ah, such fond memories of batman 89's promotional blitz. that movie had perhaps the greatest ad campaign ever. but it just doesn't seem like it works with nolan's batman series. they're not event type pictures.
good strategy though, i love the dominos commercial

the thing that went wrong with batman-the ONLY thing-was its marketed was horrendous. Countless errors by W.B. killed the film. At the time, I looked at its 72 million 5 day as horrible; but now that I think about it-its theatrical trailers were terrible. There were zero tv spots, and 1 tie in with Verizon. Batman Begins was a very low profile film; so now that I think of it, its 72 million was fantastic for how poorly it was marketed. I shutter to think at how big it coulda been had it been properly marketed.

errors
-lack of tie ins
-huge lack of tv spots
-horrible trailers
-fantastic internation trailer while poor domestic
-just general lack of advertising

so how should THE DARK KNIGHT be marketed? Should be a low profile ala PIRATES 2 or BATMAN BEGINS, or a high profile ala SUPERMAN RETURNS, KING KONG, or STAR WARS EPISODE 3?

Pirates 2 was a Low Profile Film? I couldn't turn on a TV screen without getting a "PIRATES!" TV Ad.

5. Theatrical Posters

I would mimic the matrix reloaded’s spectacular poster campaign, only with batman characters.

It would need 10 good tv spots
-3 weeks from release date: 1 on every channel ever 2 hours

-COKE COLA
-LAYS

You dont need dozens ala superman or kong, those 5 are perfect. Enough but not too many.

DOMINOS
I chose this because they have tons of commercials, and do not really give away toys yet, so it could be a goo dexpirament for w.b. Also is the fact that they deliver, meaning people are more likely to use them to go out to a BURGER KING.

TV SPOT(this a throwback to 1989-this also includes a fictional deal with the film)
*This would air regulary with other tv spots
-shot of a dominos restaurant at night
-inside, a guy answer the phone. “Dominos Pizza”.
-Shot of Wayne Manor at night-inside it- Alfred on the phone. The words “STATELY WAYNE MANOR” flash on the bottom of screen
-Alfred talks into phone. “Yes I need to place an order for pick up”.
-Shot of Batman putting on his cowl in the cave
-Alfred continues- “Yes Id like the new Dominos Dark Knight deal. 2 large pizzas and a 2 liter bottle of coke for 12.99”
-Batman walks towards the Batmobile-
-Alfred continues – “Yes this is a very particular black car sir”.
-The batmobile zooms out of the cave
-Alfred-“It will be very hard to miss”
-The batmobile races through gotham city.
-shots of pizzas with voiceover guy talking about the deal. “Its such a good offer, nobody can pass this up. Not even Batman”.
-The batmobile pulls away form the screen.
-DOMINOS-GET THE DOOR. ITS DOMINOS

-Last week before release-Every single pizza has a DARK KNIGHT poster tapped the box with coupons on the bottom.

CADILLAC
-A tv spot shows a new model fo a cadilac, and says “as seen in the dark knight:”.

KELLOGGS

Batman Cereal-just a box with the batlogo, little rice krispie treat’s with bat shaped marshmallows. Tv spot for it shows two little kids trying to get some from the joker.

COKE COLA/LAYS

Every
-can
-battle wrapper

features a BATMAN vs. THE JOKER THEME with BATMAN in a fighting stance on one side, and Joker Laughing on the other side

The first trailer MUST be with Spider-man 3 period. Anything less, IMO, is a huge let down and a mistake.

I hate the Domino's commercial idea - it reminds me too much of the Schumacher On Star TV ads. Also - really, do you think Sir Michael Caine would be doing Pizza commercials?

The Cadillac thing is fine -no problem with that.

I don't think this is the sort of film, however, needs Coke/Pepsi tie ins, or Kellogs. Let it run on Commercials and Theater Trailers.

so how should THE DARK KNIGHT be marketed? Should be a low profile ala PIRATES 2 or BATMAN BEGINS, or a high profile ala SUPERMAN RETURNS, KING KONG, or STAR WARS EPISODE 3?

W.B. had the same situation3 years ago with MATRIX RELOADED. The Matrix wasn't a high profile movie at all; just a april action film. It was far better and bigger then expected, and built up a huge fanbase, so big that everybody know the sequel would be absolutly enormous. So, they could market it like the original, like its no big deal, or they could explode market and make it a huge event. Doesn't that sound another situation they now face with the Btaman franchise? of course. They chose to make it an EVENT, and it turned to be the biggest event in its summer-and at the time, history. In the end, it made an astounding 134 million 4 days, beating the previous record of 125 million set by the behomoth spider-man. In the end, the Matrix would wind up with 280 million total, 120 million behind spider-man (though worlwide, matrixz lost by only 50 million). Matrix Reloaded was generally reguarded as a dissappointment, mainly because W.B. exploded the hype so incredibly high that the expectations simply couldn't be met. Or maye it just wasn't that great of a movie. Point is, that shows that expanding on the hype makes bigger box office numbers, which is the only thing marketing really effects.

so to me, its clear that w.b. needs to go as high profile as possible.

But it seems w.b. may have already made a big mistake. Their supposably planning on releasing the film in June, which is the worst month of summer for a film to build "hype". The Dark knight needs either May 15th or May 22nd (Memorial day). May 15th is best due to that is the date biggest movie of summer usually opens; the 3rd weekend in may. It also just happened to be the exact same date MATRIX RELOADED opened on.

Here is how I would start the campaign.

What are you talking about? There was something like 14 different tv spots for Begins. I saw them constantly.

This is true - that reminds me of a quote that one of the posters here (Shaggy I believe) had from Michael Caine about Jaws 4 - something to the extent of "I have never see [Jaws 4], and from everything I heard it was horrible. I have, however, seen the house that it built, and it is quite lovely."

Yeah but the word of mouth was crazy with this film. I remember I was at a business conference and these are wealthy people educating people on the transition of business and he brought up the film batman begins as an example of how word of mouth advertising is the most powerful.

Personally I would ...y'know...start with making trailers from the movie, not the other way around.

Now that they did the teaser where no one knew it was a Batman movie, I think the smart thing to do now is to promote it as much as possible as a Batman movie, especially since it won´t have Batman on the title. And start right away with at least a glimpse of Joker, since he will be a major catch for the movie.

I agree.

What I think about usual WB marketing strategy?

Well, honestly it sucks.

They make theatrical trailers without good quality and good editing. Also, they don't put in their trailers enough action or great moments.

They should change everything and if they don't do this, then they will loose their audience.

I think they should follow Sony's strategy. Why? Well, just look at Spidey movies, which were promoted very well.

So what should WB really do to get more people interested in TDK (even if people liked BB)?

1. Change the quality of their trailers (put there much more action and unique shots).
2. Change the quantity of TV-spots.
3. Change total shedule of trailers' release dates.

So what should the main shedule be like?

JULY
*Teaser-trailer with Harry Potter 5 (1:30-1:40; show more action and dramatic scenes ala Spidey 3 first trailer)

UPDATE: I read that interview with Caine, in which he said that filming of TDK is going to start in March. So I changed release date of Teaser-trailer, because I doubt they will be able to finish making of trailer by May.

I personally liike the subtle approach to WB marketing for 'Batman Begins' (relatively speaking) and let word of mouth be the biggest marketing for it.

It was such a contrast than the overkill for the marketing of the other BAtman movies that it was almost refreashing.

True, they should up the advertisment just a little for TDK but not go overboard like in years past or like the usual hollywood maketing machine for a Summer movie.

Massive marketing does not neccesarily means more money, see 'Superman Returns'.

without such a huge campaign, superman wouldnt of toped 175 million.

WB should a bit limit so huge promotion, but they also have to change the quality of trailers, if they want TDk to make high numbers in box office.

If it was just A better movie it would've toped 250 million.

Bad word of mouth killed that movie's box office perfomance.

Personally I liked it, for the most part (saw it 4 times) but for the general movie goer it was to slow, long and disjointed.

This is true - that reminds me of a quote that one of the posters here (Shaggy I believe) had from Michael Caine about Jaws 4 - something to the extent of "I have never see [Jaws 4], and from everything I heard it was horrible. I have, however, seen the house that it built, and it is quite lovely."

i love that quote. i think it's great that he's like, 'i did it for the money. so?' :woot: i have a lot of respect for michael caine.

well ill give u a congrats for putting in alot of time and effort. but i have to say NO to ur ideas

Its just another reason why Michael Caine is better than everyone else...excluding Ronny Shade.

i could type a 10 page long response buit isnt worth it.

muche asier to just say your completely wrong. wom was good; what wa sbad was its release date. could been batman begins n wouldnt of made a PENNY more.

I just hope Warner does not make the mistake of turning up at comic con with only Cillian Murphy and David Goyer sans exclusive footage and a taped message with a pissed-off looking Bale. A please don't make end the teaser trailer with a still shot.
