser trailer I consider to stand out strongly was the Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance teaser trailer. Yes, the film bombed commercially and critically, but I don't think anyone can deny that the first trailer they released for that movie was very impressive.

Conclusion, I think it is important that the trailer for Superman leaves a good impression on modern audiences, particularly dumb people that think Superman is boring. That being said, the teaser trailer for Superman Returns did not impress enough. The teaser for Man of Steel didn't show enough to 'wow' people. Of course the first actual trailer for Man of Steel certainly did impress. Can't say the movie did the same.

However it seems that people already were getting hyped about Man of Steel before we had any trailers. With Nolan and Snyder's names being attached, and taking a more grounded approach to the character, and having seen the set photos of Cavill in costume, it seemed to attract interest, but it doesn't seem to be the case now, because it doesn't look like so many people are especially excited about the new Superman. Gunn has a lot to live up to. Still worried about the potential campy approach, if that is the direction Gunn is headed. It better not be silly. Not only would going campy be silly, it would be irrelevant.

What I can't understand about Bryan Singer is how he could have thought his film was a good story for Superman when it was incredibly mediocre and boring. It's like Singer was completely oblivious to the times, completely unaware of how unpopular Superman had become to general audiences after Batman '89. 'Superman Returns' had no action or fights. The film needed that, or at least a better story and a Superman that actually speaks. The film nearly destroyed Superman's legacy.

It has to make audiences care and think why they should go see it. In an era where there are already so many superhero films, problem being that most people don't even know that Superman was the first, so to many of them, they might just think, 'He's like Vision, Invincible, Ikaris from Eternals, Dr. Manhattan...or just Iron Man without armor, no mask.'

But unless the trailer does impress, then that's a good start.

Just relax, folks.

You expect James Gunn to just spill the beans on a hundred-million-dollar marketing campaign for his new Superman movie to random fans pestering him about it on social media?

Asking him when the trailer is going to be released is entirely useless. We'll all find out either when the trailer's online (lol), or when/if there'll be an official announcement from Gunn, DC and Warner Bros. about it being released.

We all know how this works. I'm sure this isn't your first rodeo.

If it's really going to be attached to Mufasa and/or Sonic 3, it'll be online next week.
It's always funny to me when someone jumps in to tell everyone to relax after a few posts expressing annoyance or eagerness.

Like... we're a fan community. We're just talking here 😅 Don't worry, life is still going on outside, no one's in serious distress about it.

It's okay to voice that the teasing/coy way Gunn is engaging with fans about this has crossed over into a bit annoying if thats how your feeling.

It's so run of the mill by now for us fans it's kind of on brand at this point lol. We all know how this goes, waiting is just apart of the thrill and Wizard of Oz. Before you know it, we'll have Superman on Blu Ray.

Sony Marvel struggles because it doesn’t have Disney behind it. Disney and its platforms gives Marvel films an automatic advantage over all the competition especially 4 quadrant movies. I am still shocked that the Marvels bombed so badly. The Disney name kept it from bombing like Joker 2. The best example of this is a rated R Deadpool movie with Wolverine. Two box office characters that never cracked a billion destroys the all time record for rated R movies with the Disney bump.

I have no clue how it will go, but if I had to guess, it will most likely have some of the new theme overlayed with shots of Superman performing some big saves.

And probably some Shots of Clark, Lois, the DP, Lex, and the man in black as well.

The other heroes? No idea, he may or may not include them in the first trailer.
If it were me, I'd make the first one focus on Superman and have the other heroes in the next trailers, but it aint me, so who knows.

Gunn is a super geek like us, and loves a good shirt rip, so I won't be surprised if that's teased at the end.
a close up of two hands reaching for the shirt, we see a tie, it flutters down toward the ground, then the screen fades to black, logo appears. 2025.

So yeah, I fully expect this trailer to hit most of us right in the feels.

That Fandango poll is consistently (and notoriously) off every year.

Their 2023 list didn't even include Barbie or Oppenheimer but it had The Super Mario Bros. Movie (the second biggest film that year) in 10th place and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (one of that year's biggest flops) in 5th.

At that time, many brought up how laughably off that was for Mario. The anticipation was already that it would win 2023 which it damn-near did.

Absolute non-story for a slow news-cycle. Superman will be fine.

So i just saw the trailer for '28 Years Later' which will be coming out on June next yr. Supe's one should be coming out very soon I expect...
