The Descent

I didn't care for it. None of the characters were developed, the monsters were like weird looking monkeys, there really wasn't a plot...it just wasn't that good in my eyes...at least not for all the hype. The atmosphere was the only thing it had going for it.

ok a lot of you are talking about the twp endings. can someone please tell me in spoiler tags how is the other ending?

thank you.

Same here. I didn't know there was an alternative ending. I loved the film because it was so raw and intense!

whats funny is that 3 days after i saw this mvie i saw on tv that some people find a new big cave somewhere. and they filmed everything. ohhh come one that was funny :)

wouldnt it be funny that there are 5 friends on the world who are doing this in free time. now imagine if one night before they go some guy brings a dvd. and then they watch this movie. now i dont care who you are. you would be scared.

In the American version, Sarah gets out of the caves and into the car. She drives off and then turns to see the ghost of Juno sitting next to her and then the film ends.

In the European version, after Sarah sees the ghost of Juno it goes back to her in the cave opening her eyes - meaning she was just dreaming of getting out. We then see her sitting on the floor and her daughter is with her (albeit a ghost aswell). The camera zooms out from the caves and we can hear the sound of the monsters obviously on their way to get Sarah, implying she will never get out.

I have to disagree with you, compared to a lot of recent slasher flicks, I actually wanted the characters to live. And I thought the monsters were scary as hell. And I guess they are kinda monkeys, since they are an evolved human.

i watched the europen version. amercian version kinda sucks. and i really mean it. it is obviously just cut. but cut very bad.

Those b****es deserved what they got for going in the damn cave to begin with. :cmad:

Really? The only ones I felt were developed were Juno and the one who's kid died. Juno deserved to die and the other one well...she seemed like she would be happier dead than alive.

And I thought the monsters were scary as hell. And I guess they are kinda monkeys, since they are an evolved human.

Is that what they were?

i was never really interested in seeing this it sounded to much like the cave which really really sucked

Well I believed the decent was made before the Cave,it was popular in europe I think.
I thought it was a very well done movie, and even better since it had a all female cast. Don't see that happen very often, and do well neither.
Its one of the horror genere that was very well thought out,and scared the crap out of me when I first saw it. These foreign horror films don't cut short the blood(high tension/wolf creek).
Far as the cave, was a bad pitch black ripoff imo..It was okay, but not near as good as decent.

great film. juno and sarah were the best. it sucked what happened to juno but she kind of deserved it
not for accidently killing the friend of sarah's though

my mom didn't like it though. the ending ( unrated original) totally killed it for her.

Both Dog Soldiers and the Descent were great movies IMO. ^Didnt you think Juno deserved to die just for leaving Beth instead of helping her?

We all knew
Beth wasn't going to make it. With all the chaos and carnage going on I can't blame Juno for leaving. Now I agree that Juno should have finished Beth off instead of leaving her there to be eaten alive though.

I agree with you about Juno. True she was in shock and in her defence...
she had just finished killing something that tried to rip her to peices so why the hell did Beth walk up on her like that without saying something. Juno should have finished her off though

She was also having an affair which didn't help matters.:oldrazz:

Juno was a straight ***** who done got what she deserved.

I think this film has one of the deepest messages in film history, actually. I think the whole point flew over everyone's heads.... and that's very sad.

In a nutshell, here's The Descent:

The reason why we don't learn what the creatures are, is because they were revealed in the beginning scenes of the movie. They are Sarah's PERSONAL DEMONS. After going through such a traumatic thing, like her husband and daughter getting killed right in front of her, she becomes crazy at the very beginning... as shown in the hospital scene. The lights going out throughout the hall represent the demons coming to get her, and right before they do, she gets away in time.
As they descend into the cave later on, her personal demons come back to haunt her in the form of the creatures. So really, the title ''The Descent'' has NOTHING to do with six girls ''descending down into a cave''.... it actually means that the movie is about Sarah's Descent into Madness. As the girls get killed off one by one, Sarah is the only one that ends up kicking ass in the end, and she is the STRONGEST one out of all of them. The reason why she is the strongest, is because she is the only one that went through a traumatic experience... therefore, she can fight the creatures easier. She ends up going into ''all-out-crazy'' mode, as seen in the climax.
Now, the ending doesn't suck as much as you all think. There was ALOT of thought put into it, and it wasn't some cliche pointless ending like you assume.... You have to seriously examine it, and I know that's a difficult task for most people.
The European ending is better, because it shows that Sarah is STILL in the cave, and that she will never get out. In reality, this is actually a HAPPY ENDING, because she has officially overcome her personal demons, and she ends up seeing her daughter down there with her. If one were observant, they would see that the birthday cake shown throughout the movie with her daughter has only five candles on it, indicating that she was five when she died. However, in the end, there are SIX candles, which shows that this event is a year later, and that her daughter actually LIVED to see her sixth birthday down there in the cave.... in SARAH'S MIND. Sarah never sees visions of her husband because he was a lying cheating bastard and got what he deserved. Her daughter, however, was innocent.

This whole debate about ''Oh, it's stupid how Sarah gets out of the cave and drives the car, and then sees Juno's ghost, and then she wakes up in the cave again, and it blows!!11! LOLZ'' is actually the smartest thing about the movie, because it shows that escaping the cave isn't REALLY what will bring happiness to Sarah. Happiness to Sarah is being with her daughter, no matter where she is.... And now that she has faced her personal demons (the creatures), has overcome them, and was stronger than anyone else... she can die peacefully with the fact that her daughter is down there with her, which means that it's a happy ending.

Now, one could argue that the creatures don't actually exist, and that Sarah killed everyone, since she is the FIRST one to see a creature. However, I hate that idea. The creatures are supposed to represent her personal demons, and the cave is supposed to represent her descent into madness. It wouldn't make sense for Sarah to be a psychotic killer....so TRUST ME.... the creatures were real. They were just a METAPHOR for something else. If you want to get literal... then they were ''Bat People.''

So yeah, this movie was seriously misunderstood, and it's a damn shame that almost nobody recognizes it's brilliance. Everybody keeps saying, ''It's a cool creature movie, and there's blood everywhere, LOL!!''.... and it saddens me.

Best horror movie ever. By far.

I was enthralled until the Gollums started attacking. Sméagols=yawn

it could aslo be that the creatures were never there. i mean it could also be just a dream. i dont know. you have great points. and this is also why they dont explain the creatures. because the movie is not about them.
