DC Films The DC Studios News and Discussion Thread

Never mind that Superman can be more than one thing, but are people seriously just not watching Superman and Lois? Beyond being a great show, if you want your happy Superman- without being too much of a boy scout- there it is.
Hoechlin is great. But I would think that a large slice of the movie-going public have never watched Superman and Lois, and their only exposure to live-action Superman over the last 10 years has been Henry Cavill.

Not just the movie going public but even fandom itself. I've seen alot of people even here admit that they've never seen it.

To most people, their main exposure to Superman will always be the movies.

Red Son is fine but I'm not clamoring for an adaptation--certainly not one starring Henry Cavill.

Let's just get a good Superman flick in before we start hypothesizing Elseworlds takes.

It's a travesty that WB makes its fans tune into CW to see live action adaptations of their top-tier characters. The last DC TV series I watched was Lois & Clark.

I hear you all and your love of Lois and Superman, and admittedly I’ve never watched an episode, but it just looks so… CW.

And Hoechlin, I’m sorry, is just not an appealing Superman to me visually. He has this scowl in most of the marketing that just makes me laugh. I’m sure his acting in the actual show is different. But if people aren’t checking it out, blame the marketing making it look like a cheap soap opera.

Scowl? This guy:

By far, the best parts of the series are Clark and Lois’s interactions as a couple. Kudos are deserved. Unfortunately, the rest is mostly typical CW soap opera.

That’s all you had to say.

People who actively choose to miss out on a peak Superman portrayal due to some network bias or some preoccupation with production values (the best television shows in history are rarely the most expensive-looking ones in my experience)…are the types of fans I’ll just never understand. But to each their own! I’ll just be grateful I finally got a fantastic live-action portrayal of my all-time favorite fictional character that actually lines up with the one I’ve been reading my whole life. Only had to wait 30+ years to get it, and it’s a shame it’s only lasting 4 seasons, but it was worth it, and hopefully the movies can now pick up the baton where it leaves off since they’ve seen a better example of how a “modern” Superman actually works. Tyler Hoechlin is simply the best live-action Superman there’s ever been imo. Not the most famous or most iconic since his audience is smaller, but the best, nonetheless. He raised the bar as far as I’m concerned, and now I’m just hoping David can meet it, and maybe even raise it further. :supes:

I second all of this, as Superman is likewise my all time favorite fictional character and Hoechlin is my definitive portrayal as well.

My only deviation is that I have waited over 45 years for this portrayal. I love Reeve’s portrayal as much as the next guy, but Superman and Lois encompasses everything I love about the character, including his compassion, his wisdom, his altruism and indeed his overt goodness. We get to see that played out on the home front as well by focus on the family dynamics, taking the foundations set forth in Tomasi‘s Rebirth run and expanding upon them.

As to production values, throwing lots of money at effects does not ensure a better product. Let’s face it, most people (obviously not everyone, but most) agree that:

were ultimately better depictions than this:

There is no substitute for knowing the character and getting characterization right, no amount of money spent on special effects can cure not getting the character’s basic foundations right.

Superman and Lois has a few flaws. (The Lang family is insufferable.) But as a whole, in my view, (and I’ve been reading Superman comics for decades) it is the definitive depiction of Superman put to film. I cannot sing its praises enough on that front. And it is far and away my favorite depiction of Lois Lane as well.
Kyle was an absolute waste of space lol. This show had a great Clark (my favourite Clark - Reeves still unbeatable as Supes), a great Lois and easily the best partnership between/combo of the two.

The show somehow made me ok with Supes having kids, they definitely grew on me. I also loved having John Henry and Nat involved.

I had trouble watching SUPERMAN AND LOIS at first.....I just could not stand the whiney angsty kids. Things got better by the end of season one.
Believe me, I absolutely hated the idea of seeing this, but as the show went on I was happy to have seen a Superman family work on screen. By the end the boys were part of the show’s charm for me.

The dialogue on that show can be rough. It is very CW.

The performances are reasonably good.

Hoechilin got a chance for him to redeem himself on S+L, after being the punchline of jokes on Supergirl.

Since this show is doomed to end. They've got nothing to lose in taking chances. Killing characters off. They could end with Superman flying into the sun like All Star Superman. It's a unique opportunity.

I always chuckle when people whined about angsty kids on tv. It's like people haven't dealt with teens before ;)

(I am a teacher I thought the kids were pretty on point)

“Angsty kids” may be realistic. But that doesn’t make them entertaining to watch. :ninja:

Well you know they were written to be entertaining to the audience of the CW network. So that's why.

The contrast to that would probably be Tom Holland's Peter Parker. He is a teen character written in a way where he is beloved to all audiences, all demographics. Even when he's dealing with 'angst'.

Nope. Can't say I agree with that at all. Whether Superman 1978, Man of Steel, or Superman and Lois, I enjoy them all, with Man of Steel being my favorite Superman film, though I think Hoechlin might have the best portrayal of both Clark and Superman, with that show nailing a lot about Clark and his family dynamic. But I'll leave it at that since I know many a-person here detest Man of Steel with a passion. But I love it and make no apologies for it no more than I would apologize for liking Superman 1978 or Superman and Lois.

I like Superman & Lois but it's definitely not my favorite. It has it's flaws. Hoechlin is genuinely a great Superman though.

To be clear, there are some elements of MoS that I like quite a bit. But there are many elements of it that I think miss the mark of what makes the character who he is. But I by no means fault anyone who likes the film and that was not my intention.
To me, MoS is a different take on the characters. And it doesn’t line up enormously well with how he and other characters are routinely portrayed in the comics. That’s all right, some people may like that better. But I personally am invested in how Superman is portrayed in the comics and the deviations didn’t land very well with me. But I accept that they might land better with someone else.
