We don’t have whole cities in America dressing like the 1960s whilst others don’t. This is either gonna bleed into other projects, causing problems for other creatives who nah not want to follow that aesthetic, or Gunn’s world will be inconsistent, make no sense

I also hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the people coming down on this movie aren’t just Snyder bros. My own sister thinks the suit looks bad, albeit Corenswet is cute

Gunn’s costume designed lowkey kinda failed, so he’s gonna have to rely on the actors themselves

We also don't have aliens who fly and shoot lasers from their eyes in America.

Okay, and that doesn’t mean all internal logic needs to go out the window? Things still have to make sense because suspension of disbelief can only be stretched so far before people start to check out

I really hate when people infantilize comic book stuff. “Oh, it’s a comic book movie, the creators don’t have to care about the stuff that literally every other creator cares about in other medium)

Comics have loooong evolved past being *just* about funny books with men in tights. Comics have been used to tell some of the most emotional, philosophically challenging stories we’ve seen in media

So yes, if Gunn wants people to believe in this world things have to make sense

"I hate when people infantile comic books" he says about Gunn giving his movie a stylistic choice that we often see in comic books in which other do not have to follow. Bruh, no one is saying they shouldn't care about internal rules and logic. People are saying one city having its own culture isn't some Earth shattering logic defying issue.

Imagine if the MCU had a random city where people used flying cars and dressed like Jorge Jetson. Oh yeah, they’re doing that for Fantastic Four, and it’s not in the MCU main universe

I wonder why 🤔

Wow, it's almost like the MCU is now like 50 projects in, and has already established a world in which doing that in their normal NYC wouldn't work. Crazy how they were able to do that just fine in both Black Panther movies.

Apple and oranges.

People are now *****ing about a fictional city being stylized? Even though we have past precedent for this kind of thing (Batman 89).

DC in particular is not Marvel. Marvel is the "real world" where their stories take place in New York, and cities like LA. DC has fictional cities like Gotham and Metropolis, and they have always had their own esthetics that reflect the hero and their tone. What Gunn is doing is very much in line with that.

Do we want a generic "modern world" for DC? I don't see much point in that.

Which probably starts with the alien flying around, wearing a cape.

The idea that a film can't be incredibly emotional or philosophically challenging because of a mash up of eras in a city, is infantilizing comic books and audiences.

The problems with this, how is this going to translate to other projects when Gunn claimed he wants to prioritize creative freedom ?? He’s set the aesthetic for the entire universe

What if Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof don’t want to put their characters in 70s jean jackets ? Does Gunn Metropolis exist in this sort of “Land Before Time” pocket reality?
I would think this is something they would have discussed with Gunn before they got the job? Like any creatives working on these kinds of projects, they are probably willing to compromise.

If I'm not mistaken, Gunn said during his appearance on Rosenbaum's podcast that he wanted to approach the DC Universe on film as if it were Tolkien's world, where each region has its own specificities. Exactly like what we see in the comics.
I don't believe there's any problem, in film, in bringing together a Metropolis with some retro-futuristic influences, alongside a potentially industrial-gothic Gotham, and so on. The DC universe is not any different as any other fantasy universe in the end, there can be a wide variety of environments.

Also, in my opinion, this may be the key to making this umpteenth attempt at an extended universe really interesting, cinematographically speaking (sorry if that sounds snobbish).
Instead of having a dozen or so films with a bland style so that it fits everywhere, each film is free to have its own style, to introduce its own flavor, and it's then up to the film serving as a cross-over to make the concessions so that all the parts co-exist.

I just don’t see people like Lindelof or Mundy wanting to “compromise”, or sign onto these projects with minimal oversight

Otherwise, Gunn would’ve just hired some film school yes man instead of two of some of the most accomplished showrunners in Hollywood

It’s certainly going to be tonally jarring. Especially with this movie set to have geopolitical subjects like the Middle East, war profiteering, and weaponization of heroes

All the while Metropolis looks like a cartoon. It may not jive with people but we’ll see

Jarring for who? Do you think people lack imagination?

What matters is the storytelling. The writing, acting, directing. I'd also point out that the most beloved superhero trilogy has a Gotham that's a mash up of London, Chicago, and Pittsburgh. And it's obvious. :funny:

The Suicide Squad gets praised because it had a dude dressed in red and blue tights discussing American war crimes in the same movie as a giant goofy talking shark and Godzilla sized purple starfish walking around.

The audience will be fine. People have imaginations.

Dune Part 2: 0/5

I found it too jarring that Paul was able to keep that much bounce and volume in his hair, while living in the desert. :weeping:
