The respective follow ups to the two biggest CBM's of the modern era. To you, which was the better film overall, and which film claim closest to living up to (or surpassing) the quality of its predecessor?

My vote goes for Age of Ultron. I liked Age of Ultron. Thought Dark Knight Rises was bad.

The Dark Knight Rises.

The Dark Knight Rises. I liked AoU, but it was a bore compared to its predecessor.

TDKR. It has it's flaws but AOU has way more, and is a bigger step down from it's predecessor than TDKR is.

AoU by far. I disagree that it's a bigger step down from its predecessor than TDKR, because I think it's superior. Not as well-made or sharp, but the stuff it does right is much, much better than TA imo. I think TA left such a strong impression on people that there's no way AoU could match up, but as someone who has seen TA maybe a million times and knows it like the back of my hand, AoU is better in many ways. All of its problems boil down to Whedon indulging himself too much, imo. He's a much better writer and idea man than a director.

TDKR was just not on the same level as TDK. Not even close. I personally feel that Nolan wanted to just cap off his trilogy with a satisfying end and give the fans a good ending rather than push the envelope like he did with TDK.

Funny how the critical scores reflect the opposite of that. AOU's critical score is way off from the first Avengers movie's one. Whereas TDKR's is not too far off TDK's.

In the epic voice of Honest Trailers guy:
"From Avengers vs TDK, we now move into the sequel thread."

Age of Ultron is so much fun I could not bother with picking the flaws, or what I don't like about it.
At the moment I saw The Dark Knight Rises more, the only bit about it that stands like a sore thumb is when John Blake tells Bruce; "Dude, your smile was fake, like mine, you are Batman".

I really really love TDKR, and saw it more times than I saw the other one, so based on that, I like TDKR more.
I'll wait a few months and watch AoU again before I vote in the poll.

Yeah, thinking about it, I'd like to make some amendments.

I do think TDKR is a better movie overall. Nolan is simply an excellent filmmaker and even his worst movie, TDKR (says a lot!), is a very well-made movie overall. The TDKT is pure quality while the Avengers movies get by on spectacle and heart.

So I have two answers. Which is the better movie overall? The Dark Knight Rises. What movie came close to living up (or surpassed) its predecessor? Age of Ultron.

Yeah, thinking about it, TDKR is a superior movie overall. The construction, acting, dialogue, themes, and villain are all better, which are reflected in the critical score.

AoU is not as well-made as TA. The pacing is not as tight, the story is not as clean, the characters are kind of all over the place, the editing is off, etc and that's also reflected in the critical score. I still liked AoU more.

I enjoyed the themes, characters and plot of TDKR a bit more than I did Age of Ultron. However, AoU was an improvement over TA and is tied with IM3 as my favorite MCU movie.

Going with The Dark Knight Rises on this one. Not only do I think it's a better film, but it was a much more satifying experience and great finale to The Dark Knight Trilogy. Avengers: Age of Ultron felt too much of the same, only this time with shoddy editing with obvious missing story elements that could have made it truly great.

I'm surprised by this poll result so far. I'll check again in a few days.

TDKR. Loved AoU but I don't think it's even close......

Rises. All around much better film making and it didn't feel inconsequential.

After seeing both, I don't even comprehend how one could vote for Rises. I personally dislike TDK but understand why people like it. The virtues of Rises escape me. I don't like Nolan much and frankly expect very little from his films and still was disappointed in him for Rises.

Dark Knight Rises all the way. I had big hopes for AOU and it was big 'ol disappointment. Not even one of Marvel's better efforts.

I feel the same for Snyder and people who like Man Of Steel. Just don't don't get what they see in it but hey at least that got the rotten critic rating it deserved.

The Dark Knight Rises is better on every level.

TDKR. It has glaring flaws, but I can't deny its emotional impact.

The Black Soldier Lifts vs Vingadores: Hours of Spadetron

Hmm.....

Age of Ultron. Honestly, it was far more ambitious in its efforts than TDKR, and more successful in pursuing them, too. TDKR just benefits from being "serious art" or having the veneer thereof. Nobody is going to be given an Oscar nomination for things like "successfully replacing the standard cinematic scene structure with the scene structure of a multi-issue comic book story."

Ehhh how his AOU more ambitious? It's more of the same stuff from first Avengers, except it wasn't as good as Avengers so it wasn't more successful. Loki was way better than Ultron too.
