The Daily Planet Vol. 2: Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

Using the John Williams theme is fine. There's nothing cheap about it when it evokes the version of the character that still resonates. But I'd have liked it if they had pulled off what The Batman did: with four simple notes in the teaser, you already had something people were humming. After Elfman and Zimmer's Bat-scores, that would've felt impossible, yet it wasn't. If Gunn had done sth similar, the Williams theme would be a nice side complement rather than the only thing marketing has offered so far. I'm hoping John Murphy pulls a John Ottman and manages to come up with several cool new themes that play around the Williams one.

Yeah I have no problem with reusing the Williams theme. Just because it’s a new continuity doesn’t mean they shouldn’t revisit it if they can do something new and fun with it. The James Bond and Mission Impossible series reuse the classic themes even when they are new continuities. A brand new theme could have been cool too, but I like what they are doing with their spin on the JW theme here. It still sounds fresh and different enough, rather than just aping the theme like Bryan Singer’s people did.

I dont think Zimmer's score for the Nolan Trilogy is all that memorable and neither that or Elfman's themes are impossible to replace. Williams score is a completely different animal...for literally everything he does.

I wish they'd use it even more. The way they've updated it is brilliant and always gives me goosebumps with new footage I see. I'm tired of people thinking anything new is going to be better than that theme. It just isn't. It's time to accept that the Williams theme is lightning in a bottle for anything Superman related. It just screams Superman, not chris' Superman, just Superman. I've heard other themes I like and have no dramas with but none of them feel like THE definitive Superman theme like the Williams theme. They feel like pale imitations.
Only other Superman theme that comes close to me is The Animated Series version.

I love the Elfman theme, but it doesn’t feel as timeless imo. I have trouble seeing it fit seamlessly with newer iterations of Batman (or Battinson). It would need more tweaking than Williams’ theme.

For me that Elfman theme is on par with what Williams did for Superman.
I love the Elfman theme (saw him perform it live) but it only works for that Batman. (Keaton) Williams scores are just something different. They define films in ways that I can't even describe. They are almost a character until themselves along with defining a mood.

And they are timeless.

I am not saying its the only Superman theme cause it isn't. But it is the only one where you could play it for people of many ages and it is recognizable. Like Star Wars or Jaws or Indy...its just part of the iconic nature of the characters.

What Shirley Walker did with the Elfman theme, that’s the blueprint for the ideal Batman theme

Its iconic, but they didn't even keep it when Joel Schumacher took over the series (even though those movies are supposed to technically be in the same universe).

I mean the Shumacher theme is great, too.

It's looks like showtimes are starting to pop up. A few of the theaters around me have listings.

Are they actually selling tickets or just displaying showtimes? Because they’re not suppose to go on sale til Wednesday. :hmm:

Off topic...I just saw Ballerina and if that got good reviews Superman should crush. Just a yawner of film. Even Keanu couldn't save it.

Just showtimes for right now. Although I've heard that tickets are supposed to go on sale sometime next week, like June 11th or 12th.

EDIT: I just realized the 11th is on a Wednesday, so that tracks.

By that token all comic book movies are cheap and easy nostalgia, as they're things we loved as children and held on to into adulthood. It's just having a sook for the sake of having a sook. The williams theme is timeless and works for all incarnations if you put it in front of them.

Nah, it was cheap money grabbing nostalgia to me. I get it. Tis’ like he click on default theme and carried on. Matt Reeves/Snyder/ animated Superman etc have managed to do their own epic themes, but Old Film Supes is still bound by these check marks. I totally understand, but it just underwhelms me that they didn’t even try by the looks of it. Having said that! I’m glad the rest of the flick looks fresh good.

I mean, when you do something great, like using a NIRVANA song, and it blends so effortlessly, it felt like that song was specifically made for Batman. Something that was most likely an out of box idea, but when it works, it goddamn works. Copy and paste epic known scored here, it sure works but not original any more, but it works. Eh.

I've said it before-- I either like or love every Batman theme, but the only one that matches Williams' Superman in terms of truly being part of the public consciousness-- in which every single person, fan or not, can recognise and hum it-- is "Na na na na na na na BATMAN!!"

The costume looks good on Fortnite. If only his live-action costume was just as form-fitting.

I've come to appreciate that some of Corenswet's charm as Superman comes from the slight looseness of the suit. It makes him look a bit more innocent and unassuming, and the muscles are there, just not action figure obvious. It's a little touch that works.

Regarding the whole Bradley Cooper rumor… I keep hearing all these YouTubers claim that little audio clip we hear of Jor-El (presumably) speaking Kryptonian sounds a lot like Bradley Cooper. Am I just missing something or are these people just hearing what they want to hear? It might very well be him speaking and doing some sort of accent, but it doesn’t sound like Bradley Cooper at all to me. Anyone else feel this way? Again, it might be Bradley Cooper, but right now I have no idea who that is.
