DC Films The DC Studios News and Discussion Thread

Yeah, it's likely Sgt. Rock.

Sgt Rock, Clayface or The Batman: Part II.

So this is DCU? Not Elseworlds, right?

Idk, I’m not as excited by Clayface as others seem to be—especially in a film w/o Batman.

Idk...no one has said Batman isn't in it.

Could be interesting to see Batman from a criminal's perspective, for once.

If I recall correctly, Hellboy: The Crooked Man came out too. That didn’t look great from the trailers.
It was actually surprisingly entertaining. Dunno if they'll get the chance to do a sequel but I would definitely welcome one.

All these recent announcements are completely baffling to me.

Deathstroke solo movie
Bane solo movie
Sgt. Rock
Clayface (now officially dated for Sept 11, 2026)

As if The Authority, Waller and Swamp Thing weren't obscure choices for the first phase of the DCU already.

Meanwhile, no forward momentum on projects like The Brave and the Bold, Teen Titans or Paradise Lost (not to mention a new Wonder Woman film). Oh and Gunn just revealed that Reeves hasn't even submitted a first draft of The Batman Part II. Considering that Clayface (a DCU film, mind you) is now slated to release less than a month before The Batman Part II it's pretty obvious that Batman will get delayed into 2027.

To me it seems like Gunn just wants to release a bunch of oddball projects that he is personally interested in before the DCU collapses and WB cleans house again. Like seriously, does this film slate make any sense for a new DC cinematic universe? I know it's a cliche thing to say but who are these movies made for? A Clayface movie before we've even seen the DCU Batman?

I personally find this approach waaaaaay more interesting than just making “path to Justice League” movies about all the characters everyone expects. The latter would just feel like more uninspired box ticking like we got last time. Helps that I don’t care about getting a Justice League movie anyway. I just want good DC movies again. All these characters are great and could make for some really interesting films imo.

Most of these movies are gonna bomb or best case scenario make a very modest profit if the budgets are kept low.

They’re not all gonna have massive budgets. I feel like that’s obvious. Nothing wrong with solid mid-size films that make tidy little profits. We need to get out of the mindset that all CBM’s should be massive $200mil+ tentpole blockbusters imo.

This universe is DOA if instead of establishing the big players they just throw out all these obscure and disparate characters.

From someone who isn't excited about the DCU: this is the best part. The more obscure DC characters are the best DC characters - they will probably never, ever get a chance to shine like Gunn is giving them.

They’re leading with Superman. Batman and Wonder Woman are not required outta the gate. Supergirl and the Green Lanterns aren’t A-list but they’re hardly “obscure.” They’re literally spotlighting characters on every level. Just because they’re not forming some sort of simplistic narrative to set up a group tentpole does not make them “disparate.”

Yeah it does not excite me one bit.

DCEU gave us our first WW film, our first Aquaman film, our first SS film, our Flash film....yes most of them lacked but they were characters that excited me and now they seem like "they've had their chance and if you arent a Bat or Super....we'll go with the oddball"

Paradise Lost was announced when this verse was "announced" and its still "in development".....with no other WW projects coming out anytime soon.

At least give me a Black Canary/Birds of Prey proper film. Or a Vixen film/series. Or a Catwoman film

Batman has a whole other universe film so of course he isnt required right outta the gate.

I guess I'm happy for the people who want to see these weirder and lesser known characters sooner rather than later but the general audience is not going to show up for them and the DCU will be just as dead and aimless in 5 years as the DCEU was by 2023.

As always, they’ll show up if the movies look good. Y’all get way too caught up in “branding” imo. Most of the GA doesn’t give a s*** about “the DC brand” and never has. They just go so see what looks good. Clayface will likely be a horror-thriller with a modest budget and plenty of those do very well with the GA all the time. No reason to think it wouldn’t as long as it looks cool.

EDIT: yep, THR now reporting a $40mil budget for Clayface, just as I thought. Should have no problem being a success as long as it looks decent.

Shouldn't have bothered announcing the DCU at all then. Just go back to making stand-alone films that have nothing to do with each other.

The comics universe is still a universe and the majority of its stories are still standalones. And if they’re going to have some crossover of characters, places, etc with these movies, which we already know they are, what else should they have called it? You seem really stuck in your idea of what the DC Universe should look like tbh (which sounds too much like the MCU and DCEU to me personally). This is still a universe, it’s still a slate of films, of course they’re gonna announce it.

I’d hardly consider Supergirl or the Lanterns as “the oddballs.” Nothing wrong with giving the underserved B-list (SHOULD be A-list) characters their chance in the sun.

Quick, make this person the head of the New DC Universe (NDCU)!! They have the answers!!!

Audiences show up for quality. If the movies are great, the audiences will show up.

I think people are quick to forget that the MCU started off with mostly B-list characters. Iron Man, Thor, etc, weren't exactly household names.

Supergirl immediately following Superman is the only aspect I do like about this DCU plan. As for Lanterns, I'd be excited about a movie but it being a series really limits what they can do (also why it takes place on Earth). There are many characters that are appropriate for a series, Green Lantern isn't one of them.

Supergirl is more classified as a Super to me. Lanterns Ill give you.

But I still see a lot of oddballs when there are characters that should be getting way more love a lot sooner than some of these. I dont want to start with oddballs at the beginning of a verse. I want to see Catwoman, Black Canary, Zatanna, Hawks, Vixen, and of course WW sooner than 10 years down the line. Esp when I aint got no other shows, animated series featuring them.

MCU didnt have a choice. And they were "A-list" Marvel characters in the comics as being part of that little known group known as Avengers. Clayface, Creatures Commando are not the same as Captain America, Iron Man, or Thor.

This. The Marvel equivalent of what Gunn is doing now would have been Marvel Studios starting out their cinematic Universe with Morbius, Madame Web and Kraven.
